Johan Cruyff is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history. Throughout his playing career, he was synonymous with Total Football, a style of play in which every player could play in any position on the pitch. Today, his philosophy lives on in teams across Europe, from Barcelona to Bayern Munich and players from Lionel Messi to Cesc Fabregas.

My Turn tells the story of Cruyff's life starting at Ajax, where he won eight national titles and three European Cups before moving to Barcelona where he won La Liga in his first season, in 1973, and was named European Footballer of the Year. He won the Ballon d'Or three times, and led the Dutch national team to the final of the 1974 World Cup, famously losing to West Germany, and receiving the Golden Ball as the player of the tournament.

While on the field Cruyff was in total control, off the field his life was more turbulent with a kidnapping attempt and bankruptcy. After retiring in 1984, he became a hugely successful manager of Ajax and then Barcelona when he won the Champions league with a young Pep Guardiola in his team. In 1999 Cruyff was voted European Player of the Century, and came second behind Pelé in the World Player of the Century poll.

In March 2016 Cruyff died after a short battle with lung cancer bringing world football to a standstill in an outpouring of emotions. A brilliant teacher and analyst of the game he loved,
My Turn is Johan Cruyff's legacy.

No doubt about Cruyff's footballing genius as a player and coach but this book did not reveal too much about the man. He obviously had a very high opinion of himself, was stubborn and argumentative. I can't tell if he was a happy man or not, or if he had much fun in his life. He always seemed to be at odds with people and organisations. I'll remember him as one of the greatest players ever who, more than any other, influenced how football is played.

Not enough about the playing career and too much about the politics and infighting at Ajax and Barcelona. A deep thinking man who has the games best interests at heart.

An excellent biography but includes clear description of the revolution in soccer that started with Cruff and taken on with ingenuity by Pep at Barcelona and Manchester City.

I really enjoyed this book. A great story, about a great man and football icon, written in a compelling and captivating manner. The book flows and tells the story of the life of Dutch football legend, Johan Cruyff. Cruyff talks a lot about his philosophy and his family and how this all shaped him. he also talks openly about his enemies and leaves no prisoners, another aspect I really appreciated about the story. Whether you love the sport of football or not this is a must read for anyone wanting to learn from someone successful.

Lucky to have see him in two games he writes about in the book.He was mesmerizing.Really the kind of player you would look at even when he didn't have the ball.
The book helps explain this.I love the confidence he communicates.you can hear him saying look I am trying to show you this.

It is hard to understand the negative reviews on here. If you want funny stories, check out autobiographies by Jimmy Bullard or Ray Parlour. If you want histories, the likes of David Rosenblatt satisfy that need. But this is a compelling book, and encapsulating the thoughts and philosophies of one of the greatest thinkers in modern football. As a player and a manager, Cruyff was a true innovator, breaking new ground across four decades. And this book brilliantly reflects the thinking of this unique talent. An absolutely must read for any student of football.

This was a truly wonderful book to read .... firstly, as a soccer fan, you appreciate the how & the why Cruyff was so driven to achieving what he set out to do from a very young age. Secondly, the birth of total football and how that brought Ajax out fo the doldrums they found themselves in the mid 60s to winning 3 European Cup in a row. One always felt the 1978 WC was poorer for Cruyff not taking part but as a family man, you understand the trepidation that he faced leading up to the tournament - without giving too much away in spoilers. Stubborn, hard headed, yet in other ways, very naive, Cruyff also shows the the rest of us that he was also capable of being kind, understanding via his foundation in helping those less fortunate than him. This book isn't all about football, tactics but of man management, threachery that we face in life and how one gets ahead .... by doing the right thing; and without fear of the consequences
