The White Princess

The White Princess is a 2013 historical novel by Philippa Gregory, part of her series The Cousins' War. It is the story of Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV of England and Elizabeth Woodville, and later wife of Henry VII and mother of Henry VIII.

In October 2013, The Telegraph reported that Starz is planning to develop a miniseries based on The White Princess. This adaptation would be a sequel to The White Queen, a 10-part 2013 television series which adapted Gregory's novels The White Queen (2009), The Red Queen (2010) and The Kingmaker's Daughter (2012).

Plot

Princess Elizabeth and her mother Elizabeth Woodville have survived the self-destruction of the Plantagenets. With her uncle and lover Richard III dead, young Elizabeth knows she must marry the new king Henry Tudor to ensure her family's safety. Henry and his scheming mother Margaret Beaufort know this match will secure his own claim and effectively end the Wars of the Roses. But the secret knowledge that her brother Richard, the York heir to the throne, is alive somewhere puts Elizabeth in a difficult position.

Mimi Stillman is an American flutist celebrated for her solo and chamber music performances internationally. A Yamaha Performing Artist, she has appeared as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, Hilton Head Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica Carlos Chávez (Mexico City), Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Texas Brazos Valley Symphony, Orchestra 2001, Ocean City Pops, Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, and Curtis Chamber Orchestra. She has appeared as recitalist and chamber musician at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Bard College, La Jolla Chamber Music Society, Kingston Chamber Music Festival, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Bay Chamber Concerts (ME), Verbier Festival (Switzerland), and Festival delle Nazioni (Italy).

Career

Stillman was born in Boston. At 12, she was the youngest wind player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner and received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1999. That same year she became the youngest wind player to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. She has been awarded fellowships from the Earhart and Bradley Foundations, and was a member of Astral Artists. In March 2012, she was honored with the Women in the Arts award from Women for Greater Philadelphia.

White

White is an achromatic color, literally a "color without hue", that is a mixture of the frequencies of all the colors of the visible spectrum. It is one of the most common colors in nature, the color of sunlight, snow, milk, chalk, limestone and other common minerals. In many cultures white represents or signifies purity, innocence, and light, and is the symbolic opposite of black, or darkness. According to surveys in Europe and the United States, white is the color most often associated with perfection, the good, honesty, cleanliness, the beginning, the new, neutrality, and exactitude.

In ancient Egypt and ancient Rome, priestesses wore white as a symbol of purity, and Romans wore a white toga as a symbol of citizenship. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance a white unicorn symbolized chastity, and a white lamb sacrifice and purity; the widows of kings dressed in white rather than black as the color of mourning. It sometimes symbolizes royalty; it was the color of the French kings (black being the color of the queens) and of the monarchist movement after the French Revolution as well as of the movement called the White Russians (not to be confounded with Belarus, literally "White Russia") who fought the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). Greek and Roman temples were faced with white marble, and beginning in the 18th century, with the advent of neoclassical architecture, white became the most common color of new churches, capitols and other government buildings, especially in the United States of America. It was also widely used in 20th century modern architecture as a symbol of modernity, simplicity and strength.
