Kurdish and Persian are both classified as Western Iranian languages within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It should be noted that the Kurdish spoken in this video is Kurmanji, as the Kurdish language is divided into three dialect groups known as Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji), Central Kurdish (Sorani), and Southern Kurdish (Palewani). A separate group of non-Kurdish Northwestern Iranian languages, the Zaza–Gorani languages, are also spoken by several million Kurds. The Persian language (Farsi) is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and some other parts of the Middle East, South and Central Asia, in what is sometimes called, Greater Iran. The Persians and Kurds have had a long historical connection with one another and so have the languages. Despite many common words between the two languages, the grammatical relations are a bit different.
With ISIS all over the news, it's easy to forget that there are many more groups in Iraq fighting for control. One of these groups of people are the Kurds and they're starting to become a force to be reckoned with. Who are they and what do they want in Iraq?

Since the start of the Syrian civil war, Kurdish people in the North have carved out an autonomous region of their own — Rojava — by fighting the Islamic State. Their militias, which form the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have emerged as the most effective fighters against ISIS and won them a close partnership with the US.
The ruling Kurdish Party, the PYD, has set up a democratic federation made of local governments. Their constitution claims to accept people of all ethnicities and religions and treat them as equals. One of its central tenets is equality of men and women. In fact, the all-female Women’s Protection Unit (YPJ) militia fights alongside the SDF, and they’re known to be especially good soldiers.
But the more territory the Kurds take from ISIS, the more worried Turkey gets.
Turkey has been at war with another closely linked Kurdish group, the PKK, for decades. In 2018, Turkey invaded the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin, putting the country in direct conflict with the Kurds of Rojava.

Despite sustained international pressure, the Kurdish regional government in Iraq held the its first-ever vote on independence. Celebrations took place across the official Kurdish region - away from the central Iraqi government. 32 million Kurdish people occupy a region across Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran - but do not have their own country. 6 million of them live Iraq. But controversy arose when it was announced that the vote wouldn’t just include the semi-autonomous Kurdish region but also the oil-rich disputed areas- claimed by both the federal and regional government.
VICE News was on the ground in Erbil and spoke to Kurds as they cast their vote with the whole world watching.

Six months after the Kurdish region of northern Iraq voted for independence in a controversial referendum, the region is no closer to establishing its own country.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) initiated the referendum, in which more than 90 percent voted "yes" to secession. Without any signs of change, some in the regional government are blaming the situation on Baghdad and foreign governments.
"The people of Kurdistan are being punished," says Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the Kurdistan Regional Government Representative to the United States.
She says the KRG did not expect the "unsophisticated" reaction to the referendum by the US and Europe. "With every statement they made against the referendum they were emboldening our neighbours and Baghdad to think the Kurds were alone and that they could punish us."
According to Rahman, Baghdad continues to cut off the region's budget and has left them to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) and accommodate 1.8 million displaced people and Syrian refugees.
While she says there's been some improvement in the relationship with Baghdad in recent weeks, Rahman also argues that the budget issue and Iraq's failure to establish a federal and pluralistic democracy is what led to the KRG's pursuit for independence.
There are currently hundreds of cases of alleged corruption within the KRG, according to its Commission of Integrity.
When asked whether corruption and nepotism, particularly among family members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party President Masoud Barzani, are to blame for the lack of progress in the independence movement, Rahman says "people know who they're voting for". She says "many people are proud of their record. Many people look up to them for leadership."

The CBS Evening News is the flagship evening television news program of CBS News, the news division of the CBS television network in the United States. The program has been broadcast since 1948 under the original title CBS Television News, eventually adopting its current title in 1963. Since June 6, 2011, the weekday editions of the program have been anchored by Scott Pelley. Since 2012, Jim Axelrod has served as anchor of the Saturday edition, while Jeff Glor anchors the Sunday edition. Kurds
The Kurds (Kurdish: کورد Kurd) are an ethnic group in the Middle East, mostly inhabiting a contiguous area spanning adjacent parts of eastern and southeastern Turkey (Northern Kurdistan), western Iran (Eastern or Iranian Kurdistan), northern Iraq (Southern or Iraqi Kurdistan), and northern Syria (Western Kurdistan or Rojava). The Kurds have ethnically diverse origins. They are culturally and linguistically closely related to the Iranian peoples and, as a result, are often themselves classified as an Iranian people.Kurdish nationalists claim that the Kurds are descended from the Hurrians and the Medes, (the latter being another Iranian people) and the claimed Median descent is reflected in the words of the Kurdish national anthem: "we are the children of the Medes and Kai Khosrow". The Kurdish languages form a subgroup of the Northwestern Iranian languages.
The Kurds are estimated to number, worldwide, around 30–32 million, possibly as high as 37 million, with the majority living in West Asia; however there are significant Kurdish diaspora communities in the cities of western Turkey, in particular Istanbul. A recent Kurdish diaspora has also developed in Western countries, primarily in Germany. The Kurds are the majority population in the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan and in the autonomous region of Rojava, and are a significant minority group in the neighboring countries Turkey and Iran, where Kurdish nationalist movements continue to pursue greater autonomy and cultural rights.

Six months after the Kurdish region of northern Iraq voted for independence in a controversial referendum, the region is no closer to establishing its own country. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) initiated the referendum, in which more than 90 percent voted "yes" to secession. Without any signs of change, some in the regional government are blaming the situation on Baghdad and foreign governments. "The people of Kurdistan are being punished," says Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the Kurdistan Regional Government Representative to the United States. She says the KRG did not expect the "unsophisticated" reaction to the referendum by the US and Europe. "With every statement they made against the referendum they were emboldening our neighbours and Baghdad to think the Kurds were alone and that they could punish us." According to Rahman, Baghdad continues to cut off the region's budget and has left them to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) and accommodate 1.8 million displaced people and Syrian refugees. While she says there's been some improvement in the relationship with Baghdad in recent weeks, Rahman also argues that the budget issue and Iraq's failure to establish a federal and pluralistic democracy is what led to the KRG's pursuit for independence. There are currently hundreds of cases of alleged corruption within the KRG, according to its Commission of Integrity. When asked whether corruption and nepotism, particularly among family members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party President Masoud Barzani, are to blame for the lack of progress in the independence movement, Rahman says "people know who they're voting for". She says "many people are proud of their record. Many people look up to them for leadership." Since the start of the Syrian civil war, Kurdish people in the North have carved out an autonomous region of their own — Rojava — by fighting the Islamic State. Their militias, which form the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have emerged as the most effective fighters against ISIS and won them a close partnership with the US.
The ruling Kurdish Party, the PYD, has set up a democratic federation made of local governments. Their constitution claims to accept people of all ethnicities and religions and treat them as equals. One of its central tenets is equality of men and women. In fact, the all-female Women’s Protection Unit (YPJ) militia fights alongside the SDF, and they’re known to be especially good soldiers.
But the more territory the Kurds take from ISIS, the more worried Turkey gets.
Turkey has been at war with another closely linked Kurdish group, the PKK, for decades. In 2018, Turkey invaded the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin, putting the country in direct conflict with the Kurds of Rojava.

Celebrations took place across the official Kurdish region - away from the central Iraqi government. 32 million Kurdish people occupy a region across Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran - but do not have their own country. 6 million of them live Iraq. But controversy arose when it was announced that the vote wouldn’t just include the semi-autonomous Kurdish region but also the oil-rich disputed areas- claimed by both the federal and regional government.
VICE News was on the ground in Erbil and spoke to Kurds as they cast their vote with the whole world watching.

Six months after the Kurdish region of northern Iraq voted for independence in a controversial referendum, the region is no closer to establishing its own country.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) initiated the referendum, in which more than 90 percent voted "yes" to secession. Without any signs of change, some in the regional government are blaming the situation on Baghdad and foreign governments.
"The people of Kurdistan are being punished," says Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the Kurdistan Regional Government Representative to the United States.
She says the KRG did not expect the "unsophisticated" reaction to the referendum by the US and Europe. "With every statement they made against the referendum they were emboldening our neighbours and Baghdad to think the Kurds were alone and that they could punish us."
According to Rahman, Baghdad continues to cut off the region's budget and has left them to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) and accommodate 1.8 million displaced people and Syrian refugees.
While she says there's been some improvement in the relationship with Baghdad in recent weeks, Rahman also argues that the budget issue and Iraq's failure to establish a federal and pluralistic democracy is what led to the KRG's pursuit for independence.
There are currently hundreds of cases of alleged corruption within the KRG, according to its Commission of Integrity.
When asked whether corruption and nepotism, particularly among family members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party President Masoud Barzani, are to blame for the lack of progress in the independence movement, Rahman says "people know who they're voting for". She says "many people are proud of their record. Many people look up to them for leadership."

In the media in Europe, we often see statements taken from people who claim the Turkish military is leading a war against the Kurds. We want to make clear today that this war is not against the Kurdish people, but against the terror organisations PKK and PYD, YPG and IS. That's why we're here today, we see it as our duty to share that with the people - I hope everything remains peaceful and that we can all go home after our demonstration."
SOT, Protester (German): "Operation 'Olive Branch' is a positive development that will safeguard the EU from a renewed wave of refugees. Contrary to claims of those who wish to denounce and pillory Turkey, this operation is not directed against civilians, innocent people. It is to monitor the PYD's (Democratic Union Party - Kurdish democratic party in Syria) abuse of civilians in Afrin as human shields. For this reason we're convinced that Turkish troops will proceed with maximum caution. The Turkish military's Operation 'Olive Branch' has been communicated to allied and neighbouring countries transparently and regularly from the start. The goal of this operation is peace and stability. We demand that the international community supports Operation 'Olive Branch' in its fight against terror and that they show solidarity with Turkey and the rural population."

Kurds are one of the largest ethnic groups in the world, around 40 million, marginalized with no state of their own. They stretch across an area including Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. The only internationally recognized Kurdish entity exists in Iraq with its own regional government, a booming economy, and security forces known as the Peshmerga.
Until 1991, it was illegal to speak Kurdish in public in Turkey. Broadcasting in Kurdish was banned until 2002, and until 2003, parents were forbidden to give their children Kurdish names. Kurdish-language public education is still heavily contested, with many Kurdish children forced to take classes in Turkish, a language they rarely learn at home.
The PKK has moderated its demands ahead of expected peace talks, and jailed leader Abdullah Ocallan has renounced violence and abandoned his goal of a separate state. For his part, Erdogan has advanced peace efforts more than his predecessors, promising long withheld cultural and language rights for Kurds.
But Turkey still has a long way to go before Kurds are treated with proper respect, said Raci Bilici, president of the Diyarbakir branch of the Human Rights Association, a Turkish rights group. The government still uses opaque anti-terrorism laws to oppress and detain Kurds, he adds.
