Driving Downtown Streets - 14th Street - Washington DC USA - Episode 5.

14th Street NW/SW is a street in Northwest and Southwest quadrants of Washington, D.C., located 1.25 miles (2.01 km) west of the U.S. Capitol. It runs from the 14th Street Bridge north to Eastern Avenue. Because it connects to one of the main bridges crossing the Potomac River into Virginia, 14th Street has always been a major transportation corridor. It was the location of one of the first streetcar lines, and today it is the location of several afternoon carpooling "slug lines", which allow commuters to meet the high-occupancy vehicle requirements of I-395, the Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway.
History
In the middle of the 20th century, 14th Street NW near the intersection of P Street was home to many car dealerships and was known as "auto row".[2] The Casino Royal at 14th and H Streets was one of the city's most popular nightclubs. The street was the location of race riots in 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
In the 1980s, a portion of 14th Street became known primarily for its red-light district. Many strip clubs and massage parlors were concentrated roughly between New York Avenue and K Street, while prostitutes plied their trade around Logan Circle. However, rising land values eventually pushed out the adult businesses. The Source Theatre, founded by Bart Whiteman, was given some credit for the area's revival. Whiteman stood outside the theater to escort people inside in order to make them feel safer.[4] The opening of a Whole Foods Market at 14th and P Streets in 2000 is also considered a major turning point for the neighborhood.
Washington DC
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as "Washington", "the District", or simply "D.C.", is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, one of the United States' founding fathers and the leader of the American Continental Army who won the Revolutionary War, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6 million, the sixth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.
The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.
A locally elected mayor and a 13‑member council have governed the District since 1973. However, the Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. D.C. residents elect a non-voting, at-large congressional delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, but the District has no representation in the U.S. Senate. The District receives three electoral votes in presidential elections as permitted by the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961.

Driving in Washington Street in Hoboken, NJ, USA from Observer Highway to 14th St (from one end to almost the other end. It ends in 15th St). Am driving northbound and the camera is a little bit to the right recording more to the east than to the west of this street. Washington Street is the main commercial street of the city of Hoboken. It has a lot of restaurants, real estate offices, stores, banks, residential buildings, and more. Hoboken is in Hudson County, New Jersey.

Street
A street is a public thoroughfare (usually paved) in a built environment. It is a public parcel of land adjoining buildings in an urban context, on which people may freely assemble, interact, and move about. A street can be as simple as a level patch of dirt, but is more often paved with a hard, durable surface such as concrete, cobblestone or brick. Portions may also be smoothed with asphalt, embedded with rails, or otherwise prepared to accommodate non-pedestrian traffic.

Marshall White
Marshall White (born April 30, 1982) is an American professional strongman athlete born in Houston, Texas. Marshall lived for a time Port Angeles, Washington, and in Pagosa Springs, Colorado with his then wife Rachel, whom he married in 2005, and divorced in 2013. Marshall was a Mortician who owned his own funeral home in Colorado- in addition to being an active professional athlete, and dad. He now resides in the Houston Metro area.
Strength Sports
Marshall played football for his junior high and high school in Texas. After graduating, Marshall joined "The Unit", a Strongman group in Cypress, Texas headed by longtime friend and Strongman Travis Ortmayer.
After training with "The Unit" for a year, Marshall applied for a job which would place him in Port Angeles, Washington.
He initially trained at "Marunde Muscle" with World's Strongest Man competitor, the late Jesse Marunde.
Marshall earned his pro card in 2006, and competed in the 2006 ASC Nationals, finishing in 7th place overall.

We are in the bridge tender's shanty on the Washington Street Drawbridge in Norwalk, Connecticut, where we see a boat coming up the Norwalk River headed for it's slip in the marina across the river. As soon as the operator gets confirmation that the boat can't fit, he opens the bridge. He starts by blowing the warning horn three times to alert pedestrians and traffic to clear the bridge. Then, the gates go down to prevent traffic from proceeding, then, he unlocks the leafs of the bridge and raises them to about 20 degrees open on either side. The captain of the vessel says he's through, and the operator lowers the bridge, locks it in place, and opens the gates again. Once traffic starts to proceed through again, we take a look out the other side of the shanty and see Walk Bridge, which is used by Metro North and Amtrak. Driving in Washington Street in Hoboken, NJ, USA from Observer Highway to 14th St (from one end to almost the other end. It ends in 15th St). Am driving northbound and the camera is a little bit to the right recording more to the east than to the west of this street. Washington Street is the main commercial street of the city of Hoboken. It has a lot of restaurants, real estate offices, stores, banks, residential buildings, and more. Hoboken is in Hudson County, New Jersey.

Opening Washington Street Drawbridge in Norwalk
We are in the bridge tender's shanty on the Washington Street Drawbridge in Norwalk, Connecticut, where we see a boat coming up the Norwalk River headed for it's slip in the marina across the river. As soon as the operator gets confirmation that the boat can't fit, he opens the bridge. He starts by blowing the warning horn three times to alert pedestrians and traffic to clear the bridge. Then, the gates go down to prevent traffic from proceeding, then, he unlocks the leafs of the bridge and raises them to about 20 degrees open on either side. The captain of the vessel says he's through, and the operator lowers the bridge, locks it in place, and opens the gates again. 14th Street NW/SW is a street in Northwest and Southwest quadrants of Washington, D.C., located 1.25 miles (2.01 km) west of the U.S. Capitol. It runs from the 14th Street Bridge north to Eastern Avenue. Because it connects to one of the main bridges crossing the Potomac River into Virginia, 14th Street has always been a major transportation corridor. It was the location of one of the first streetcar lines, and today it is the location of several afternoon carpooling "slug lines", which allow commuters to meet the high-occupancy vehicle requirements of I-395, the Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway.
History
In the middle of the 20th century, 14th Street NW near the intersection of P Street was home to many car dealerships and was known as "auto row".[2] The Casino Royal at 14th and H Streets was one of the city's most popular nightclubs. The street was the location of race riots in 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
In the 1980s, a portion of 14th Street became known primarily for its red-light district. Many strip clubs and massage parlors were concentrated roughly between New York Avenue and K Street, while prostitutes plied their trade around Logan Circle. However, rising land values eventually pushed out the adult businesses. The Source Theatre, founded by Bart Whiteman, was given some credit for the area's revival. Whiteman stood outside the theater to escort people inside in order to make them feel safer.[4] The opening of a Whole Foods Market at 14th and P Streets in 2000 is also considered a major turning point for the neighborhood.
Washington DC
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as "Washington", "the District", or simply "D.C.", is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, one of the United States' founding fathers and the leader of the American Continental Army who won the Revolutionary War, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6 million, the sixth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.
The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.
A locally elected mayor and a 13‑member council have governed the District since 1973. However, the Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. D.C. residents elect a non-voting, at-large congressional delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, but the District has no representation in the U.S. Senate. The District receives three electoral votes in presidential elections as permitted by the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961.

We are in the bridge tender's shanty on the Washington Street Drawbridge in Norwalk, Connecticut, where we see a boat coming up the Norwalk River headed for it's slip in the marina across the river. As soon as the operator gets confirmation that the boat can't fit, he opens the bridge. He starts by blowing the warning horn three times to alert pedestrians and traffic to clear the bridge. Then, the gates go down to prevent traffic from proceeding, then, he unlocks the leafs of the bridge and raises them to about 20 degrees open on either side. The captain of the vessel says he's through, and the operator lowers the bridge, locks it in place, and opens the gates again. Once traffic starts to proceed through again, we take a look out the other side of the shanty and see Walk Bridge, which is used by Metro North and Amtrak. Google Earth road trip. Washington D.C. to Washington state. I woke up one day and thought it would be a good idea to drive across North America. Probably would and, if I'd had tried harder in life, maybe I could afford to. i didn't, I can't, life goes on. Or does it? I must have spent months of my life looking through nowhere towns on Google Earth. So why not go on a virtual road trip... The technical aspect wasn't that hard. I put together a web based system to automatically pull the user from point A to B and take a picture at every frame. The images were saved by time index, so all I had to do was drag and drop them in Adobe Premiere and render. The web system worked great. I kicked it off and watched my hard drive fill up. Problems arose when I watched the footage back in Premiere...

In 1994 the Internet retail giant Amazon was founded in Seattle. The stream of new software, biotechnology, and Internet companies led to an economic revival, which increased the city's population by almost 50,000 between 1990 and 2000.
Seattle has a noteworthy musical history. From 1918 to 1951, there were nearly two dozen jazz nightclubs along Jackson Street, from the current Chinatown/International District, to the Central District. The jazz scene developed the early careers of Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Ernestine Anderson and others. Growth returned during and after World War II, due partially to the local Boeing company, which established Seattle as a center for aircraft manufacturing. The Seattle area developed as a technology center beginning in the 1980s, with companies like Microsoft becoming established in the region. In 1994 the Internet retail giant Amazon was founded in Seattle. The stream of new software, biotechnology, and Internet companies led to an economic revival, which increased the city's population by almost 50,000 between 1990 and 2000.
Seattle has a noteworthy musical history. From 1918 to 1951, there were nearly two dozen jazz nightclubs along Jackson Street, from the current Chinatown/International District, to the Central District. The jazz scene developed the early careers of Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Ernestine Anderson and others. Seattle is also the birthplace of rock musician Jimi Hendrix and the alternative rock style grunge.[12]

Google Earth road trip. Washington D.C. to Washington state.
I woke up one day and thought it would be a good idea to drive across North America. Probably would and, if I'd had tried harder in life, maybe I could afford to. i didn't, I can't, life goes on.
Or does it? I must have spent months of my life looking through nowhere towns on Google Earth. So why not go on a virtual road trip...
The technical aspect wasn't that hard. I put together a web based system to automatically pull the user from point A to B and take a picture at every frame. The images were saved by time index, so all I had to do was drag and drop them in Adobe Premiere and render.
The web system worked great. I kicked it off and watched my hard drive fill up. Problems arose when I watched the footage back in Premiere. The camera would suddenly jump around in dense cities or when gong around corners. It made watching the footage painful at times.
Turns out the only option was to watch the footage frame-by-frame and try to remove the snapping while retaining as much detail as possible. There were over 300,000 images in total so it took time and a lot of patience. A lot of patience.
The project was started in early 2015 and I kept putting off finishing it until now (mid-2016). It's not an important project and sifting through over 300,000 images was really boring. I honestly fell asleep in my chair at time. Although that could be attributed to my real job which is also very tedious at times.
Nevertheless, I finally finished it!
Washington D.C. to Washington state. 2763.7 miles. Estimated drive time of 40 hours and 17 minutes. Video drive time, just over 9 hours. Lots of broken down cars, idiots waving, rain, night, exploded animals...
Noting that this video is no way meant to disparage the Google car drivers or other road users. It was actually meant to show the difference in terrain and landscapes when traveling across America. unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much of a change. Looking back, it would have been more intelligent to do South to North.
