This is an act of revolution. In the theatre that bears his name, Shakespeare is upstaged, he’s a mansplaining plagiarist — and he’s played by a woman, Charity Wakefield. In fact, the entire cast, as well as the author, director and designer, are female, and the story is that of Emilia Bassano, often believed to be Shakespeare’s mysterious Dark Lady. She steps...★★★★☆

Nature Notes
There are now two dramatic flowers in bloom from the genus Impatiens. They are called this because they do not wait for their seeds to fall, but shoot them in a vigorous explosion out of their seedpods. The lightest of touches, or even a gust of wind, will make them do this. One of them is orange balsam, which has brilliant red and orange flowers, and a hood, a lip and a spur at the back. It gleams brightly on river banks and, in America, where it comes from, it is called jewelweed. The other is the grandiose Himalayan balsam, from the mountains of that name. It is about 8ft tall with similar, but much larger, pink flowers, inside which bumblebees can temporarily disappear. It often grows in large colonies alongside rivers and streams. It can hurl its seeds for several yards and they float off on the water to colonise a bank farther down. derwent may
