The ICC, the world’s only permanent international court designed to try war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, marks the 20th anniversary of its founding treaty on July 17, 2018. Richard Dicker, International Justice director for Human Rights Watch, played a role in the court’s founding. He speaks with Amy Braunschweiger about the court’s challenges, its future, and why the world needs international justice.

Good news! The Chinese government permitted Liu Xia, the widow of dissident Liu Xiaobo, to board a plane to Germany on the morning of July 10, 2018, nearly a year to the day since her husband’s death. The German government negotiated Liu Xia’s release, whose health significantly deteriorated during nearly eight years of house arrest. It is a tremendous relief that #LiuXia has been able to leave China for freedom abroad! Child protection authorities in Paris are using flawed age assessment procedures for unaccompanied migrant children, excluding many from care they need and are entitled to. Hundreds of these young migrants find themselves homeless, often condemned to sleep on the streets of Paris. These children have suffered through incredibly difficult and dangerous journeys, only to be deprived of the protection and care they need. In the Somali region of #Ethiopia, it seems like everyone knows someone who was locked up in the dreaded Jail Ogaden, but no one wants to speak about the horrors there. The thousands who have been held there are terrified of revealing the horrors that they faced. But now Ethiopia has a new prime minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, who has promised reforms and vowed to embrace increased respect for human rights. So far, he has released hundreds of political prisoners but has steered clear of tackling the torture epidemic in Ethiopia’s prisons. There are 41 million people living in the #US who weren’t born here. Donald Trump thinks you should be scared of them. Artist @mollycrabapple and comedian Samantha Bee tell a different story.
