Nitrous acid

Nitrous acid (molecular formula HNO₂) is a weak and monobasic acid known only in solution and in the form of nitrite salts.

Nitrous acid is used to make diazides from amines; this occurs by nucleophilic attack of the amine onto the nitrite, reprotonation by the surrounding solvent, and double-elimination of water. The diazide can then be liberated to give a carbene or carbenoid.

Structure

In the gas phase, the planar nitrous acid molecule can adopt both a cis and a trans form. The trans form predominates at room temperature, and IR measurements indicate it is more stable by around 2.3 kJ mol⁻¹.

Preparation

When cold, dilute solutions of nitrite ion, NO₂⁻ are carefully acidified, a light blue solution of nitrous acid is produced. Free nitrous acid is unstable and decomposes rapidly. It can be produced by dissolving dinitrogen trioxide in water according to the equation

Gypsy jazz

Gypsy jazz (also known as gypsy swing or hot club jazz) is a style of jazz music often said to have been started by guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt in the 1930s. Because its origins are largely in France it is often called by the French name, "jazz manouche", or alternatively, "manouche jazz", even in English language sources. The term is now commonly used for this style of music.

Django was foremost among a group of Romani guitarists working in and around Paris in the 1930s through the 1950s, a group which also included the brothers Baro, Sarane, and Matelo Ferret and Reinhardt's brother Joseph "Nin-Nin" Reinhardt.

Many of the musicians in this style worked in Paris in various popular Musette ensembles. The Musette style waltz remains an important component in the gypsy jazz repertoire. Reinhardt was noted for combining a dark, chromatic gypsy flavor with the swing articulation of the period. This combination is critical to this style of jazz. In addition to this, his approach continues to form the basis for contemporary gypsy jazz guitar. Reinhardt's most famous group, the Quintette du Hot Club de France, also brought fame to jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli.

Jazz Rhythm is a short animated film distributed by Columbia Pictures. The film is part of a series featuring the comic strip character Krazy Kat.

Plot

Sports aficionados from faraway come to a stadium to watch an event. Although the event features a boxing ring, the event is not a boxing match. Rather, it's a contest between two pianists playing animated pianos. One of them is Krazy Kat who uses a standard piano. His opponent is a lion who uses an upright piano.

The lion is first to play. Despite getting some disturbance from a passing bee, the lion manages to perform without flaws.

Krazy is next to perform. Krazy also performs perfectly, thanks to not being disrupted.

After the pianists performed, they rest in their corners like boxers who been through a tough fight. Each of them has a cornerman who is a rat, and tries to keep them cool.

Moments later the third round begins. This time it's a boxing match between the two pianos as the instruments trade punches. After some exchange, Krazy's piano comes out the winner. Krazy celebrates by playing his piano again. The lion and the other piano, despite being bested, join Krazy's play minutes later.

Lewis structure

Lewis structures (also known as Lewis dot diagrams, electron dot diagrams, Lewis dot formulas, Lewis dot structures, and electron dot structures) are diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule. A Lewis structure can be drawn for any covalently bonded molecule, as well as coordination compounds. The Lewis structure was named after Gilbert N. Lewis, who introduced it in his 1916 article The Atom and the Molecule. They are similar to electron dot diagrams in that the valence electrons in lone pairs are represented as dots, but they also contain lines to represent shared pairs in a chemical bond (single, double, triple, etc.).

Lewis structures show each atom and its position in the structure of the molecule using its chemical symbol. Lines are drawn between atoms that are bonded to one another (pairs of dots can be used instead of lines). Excess electrons that form lone pairs are represented as pairs of dots, and are placed next to the atoms.
