Cliff Jones: It's A Wonderful Life Hardcover – 31 Oct. 2016

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

Cliff Jones was a key part of Tottenham's famous and muchloved Double winning side of 1961. Tremendously quick, a great crosser, and a brilliant header of the ball, Cliff was considered to be the best left winger in the world in his pomp.

This is his story. How he rose through the ranks to play for his home town team, Swansea Town, as a 17 year old, his move to Tottenham Hotspur and development under the tutelage of Bill Nicholson, the famous 1960/61 Double, European success and his near move to Juventus.

Through it all he proudly represented Wales and played in the 1958 World Cup where an injury ravaged side lost to Brasil and a young Pele in the Quarter Finals.

Charming, engaging and always smiling, Cliff is still a wellrecognised figure at White Hart Lane where he works as an ambassador for the club.

About the Author

Cliff Jones was born in Swansea and signed for his hometown club while working at the local docks. A proud Welshman he played 59 times for his country and in 1958 he played in the World Cup against Pele. He moved to Tottenham for a British record fee of £35,000 and became a fully-fledged star - famously being part of the team that won the League and FA Cup double in 1960/61. He later lifted the European Cup Winner Cup and played over 400 times for the North London side.

I first saw Cliff play in Spurs 5 West Ham 1 at White Hart Lane in the late 60's.
Soon after I used to go to WHL on a Saturday to watch reserve games - yes, in the "old days" reserve matches were always at the stadium of the home team !!
Great days too - you could go anywhere in the stadium - up on the "shelf" - behind both goals - under the main stand - you could do laps of the stadium during half-time to keep warm !!
Cliff's book captures all those great days, and gives a fascinating insight into life at Tottenham - and his other clubs.
Couldn't put the book down !!
My only gripe is that Cliff didn't make mention of the fact that me and my mate Paul used to serve Mrs Jones in the Co-Op ;-)
......and when Cliff and his son Steve thrashed Paul and myself at tennis in Connaught Gardens - Cliff always was a WINNER !!

Great read for old Spurs fans, to understand how the double was done. Cliff is a true gent, amazing to still see him at the Lane in one of the lounges. Full credit to him to speak so openly about his alcoholism and where he is now. Recommended.

As a Spurs fan from 1966 when Cliff Jones was still playing, albeit towards the end of his career at the club, I found this book a joy to read. A thoroughly nice man, honest & engaging, i particularly enjoyed his memories of the glory glory double winning years. Tough times for him later on with alcohol addiction but he got through that & is still going strong at 83 years old now. A genuine football legend & it was a pleasure to be able to share his life story.

A brilliant and honestly written autobiography. I witnessed the great man in action wearing the Spurs shirt in the 1960s,. When he received the ball 50,000 plus fans fell silent as Cliff accelerated at speed towards the opposition penalty area, a sight to behold. I have had the pleasure of meeting Cliff, you will never find a nicer man, a man happy to talk Spurs and his life at the club. A great read by a great man.

Cliff Jones is one of British football’s all-time greats. I am so glad he played for Tottenham and that I had the opportunities to see him play on so many occasions.

In my view autobiography books are never as good as a biography and my view has not changed after reading this publication. The book fails to capture the magic of Cliff Jones and of the outstanding Spurs side of the 1960’s and I felt rather felt a sense of underwhelming after reading the book.

A book that captures a bygone era when foreign footballers were the Scots, Welsh and Irish players. A time when local youngsters had more opportunities via schoolboy football to play the game at a professional level and considered themselves lucky to be paid for doing something they loved. A must read for any Swans or Spurs fans about their beloved teams.
