While last Saturday (February 14th) saw many people celebrate their love of consumerism, in the Mexico border town of Ciudad Juárez it saw campaigners trying to raise the profile of the serial murders and disappearances of young girls which have plagued the town and others. The protest was part of the V-Day campaign working to end violence against women and was supported by celebrities Jane Fonda and Sally Field (whoever she is). Protesters chanted "Ni Una Mas" - Not One More and the event culminated in a performance of the Vagina Monologues which forms the centre of the V-Day travelling campaign. The works author, Eve Ensler came on stage at the end of the performance to declare Juárez to be the "pilot project" for "vagina warriors and vagina-friendly men". Asserting that "we are about making sure Juárez becomes the new capital of non-violence towards women around the world." She encouraged people to "think about Juárez as the victory place." The town has seen over a 100 murders of women since 1993, with bodies often turning up horribly mutilated, there have also been many disappearances and the police have been at best complacent in dealing with the problem and at worst complicit in the crimes. This being the case we can only hope that this action marks the beginning of a major change.
