The grazing grounds of the walrus
This heavy weight is known for its characteristic, massive teeth that stick out
of the upper jaw. They are horrible weapons. Another distinct feature is their
weight: males can weigh up to 1500 kilos. A large part of this body mass is a
thick layer of fat underneath leathery skin - and it is needed because these
large seals live in the polar sea on the edge of the pack ice.
Without their teeth the animals could not survive - they are used as tools for
many things. For one thing the teeth are used as ice picks to pull their giant
bodies back onto the ice, then they also use their teeth to rummage through
the mud on the ocean floor to search for snails, crabs and clams. Except for
us humans they should not have many predators. But there is one other and it
is primarily going for their young - the polar bear.
It is very difficult to observe walruses: the arctic climate is the first deterrent.
The Australian walrus specialist Jason Roberts has been living in Spitzbergen
for many years and has been studying walruses and their family hierarchy up
close. He takes us on an expedition to the 80th latitude where we will observe
walruses as they feed underwater as it has never been filmed before. We will
follow those heavy weights under the ice and will be confronted with one of
the rarest sharks - the Greenland shark.

E.T. is a 31-year-old Pacific walrus at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington.
He weighs over 3,400 lbs and is one of only 17 walruses in U.S. zoos and aquariums. E.T. came to the Zoo as an orphan from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
E.T. is named for his wrinkled resemblance to alien in the popular 1982 movie "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial."

The team use a very special underwater camera housing called the megadome which enables them to film in super wide angle, allowing the audience to see both above and below water simultaneously. With a fully grown mother walrus to contend with, David Reichart the camerman must take special care not to disturb his subject or risk a tusk in the head!

It's the walrus dance. Shake your booty. Scratch that itch. It's two tons of fun when big male walruses start rolling around on shore. Walruses are very touchy-feely and when they can't get someone to give them a backrub, they do it themselves, turning a back scratch into a dance as seen in this video shot in the Norwegian arctic.

Walrus
The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a large flippered marine mammal with a discontinuous distribution about the North Pole in the Arctic Ocean and subarctic seas of the Northern Hemisphere. The walrus is the only living species in the family Odobenidae and genus Odobenus. This species is subdivided into three subspecies: the Atlantic walrus (O. r. rosmarus) which lives in the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific walrus (O. r. divergens) which lives in the Pacific Ocean, and O. r. laptevi, which lives in the Laptev Sea of the Arctic Ocean.
Adult walruses are easily recognized by their prominent tusks, whiskers, and bulkiness. Adult males in the Pacific can weigh more than 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) and, among pinnipeds, are exceeded in size only by the two species of elephant seals. Walruses live mostly in shallow waters above the continental shelves, spending significant amounts of their lives on the sea ice looking for benthic bivalve mollusks to eat. Walruses are relatively long-lived, social animals, and they are considered to be a "keystone species" in the Arctic marine regions.

The Walrus
The Walrus is a Canadian general interest magazine which publishes long-form journalism on Canadian and international affairs, along with fiction and poetry by Canadian writers.
History
Creation
In 2002, David Berlin, a former editor and owner of the Literary Review of Canada, began promoting his vision of a world-class Canadian magazine. This led him to meet with then-Harper's editor Lewis H. Lapham to discuss creating a "Harper's North," which would combine the American magazine with 40 pages of Canadian content. As Berlin searched for funding to create that content, a mutual friend put him in touch with Ken Alexander, a former high school English and history teacher and then senior producer of CBC Newsworld's CounterSpin. Like Berlin, Alexander was hoping to found an intelligent Canadian magazine that dealt with world affairs.
Before long, the Chawkers Foundation, run by Alexander's family, had agreed to provide the prospective magazine with $5 million over five years, and the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation promised $150,000 for an internship program. This provided enough money to get by without the partnership with Harper's.

Polar bear
The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a carnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is a large bear, approximately the same size as the omnivorous Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi). A boar (adult male) weighs around 350–700 kg (772–1,543 lb), while a sow (adult female) is about half that size. Although it is the sister species of the brown bear, it has evolved to occupy a narrower ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting seals, which make up most of its diet. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time on the sea ice. Their scientific name means "maritime bear", and derives from this fact. Polar bears hunt their preferred food of seals from the edge of sea ice, often living off fat reserves when no sea ice is present. Because of their dependence on the sea ice, polar bears are classified as marine mammals.

For a few months every year, this beach is blanketed with large walruses who come here to "haul out." The zoo called the pup a 'sensation' and a 'premiere in the animal park's 100-year-old history', as births of walruses are rare worldwide. For the Hamburg zoo, it's the first birth of a walrus calf ever. The little one was born on June 15th, and due to the rarity of walrus births in captivity, there is hardly a record of how to raise the animal. In order to avoid any risk to the pup and its mum they were kept in the relative calm and quiet of the zoo's interior enclosure. The zoo called the pup a 'sensation' and a 'premiere in the animal park's 100-year-old history', as births of walruses are rare worldwide. For the Hamburg zoo, it's the first birth of a walrus calf ever. The little one was born on June 15th, and due to the rarity of walrus births in captivity, there is hardly a record of how to raise the animal. In order to avoid any risk to the pup and its mum they were kept in the relative calm and quiet of the zoo's interior enclosure. This heavy weight is known for its characteristic, massive teeth that stick out
of the upper jaw. They are horrible weapons. Another distinct feature is their
weight: males can weigh up to 1500 kilos. A large part of this body mass is a
thick layer of fat underneath leathery skin - and it is needed because these
large seals live in the polar sea on the edge of the pack ice.
Without their teeth the animals could not survive - they are used as tools for
many things. For one thing the teeth are used as ice picks to pull their giant
bodies back onto the ice, then they also use their teeth to rummage through
the mud on the ocean floor to search for snails, crabs and clams. Except for
us humans they should not have many predators. But there is one other and it
is primarily going for their young - the polar bear.
It is very difficult to observe walruses: the arctic climate is the first deterrent.
The Australian walrus specialist Jason Roberts has been living in Spitzbergen
for many years and has been studying walruses and their family hierarchy up
close. He takes us on an expedition to the 80th latitude where we will observe
walruses as they feed underwater as it has never been filmed before. We will
follow those heavy weights under the ice and will be confronted with one of
the rarest sharks - the Greenland shark.

The first baby walrus born in Germany was proudly presented today at Hamburg's Hagenbeck Zoo. The zoo called the pup a 'sensation' and a 'premiere in the animal park's 100-year-old history', as births of walruses are rare worldwide. For the Hamburg zoo, it's the first birth of a walrus calf ever. The little one was born on June 15th, and due to the rarity of walrus births in captivity, there is hardly a record of how to raise the animal. In order to avoid any risk to the pup and its mum they were kept in the relative calm and quiet of the zoo's interior enclosure. As for the name of the walrus baby, it will be decided by the visitors through a competition starting next week. Report by Claire Lomas.
