It is ironic that at a time when the Labour Party seems involved in a process of politicide against the working class, when strikes are only slightly above an all time low, when the BNP is on the rise and when the organized Left seems on the brink of extinction, it seems strange that many of my 'comrades' believe that "the Left is on the march" and that the revolution is approaching fast. Fortunately this wilful ignorance is not universal. In response to this problem and the Left's abandonment of the working-class, formerly its key constituency, a group of activists have established the Independent Working Class Association, an organisation which demands "working class rule for working class areas" and has recently gone national. Although I would be the last person to encourage anyone to have any illusions about the potential for change to be achieved through representative democracy (the IWCA has stood in, and in some cases won, council elections and is intending to participate in the GLA elections next year) the fact that they have the balls to think differently deserves credit.
