Brian Clarke: The Quick and the Dead
When Brian Clarke (b. Oldham, Lancashire, 1953) looks around, he sees a world of lines. He has drawn constantly ever since he was a child and he regards everything he sees as a potential subject. His stained glass windows have brought him worldwide fame and commissions for them have come from places as far apart as Saudi Arabia and New York. This is the first exhibition in the Netherlands ever to feature his paintings, which combine abstract compositions with figurative emblems in the shape of Spitfires, Porsches, fleurs-de-lis or crosses. For the Gemeentemuseum’s Projects Gallery, where exhibitors are asked to produce artworks that respond to the architectural space, Clarke is this summer creating an offbeat installation composed of eight large-scale paintings, three of which are impressi...

Champagne for my real friends
Real pain for my sham friends
Punk blessed by the Pope
Northern to Southern smoke
Toast of the glitterati
No stranger to a fabulous party
Pray to railway terminals
Can churches cure criminals?
Take in Manhattan skyscrapers
King of the stained-glass makers
Chorus
Here is art of mystical dimensions
Here is craft of divine interventions
Blaze in messianic glory
Transform resurrection story
Fleur de lys for Lady Linda
A choir of angels for her kinder
Proves that nobody's Beatle-proof
High time to raise the Gothic roof
Stained-glass gives kinetic suspense
Between extremities - no defence
We succumb to the gesamkunstwerk
From the banker to the office clerk
Robert in Mayfair, groovy playpen
Out with Brian; partners in mayhem
In and out of architecture
Late at night, sublime conjecture
Surveying Spitfires, primroses
Saturated system, de profundis
Time lag zero, Office for the Dead
I can smell incense in my head
I've got friends who aren't famous
I've got friends who aren't dead
