SEQUEL TO THE BESTSELLING PEP CONFIDENTIAL

For three extraordinary seasons at Bayern Munich, Marti Perarnau was given total access around the German super club - to its players, its backroom staff, its board members and, above all, to its manager, Pep Guardiola. In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed account of Guardiola's first full season at Bayern, Pep Confidential, Perarnau now lifts the lid on the Catalan's whole tenure in Bavaria.

Pep Guardiola: The Evolution takes the reader on a journey through three action packed seasons as Bayern smashed domestic records yet struggled to emulate that dominance in Europe, analysing Guardiola's management style through key moments on and off the field. Perarnau reveals how Guardiola improved as a manager at Bayern despite failing to land the ultimate prize in European football, examines his decision to leave Germany to take up the challenge at Manchester City and how his managerial style will continue to evolve in the Premier League.

This is more than the story of three seasons with one of the biggest clubs in the game. It is a portrait and analysis of a manager and the footballing philosophies that have beguiled the world.

Jamie Carragher Review

Product description

Review

'Perarnau's fascinating follow-up to Pep Confidential, his acclaimed inside portrait of Guardiola's first season at Bayern … What [the book] does brilliantly is dismantle the British view of Guardiola, which is still of an unbending priest of tiki-taka. Perarnau talks to him every day … [and shows] football's most successful manager is a Swiss Army Knife coach' --Sunday Times

'Perarnau's access to Guardiola and the players allows him to analyse why Bayern didn't win the Champions League under Guardiola and to conclude that he will need time in Manchester. A hugely informative read' --

A great book, giving a summary of everything guardiola does over his three years at Bayern. The book also goes on to predict how Guardiola will set about his project at Manchester City and some of the obstacles he may face along the way.

The author explains in great detail how Guardola deals with certain events/ situations over the three years and the thinking behind certain tactical ideas. For example intergrating players into his strategic plans. A problem he encountered with Thomas Muller one the best attacking players in the world. The author explains the problem with evidence from training, matches, Guardiola himself and his assistants. He then describes the actions taken by the coaching team to recitify the situation. Lastly this is followed up by an in game situation of how all of the hard work to integrate Muller into the system, or the 'team ecosystem' as the author puts paid off in games. This is just one of countless examples the author uses from his time observing at Bayern.

I would recommend reading the first book before this book as this is more of a summary of a summary of his 3 years and Guardiola as a coach, whereas the first books is more in depth in the day to day running of the first team however it isn't essential to do so.

This is a great book not just for coaches but for anyone interested in football or any sport for that matter. The author combines his opinion brilliantly with that of Guardiola and other high class coaches from all sports and the access given is sometimes beyond belief. No wonder Guardiola's wife was worried too much information was being shared!

… this book is outstanding. There were many, many “football books” that popped up when searching for one to capture my interest when reading on holiday. I chose this one because a) the reviews were v good and b) it promised an insight you don’t normally get into professional football and coaching - and it really didn’t disappoint.

Pep is an intriguing character and arguably one of the best coaches ever. Reading how he approaches the game, analyses his opponents and sets up his teams is fascinating from start to finish.

Perarnau describes Pep as possessing 'a contradictory blend of the rational and the emotional and this presents challenges of its own. At times he [Guardiola] can appear cold and austere, at others overly emotional and he does not always succeed in balancing the two.' This, as it turns out, is not a bad review of the book, and it's author.

It's a superb read for detail. Given the access of the author, it stands to reason. And it's clear that Perarnau understands football, and talks about it in an intelligent and simplistic way. This is the authors skill. The book offers an incredible insight into all sorts of aspects of the sport, as well as behind the curtain of Guardiola's personal and home life too. This follows in the theme of the first book Perarnau wrote on Guardiola in this respect.

But the book is often derailed by Perarnau's sycophantic passages, which, in my mind, undermine the credibility of the book. Often Perarnau will dip too heavily into praising Guardiola, who the author confesses is only human, but offers little reminder of that throughout. I love Guardiola as much as the next man (maybe slightly more), but hearing about his titanic will, forensic analytics skills and his indomitable personality starts to slowly get under my skin. Even if the author cut down on these gushing moments by half, there'd be too many. It's possible it is an attempt to boost the word count however. Who knows. I could go on, but I feel it would turn it into a bigger issue with the book than it has to be and I don't want to put anybody off.

I rarely read any form of biographies but as Pep was had just announced that he will be taking over as the new manchester city manager in July 2016, I thought it would interesting to see what my team would be getting.

From reading the book I found Pep the most intense manager to get things right for his team left no pages unturned to make sure everything is right for each game and when things don't go right super analyses where he went wrong.

All in all a fascinating read and not a book glorifying his achievements.

It is a great footballer's fan book. It is a honest write up of Bayern's first year under Guardiola. Guardiola loves football and the major issue will be the player will have to buy into his ideas and put their energies. He is a perfectionist who eats football. He is the best man in football who was born into football. Great read and lots of talking points

This book can't escape accusations of being mere hagiography, but that won't bother my fellow coaches and football fans, "Pep Confidential" doesn't have the tabloid appeal its title suggests, and maybe there never will be a true "Confidential" written by or about Guardiola. To be honest, unless he takes to shooting innocents from a water tower or defecating in hotel corridors, there doesn't seem to be a market for a grubby tell-all on Guardiola, family man and (allegedly) the world's best football coach. So, with all that said, the writing is adequate. Peramau makes sure not to stray too far from adoration, and even if half a note of negativity creeps in, the reader gets the impression it's been vetted, cleared by Pep, double cleared by Bayern Munich and given all its shots before it's allowed out of quarantine.

Pep Confidential is a must-read catechism for a sizeable football audience. The bits that describe training are purely for coaching tragics, but then I repeat myself.

Broad Reflection
The book takes the reader through Pep’s coaching experiences at Bayern Munich, what he had to overcome after coaching Barcelona and his sabbatical. The book goes over his innovation towards positional soccer by learning not only from the past but from many other sports, even chess. The tactics and philosophy he implemented from the lessons learned is also covered. Pep’s character is revealed by the author, many examples of his innovation, adaptability, ability to teach and critically think, humility, and many of his personality traits are given. The author explains the arduous process of how Pep deals with adversity and how he builds a team culture by staying true to his convictions but not being afraid to change. Finally, a new process at Manchester City, his new job, has to be created. The author explains why Pep will continue to succeed.
Strengths
Great insight into the way Pep thinks and constructs his teams is on point. The detailed explanations of Pep’s tactics and strategic planning command attention. The book makes a strong case why they work. The evolution process on how he came up with such revolutionary ideas are comprehensive; they capture the reader.
Limitations
The book repeats itself in several concepts such as his ability to adapt to any situation, personality traits, and his competitiveness. Perhaps this is done on purpose to cement the authors ideas. However, while the author gives plenty of praise there is not enough criticism.
What Was Learned?
Perhaps, one of the greatest lessons I learned is summarized in this quote “There is no such thing as a good or a bad coach. There are only coaches with courage and those without.” (Perarnau, 2016, p. 98). Implementing innovative ideas has been difficult for me and for those who I coach. For so long they played a very direct style of soccer, correcting that can be a difficult task. While I have had plenty of success as a coach, oftentimes I feel those who I coach are not ready to play in a different way. I learned that innovation is painful and suffering is what makes the team stronger. The progress of execution of such ideas are possible. Furthermore, I learned suffering sounds scary but it only refers to the continuing realization of goals, through progress and change. If progress if happening everything will be okay. For this reason, patience, perseverance and taking bold risks are necessary traits for this endeavor. Another concept I learned is that strategic planning is essential for coaching, this concept opened my eyes and brought me to a different level of coaching.
