AB de Villiers - The Autobiography Hardcover – 8 Sept. 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
'AB has become the most valuable cricketer on the planet' Adam Gilchrist
AB de Villiers is one of the finest batsmen ever to play cricket, and yet his achievement extends beyond his outrageous armoury of drives, pulls, paddles, scoops and flicks.
Whether he is delighting home crowds at the Wanderers or Newlands or setting new records in Bengaluru or Sydney, he plays the game in a whole-hearted manner that projects a positive image of his country around the world, and also makes millions of South Africans feel good about themselves.
This is AB's story, in his own words. The story of the youngest of three talented, sports-mad brothers growing up in Warmbaths, of a boy who excelled at tennis, rugby and cricket, of a youngster who made his international debut at the age of twenty and was then selected in every single test played by South Africa for the next eleven seasons, of a batsman who has started to redefine the art, being ranked among the world's very best in test, ODI and T20.
Through all the pyrotechnics and consistency, AB has remained a true sportsman - quick to deflect praise, swift to praise opponents, eager to work hard, to embrace the team's next challenge and to relish what he still regards as the huge privilege of representing his country.
This is the story of a modern sporting phenomenon.

AB De Villiers aka ABD is a batsman extremely gifted & according to me an outlier in its truest sense. Be it the wide array of shots, he has in his arsenal & his impeccable technique & big hitting ABD has carved himself a special place in our hearts. On a similar ABD scores yet again on a different field this time as an Author. This Autobiography of ABD or Abbas stands out yet again as outlier due to the following factors: 1) Its authenticity 2) Style of Narration & 3) Depth of its offerings. This book is an out & out bonanza for any cricket fan. As one among the ubiquitous cricket fan in India Where “Cricket is a religion” I was thoroughly impressed. As a spectator be it victory or defeat we get to see only the limited part: be it the action on the battlefield, the post match ceremony, victory celebrations or defeat mournings etc but Cricket at an International level is much more than that and having read this book it becomes clear that we have got to see only the tip of the iceberg. Both before & after the match there are lots of things happening around, Pre-match preparations, Post-match conferences,Pep talks, dressing room atmosphere(especially in tense worldcup situations) this book gives us a sneak-peek into all of those. Having been given the “C******” tag its never easy for SA team because they are a promising team who are always devoid of luck in crunch situations & end up getting knocked out. I was able to relate to that very well since I have personally seen lots of such situations in my life. In fact the pain of the whole team is brought out by ABD in this book. The Narration gives is more of a dissection of ABD’s life at a granular level. The chronological portrayal of events makes it very clear. The ambiguous questions regarding ABD the Superstar who has excelled in more than one team sport at national level is also answered. His respect for stalwarts such as Jacques Kallis, Graeme smith is sky high & apart from that the respect that he way for his fellow players & game as such is also very well brought out. There are lot of takeaways for us in this book. This is in the form of lots of pep talks, activities that ABD has used to encourage his team & the pick of lot for me is the proteafire song & green book activity. The photographs given are also such a treat. It also brings out how much ABD values his family & work-life balance aspects as well. Last but not least the surprise element in this book was how ABD talk about work getting monotonous. As a Cricket fan one would never think “Playing cricket” might get monotonous & ironically it does get monotonous (+ the overseas trips & flight journeys). The strategies that he has given to overcome that applies universally to all professions as well. Well as they say “The Grass always appears to be greener on the other side” 😛. This is AB’s story is his own words & you will definitely enjoy as much as his whirlwind knocks & swashbuckling centuries. ABD & Pan Macmillan have got it backon & hit the bulls eye.
