To mark this year’s International Women’s Day, Melbourne photographer Fabrice Bigot has joined forces with Andy Dinan of MARS Gallery and Kerry Gardner, AM, Board Member for Global Fund for Women, to create a series of rose portraits for BLOOM, an exhibition running March 1–29 at MARS Gallery, 7 James Street, Melbourne, Vic. Gallery commissions from the exhibition will be donated to the Global Fund for Women to support anti-violence programs around the world. Visit globalfundforwomen.org.

“Working with plants and especially flowers is always a challenge. You are never given enough time to capture their beauty and chance is always part of the process. To photograph these 10 roses, I knew I would have little more than a month and therefore, I started a month ahead of the beginning of the season to search for the places and gardens where I would find the finest specimens to photograph in-situ. Because I like working with minimum equipment and available light, I had to get ready very early in the morning when the light is not too strong, the shadows still soft and full of details, and the flowers sometimes still covered in dew.

“Throughout the six weeks during which the roses were in full bloom, I spent my time walking around some of the most beautiful private gardens in Victoria, sometimes having to come back several times in order to capture one specimen at its best. Thanks to all these people who let me wander in their gardens, such as Michael Morrison, head gardener of the exquisite Cruden Farm.” Fabrice Bigot

Fabrice Bigot

Fabrice Bigot was born in 1969 in Paris, where he graduated with a degree in art history and cinema from Sorbonne University. Now living and working in Melbourne, Bigot is a photographic and video artist whose works explore the magic and poetry of nature found in both urban and suburban areas. His photography demonstrates his interest in film, especially film noir, as well as interests in the night, desire and the subconscious. Before moving to Australia in 2006, Bigot worked for 20 years as an assistant director on numerous French feature films and made experimental films using both analogue and digital technology.

Bigot collaborated technically and artistically with several European photographic and video artists before starting his own art practice. He staged his first solo exhibition, Naked Garden, in 2015 at Walker Street Gallery, Dandenong to critical acclaim. Recent series include Flores Venerae, which he exhibited at The Lyric Emerging Artist Gallery, Fitzroy, in 2017. Bigot is represented by MARS Gallery in Melbourne.

Andy Dinan, MARS Gallery
