“One Hundred Percent American” (aka “Mary Pickford – 100% American”), 1918, directed by Arthur Rosson, produced by Famous Players-Lasky Corporation and the Liberty Loan Committee, isn't a "real" silent movie - it's a war bond drive short told in dramatic form. Mary Pickford is however quite charming and one of the best done films of this nature, even up against later "talkie" examples. Mary Pickford stars as a small town girl who while originally flippant upon hearing of the necessities of saving money and investing in war bonds, nevertheless denies herself luxuries like new dresses, ice cream sundaes, and even trolley tickets to save for war bonds. Her friend, however isn't quite so self-sacrificing.
This here is another WW1 short trying to get American's to donate money but the big difference here is that the film uses Hollywood talent. Mary Pickford, Loretta Blake and Monte Blue lead the cast for this Famous-Players production. This film here uses a lot of humor to get its message across and this can be seen in Pickford's performance, which comes off very good and quite funny.
The film is a propaganda piece that is trying to illustrate the importance of self-sacrifice in order to aid the war effort. At first in the film, Mary is frivolous and thinks nothing of wasting her money. However, at a bond rally she learns how important it is to economize and make sacrifice. The rest of the film is a preachy illustration of all the ways she can help the man overseas. In fact, by refusing to buy a soda, she is helping kill off the dreaded Hun!

Arthur Rosson
Arthur Rosson (24 August 1886 – 17 June 1960) was an English film director. He directed 61 films between 1917 and 1948. He also worked on many major films as a second unit director until 1960, particularly for Cecil B. DeMille.
Biography
Arthur Henry Rosson Sr born 14 June 1897, was the first child born of Jockey Horse Trainer Arthur Richard Rosson (1857-1935) & Hellen (née) Rochefort (1860-1933)
was born in Pau, France of British parents and died in Los Angeles, California. Rosson came from a film-making family. His brother, Harold Rosson, was an Academy Award-nominated cinematographer and several other family members were involved in the early film industry. He was also the brother of silent film actress Helene Rosson and actor and director Richard Rosson.
Siblings
The six children of Arthur Richard Rosson and Hellen Rochefort. Arthur Richard Rosson was also married to one Anna Hatz but no current data of siblings.

Arthur A. Ross
Arthur A. Ross (February 4, 1920 Chicago, Illinois - November 11, 2008 Los Angeles, California) was an American film and television screenwriter, best known for writing the Oscar-nominated script for Brubaker and for co-writing The Creature from the Black Lagoon. He was blacklisted in Hollywood during the Red Scare. His son is writer, producer, and director Gary Ross.

Mary Pickford
Mary Pickford (April 8, 1892 – May 29, 1979) was a Canadian-American motion picture actress, co-founder of the film studio United Artists and one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Known in her prime as "America's Sweetheart" and the "girl with the curls", Pickford was one of the Canadian pioneers in early Hollywood and a significant figure in the development of film acting. Pickford was one of the earliest stars to be billed under her name (film stars up until that time were usually unbilled), and was one of the most popular actresses of the 10s and 20s, earning the nickname "Queen of the Movies".
Pickford was awarded the second ever Academy Award for Best Actress for her first sound film role and also received an honorary Academy Award in 1976. In consideration of her contributions to American cinema, the American Film Institute ranked Pickford as 24th in its 1999 list of greatest female stars of classic Hollywood Cinema.

John Wayne
Marion Mitchell Morrison (born Marion Robert Morrison; May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979), known by his stage name John Wayne and by his nickname "Duke", was an American film actor, director, and producer. An Academy Award-winner for True Grit (1969), Wayne was among the top box office draws for three decades. An enduring American icon, for several generations of Americans he epitomized rugged masculinity and is famous for his demeanor, including his distinctive calm voice, walk, and height.
Born in Iowa, Wayne grew up in Southern California. He found work at local film studios when he lost his football scholarship to USC as a result of a bodysurfing accident. Initially working for the Fox Film Corporation, he mostly appeared in small bit parts. His first leading role came in Raoul Walsh's lavish widescreen epic The Big Trail (1930), which led to leading roles in numerous B movies throughout the 1930s, many of them in the Western genre.
Wayne's career took off in 1939, with John Ford's Stagecoach making him an instant mainstream star. Wayne went on to star in 142 pictures. Biographer Ronald Davis says: "John Wayne personified for millions the nation's frontier heritage. Eighty-three of his movies were Westerns, and in them he played cowboys, cavalrymen, and unconquerable loners extracted from the Republic's central creation myth."

“One Hundred Percent American” (aka “Mary Pickford – 100% American”), 1918, directed by Arthur Rosson, produced by Famous Players-Lasky Corporation and the Liberty Loan Committee, isn't a "real" silent movie - it's a war bond drive short told in dramatic form. Mary Pickford is however quite charming and one of the best done films of this nature, even up against later "talkie" examples. Mary Pickford stars as a small town girl who while originally flippant upon hearing of the necessities of saving money and investing in war bonds, nevertheless denies herself luxuries like new dresses, ice cream sundaes, and even trolley tickets to save for war bonds. Her friend, however isn't quite so self-sacrificing.
This here is another WW1 short trying to get American's to donate money but the big difference here is that the film uses Hollywood talent. Mary Pickford, Loretta Blake and Monte Blue lead the cast for this Famous-Players production. This film here uses a lot of humor to get its message across and this can be seen in Pickford's performance, which comes off very good and quite funny.
The film is a propaganda piece that is trying to illustrate the importance of self-sacrifice in order to aid the war effort. At first in the film, Mary is frivolous and thinks nothing of wasting her money. However, at a bond rally she learns how important it is to economize and make sacrifice. The rest of the film is a preachy illustration of all the ways she can help the man overseas. In fact, by refusing to buy a soda, she is helping kill off the dreaded Hun!

Hoffman Sr. and Jr.,and never released because of the collapse and merger of the Hoffman's Liberty Company into the newly-formed Republic operation in mid-1935, and consequently has two different sets of actors and production crew members. The "Hoffman" group was made up of director Arthur Rosson, writers Frank Gay (who also doubled as Associate Producer) and W. Scott Darling, cameraman Tom Galligan, editor Dan Milner, assistant director Milton Brown, noted animal trainer Jack Lindell(who also had a film role) and actors Frank Campeau, Wally Albright, Edward Peil Sr. and Morgan Brown. It was filmed in the vicinity of Fredonia, Arizona and this group in no way functioned as a 2nd unit....

Scott Darling, cameraman Tom Galligan, editor Dan Milner, assistant director Milton Brown, noted animal trainer Jack Lindell(who also had a film role) and actors Frank Campeau, Wally Albright, Edward Peil Sr. and Morgan Brown. It was filmed in the vicinity of Fredonia, Arizona and this group in no way functioned as a 2nd unit. They were making their own film. The film went unreleased, and George A. Hirliman took it over for his Condor Productions unit at Grand National, and shot additional footage directed by Samuel Diege, with Jack Greenhalgh on camera, Carl Pierson editing, two songs from Lew Porter, and Arthur Hoerl and Paul Franklin writing additional dialogue for the "Hirliman" flash-back cast of Hobart Bosworth, Harry Harvey and his son Harry Harvey, Jr. The Hoffman group was in Arizona, where a group of ranchers in the area south of the Utah border and east of the Colorado River had appealed to the Department of the Interior for relief against the great herds of wild mustangs that roamed the range, already stripped of most vegetation by dust storms and drought. The U.S. government contractors, under the authority of the Taylor Grazing Bill, undertook the task of rounding up nearly 3000 wild mustangs using airplanes, mounted cowboys and bright reflectors. Frank Gay wrote a wild horse story built around this impending roundup involving a rancher's son(Wally Albright) and a crusty old-timer (Frank Campeau). Jack Lindell had work for his stable of trained horses, including "Rex", King of the Wild Horses (as "El Diablo",the villain horse) and "Sheik", the New Wonder Hose (as "Whitey", the hero horse), who are the only credited "names" on the posters and advertising.

This here is another WW1 short trying to get American's to donate money but the big difference here is that the film uses Hollywood talent. Mary Pickford, Loretta Blake and Monte Blue lead the cast for this Famous-Players production. This film here uses a lot of humor to get its message across and this can be seen in Pickford's performance, which comes off very good and quite funny.
The film is a propaganda piece that is trying to illustrate the importance of self-sacrifice in order to aid the war effort. “One Hundred Percent American” (aka “Mary Pickford – 100% American”), 1918, directed by Arthur Rosson, produced by Famous Players-Lasky Corporation and the Liberty Loan Committee, isn't a "real" silent movie - it's a war bond drive short told in dramatic form. Mary Pickford is however quite charming and one of the best done films of this nature, even up against later "talkie" examples. Mary Pickford stars as a small town girl who while originally flippant upon hearing of the necessities of saving money and investing in war bonds, nevertheless denies herself luxuries like new dresses, ice cream sundaes, and even trolley tickets to save for war bonds. Her friend, however isn't quite so self-sacrificing.
This here is another WW1 short trying to get American's to donate money but the big difference here is that the film uses Hollywood talent. Mary Pickford, Loretta Blake and Monte Blue lead the cast for this Famous-Players production. This film here uses a lot of humor to get its message across and this can be seen in Pickford's performance, which comes off very good and quite funny.

Durante la Rivoluzione Francese, numerosi aristocratici francesi sfuggono alla morte grazie alle audaci imprese della Primula Rossa e dei suoi amici e collaboratori, esponenti dell'aristocrazia inglese. Fra le ultime fughe progettate, c'è quella del conte de Tournay, ex ambasciatore francese a Londra, e della sua famiglia. Uno degli emissari della Primula Rossa, travestito da prete, visita la famiglia in carcere e porta un messaggio di speranza. Mentre i prigionieri sono fatti salire su un carro che li condurrà alla ghigliottina, le guardie trattengono il conte: Robespierre vuole interrogarlo. La contessa e i suoi figli sono salvati con un'abile stratagemma e condotti in salvo in Inghilterra.
A Parigi, Robespierre fa chiamare Chauvelin, nuovo ambasciatore a Londra. Convocato il conte de Tournay, gli offrono la salvezza dalla ghigliottina in cambio della sua collaborazione per scoprire l'identità della Primula Rossa. La Primula Rossa è sir Percy Blakeney, un ricco baronetto inglese amico del principe di Galles. Sir Percy cela la sua vera natura sotto l'apparenza del futile damerino, per allontanare i sospetti. La sua finzione è così ben riuscita che neanche sua moglie, la francese Marguerite St. Just, sospetta la verità. Sebbene i due sposi siano innamorati, sir Percy non si fida più della moglie che in passato ha denunciato il marchese de St. Cyr, causando la morte di tutta la sua famiglia sulla ghigliottina.
Attraverso la sua rete di spie, Chauvelin scopre che Armand St. Just, fratello di lady Blakeney, è uno degli agenti della Primula Rossa. Chauvelin ordina l'arresto di Armand e usa la minaccia di farlo ghigliottinare per costringere Marguerite ad aiutarlo a scoprire l'identità della Primula Rossa. Chauvelin sa che la Primula Rossa sarà fra gli invitati ad un prossimo ballo.

Marguerite passa l'informazione a Chauvelin, che si apposta nella biblioteca. Qui trova sir Percy, apparentemente addormentato. Mentre aspetta, Chauvelin si addormenta. Al suo risveglio trova un messaggio della Primula Rossa, che si burla di lui.
La mattina dopo il ballo, Percy Blakeney e Marguerite raggiungono la loro casa in campagna. Qui Marguerite confessa al marito l'arresto del fratello e il suo accordo con Chauvelin. Durante la loro discussione, Percy apprende la verità sulla denuncia del marchese de St. Cyr: il nobile aveva fatto arrestare Marguerite perché suo figlio era innamorato di lei. 65 min - Mystery | Comedy - 22 June 1945 (USA)Jack Haley (the Tin Man of Oz) plays Larry Elliot, who is a chess reporter and not the sharpest tool in the shed, Larry is confronted with an ultimatum if he wants to keep his job as a newspaper reporter. He is forced to cover a big harvest festival held at a winery in Grape City. At the paper he is known to miss out on bigger stories to cover more trivial events of minor interest.
Larry begins with getting off the bus at the wrong stop, Grape Center instead of City. He has brought his girlfriend Sally Warren, who deals in antiques, to accompany him to the winery. Accidents rarely come alone, and the man sitting next to Larry on the bus is found murdered, holding a chess piece in his hand when the police find him. Of course Larry, who is a chess expert, is blamed for the killing.
All the bus passengers are held in custody at Grape Center awaiting the sheriff to arrive and start the murder investigation. Before he arrives, Sally finds an antique set of chess pieces she wants to acquire, and involves Larry in her quest to buy them. The set is said to have been the property of Kubla Khan in the 12th century, and were brought to the West by Marco Polo. Unfortunately the set is divided between the two twins owning the winery, Charles and Preston Waldeck, and they haven't spoken to each other in ten years.
Sally manages to acquire the white set pieces from Preston. When Larry is about to get the black pieces from Charles, both he and Charles are knocked out by an unknown attacker, who also steals the black set pieces.
The sheriff arrives to town, and starts conducting his investigation. The prime suspect is convicted murderer Deacon Markham, who is the man who first sold the antique chess set to the Waldeck brothers, after stealing it from its rightful owner. The theory is that Markham now wants the set back to sell it back to the forst owner and get the money he needs to escape the country. Cast:
