Salzburg (German pronunciation: [ˈzaltsbʊɐ̯k];Bavarian: Såizburg; literally: "Salt Fortress") is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg.
Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) is internationally renowned for its baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city has three universities and a large population of students. Tourists also frequent the city to tour the city's historic center and the scenic Alpine surroundings.
Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the mid‑20th century, the city was the setting for the musical play and film The Sound of Music.
Traces of human settlements have been found in the area, dating to the Neolithic Age. The first settlements in Salzburg continuous with the present were apparently by the Celts around the 5th century BC.
Around 15 BC the separate settlements were merged into one city by the Roman Empire. At this time, the city was called "Juvavum" and was awarded the status of a Roman municipium in 45 AD. Juvavum developed into an important town of the Roman province of Noricum. After the collapse of the Norican frontier, Juvavum declined so sharply that by the late 7th century it nearly became a ruin.
Austrian cuisine is a style of cuisine native to Austria and composed of influences from throughout the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Regional influences from Italy, Hungary, Bohemia, Germany and the Balkans have had an effect on Austrian cooking, and in turn this fusion of styles was influential throughout the Empire.
Austrian cuisine is most often associated with Viennese cuisine, but there are significant regional variations.
Breakfast is of the "continental" type, usually consisting of bread rolls with either jam or cold meats and cheese, accompanied by coffee, tea or juice. The midday meal was traditionally the main meal of the day, but in modern times as Austrians work longer hours further from home this is no longer the case. The main meal is now often taken in the evening.
A mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack of a slice of bread topped with cheese or ham is referred to as a Jause, and a more substantial version akin to a British "Ploughman's Lunch" is called a Brettljause after the wooden board on which it is traditionally served.

Sound of... is an annual BBC poll of music critics and industry figures to find the most promising new music talent. It was first conducted by the BBC News website in 2003, and is now widely covered by the corporation's online, radio and TV outlets, as well as other media. A 15-strong longlist is published each December, with a ranked shortlist and annual winner announced the following January.
More than 130 critics, editors and broadcasters took part in the Sound of 2009 survey, which was won by electro-pop singer Little Boots. For the first time, a longlist of 15 acts from the 2009 poll was published by the BBC on 5 December 2008. The other five acts on the longlist were The Big Pink, Frankmusik, Master Shortie, Mumford & Sons and The Temper Trap.
The longlist for the Sound of 2010 poll was revealed on 7 December 2009. The acts nominated were Daisy Dares You, Delphic, Devlin, The Drums, Everything Everything, Giggs, Gold Panda, Ellie Goulding, Hurts, Joy Orbison, Marina and the Diamonds, Owl City, Rox, Stornoway and Two Door Cinema Club. On 8 January 2010, Ellie Goulding was announced as the winner. She has since gone to reach No. 1 with her debut album Lights.
The Sound of Music is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children. Many songs from the musical have become standards, such as "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", "Do-Re-Mi", and the title song "The Sound of Music".
The original Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened on November 16, 1959. It won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, out of nine nominations. The original London production opened at the Palace Theatre on May 18, 1961. The show has enjoyed numerous productions and revivals since then. It was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards. The Sound of Music was the last musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein; Oscar Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere.

Few days ago Cities in 4K visited Salzburg, the fourth-largest city in Austria. It is located on the river Salzach and is a beautiful city, especially during winter holidays when covered with snow, which wasn´t the case this year, unfortunately. But you can find a lot of stock footage about Salzburg during winter. The old part or Altstadt of Salzburg is known for its baroque architecture. And in this part of the city is the birth house of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart located. There are many other interesting and historical meaningful buildings in this city which has to be explored. Some of the buildings and places you can find in the video are: Residenzplatz, Salzburg Kathedrale, Kapunzinerberg, Aussicht vom Kapunzinerkloster, Mönchsberg, Alter Markt, Mirabell Schloss und Gärten, Hohensal...

http://tourvideos.com/ Salzburg, Austria, a perfect day includes the castle, walking the narrow lanes, enjoying great views from Kapuzinerberg and Monchsberg hills, have a beer and sausage and visit Mirabell Gardens. The center of town is given over to pedestrians, so you can have a good look around by simply walking. Wear comfortable shoes! There is certainly a lot of interesting history you may absorb here, with visits to museums, castles and palaces, but it is the ambience of the town itself that is most attractive -- the lanes, courtyards, shops, gardens and little squares are the most rewarding part of the Salzburg experience.

Travel video about destination Salzburg in Austria. The magnificent buildings within Mozart's famous city of Salzburg are not the only reason why it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria. The Prince Archbishop, Wolf Dietrich, ordered that Salzburg Cathedral be built according to Italian Early Baroque design. It was constructed between 1614 and 1628 on the site of a previous Romanic building. At one time the Getreidegasse served as the main road of the old city and on January 27th 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in house number seven, 119 metres above the town is one of Middle Europe's most well preserved castles, Hohensalzburg, which covers an area of around 30,000 square metres. Filled with old world charm, European grandeur and an infatuation with classical music, Salzburg feels special the moment you arrive. Visiting is like wandering into a fairy-tale - the locals are charming, the architecture simply beautiful, and it’s the prodigal birthplace of two of Austria’s most treasured cultural icons: The Sound of Music and Mozart. As many have come to realise, however, there are more stories to be found in Salzburg than just the Von Trapp family’s. Here’s how to go about exploring the finest this storybook city has to offer in just 48 hours.

Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart lies among the snow-covered Alps, hills and the lake of Salzkammergut. There Hohensalzburg palace stands quietly over the small town. The coaches, starting from the Dome, can take the tourist everywhere in the old town. Near the city we can refresh ourselves on the beaches of Attersee. In St. Wolfgang, take a seat in the famous ‘White Horse Inn’. The beautiful main square of Mondsee is not far either, nor is Bad Ischl, the former imperial spa resort, where one can still hear Lehár’s music after ordering an ‘Ischler’. Near Gmunden stands the ‘Schloss Ort’ that became famous thanks to a TV series. There is geranium on every balcony. The sunny hillsides, the lakes and the green pine forests tempt us to return.
