Greetings all.

The Funky16Corners 2018 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul 2 has begun!

Example

We continue this year’s Summer of Soul mix series with a new mix from my man Ben Gibson, of the Hit, Git and Split and the South London Soul Train.

A few words from the DJ:

As always, it’s a massive pleasure to be involved and featured here on the very awesome Funk16Corners.com!

Larry has been a long time musical mentor to me! (as I’m sure he has been to all of you as well!)

He’s hipped me to multiple 45s and groups across the years that were outside of my radar! (as my bank manager can truly attest to!) so to be able to contribute to his own ‘Summer of Soul’ mixtape series is a very minuscule way I can give something back to a site that will hopefully continue long into the future for all of us!

If you like what you hear from Larry, myself and all of the other phenomenal contributors within this series then be sure to tip a few Pound coins (or Dollars) into the online bucket to ensure this Funk & Soul institution continues well on into the future!

What you have below from me, for your aural pleasure, is just shy of 75 minutes of my current favorite spins across the two nights I resident DJ for in London, ‘The South London Soul Train’ and my very own “baby”, ‘The Hit, Git & Split’ night with DJ Eops in Hackney in East London!

I hope you enjoy listening to this mix as much as I enjoyed putting it together!

See you on the flip side!

Ben x

https://facebook.com/TheHitGitAndSplit

We will continue with a new mix every week for the duration of the summer, with a selection of stellar contributions from some of my (and your) favorite selectors including DJ Prestige, Ben Gibson, DJ Prime Mundo, DJ RP of Funkdefy, Vincent the Soul Chef, Chris Lujan of the M-Tet, DJ Bluewater, HeavySoulBrutha Dave B. and new contributor, DJ Scott Boyko and Soultaker73.

The pledging will continue this year with Patreon (click here or on the logo below to go to the Funky16Corners page) , where you will be able to spread your contributions out over the entire year, which will help cover the ongoing server/broadcast/hardware expenses. This year has seen the move to 100 percent live broadcasting (Mixlr.com/Funky16corners)  and continued hardware and software upgrades at Funky16Corners central, to keep the radio/podcasting experience as seamless and groovy as possible. So please dig deep so we can continue to do the same, and if you’re already a Patreon donor, please accept my heartfelt thanks!

Example

In addition to all the broadcasts and the blogging all of the Funky16Corners and Iron Leg mix archives will continue.

I am also including a Paypal donation button (below) if you’d rather donate in a lump sum instead of the rolling donation in Patreon.

Don’t forget, my weekly radio show for WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio, Testify! is on the air live, every Wednesday night from 10-12. If you dig Funky16Corners and/or Iron Leg I think you’ll dig it. So tune in when you get a chance!

Greetings all.

The Funky16Corners 2018 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul 2 has begun!

Example

We continue this year’s Summer of Soul mix series with a new mix from my man Soultaker73.

A few words from the DJ:

“I just want to first off thank Larry for inviting me to the festivities this year.  This is my second appearance here on the Funky 16 Corners website after first doing the pledge drive back in 2015.  This is the first time in a year since I spun my records.  I hadn’t had the drive to play my records much after my mother passed away.  When Larry asked me if I wanted to participate this year, I was like it’s a good time to dust off my turntables and records for a good cause.  I always come here to the Funky 16 Corners to learn about an artist that I may not know about or to hear something I haven’t heard before.  It’s always good to have someone like Larry to share his knowledge and history on this music.  That’s why I hope everyone supports the website so we can keep this knowledge base going for years to come.
I always say that the best medicine for dealing with the everyday grind called life, is your music that you like to play.  So with that, here’s a second dose of The Medicine.”

Greetings all.

The Funky16Corners 2018 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul 2 has begun!

Example

We continue this year’s Summer of Soul mix series with a joint from my man DJ Prestige. A few words from the man himself:

“Another year, another pledge drive for the Mighty Funky 16 Corners. I have been feeling vibes people. Vibes from JA, and like the funk and soul I’ve searched for for years, I had been secretly stockpiling Jamaican 45s at the same time. This year has been a boon for JA records for me. I had some numb skull from a North Jersey record store tell me: “There are no reggae records in New Jersey.” (Prime Mundo was there to witness). So, just to prove him wrong, I’ve bought over 300 reggae forty fives this year alone (and it’s only June) in the Garden State. So there comic book guy aka record guy, you have no idea what you are talking about. Stop wasting my time, we are here for the records pal, not your “No you may not” attitude. Whether he likes it or not, we always get the records. Speaking of, this lot I used on the mix has a few pops, skips, and jumps, so don’t fret, the music is mixed all live, and all in one take. You don’t get a second chance live, so that’s how it goes. The cover is based on the Bionic Dub record from Dub Specialist out on Studio One manipulated by yours truly. I also tried to incorporate some Six Million Dollar Man samples to go with the mix, I know Oscar Goldman would have been proud. Enjoy, and if you like this mix, make sure you first, pledge to Larry and F16 Corners, then pass it on!. Thanks for listening. Cheers.”

Greetings all.

The Funky16Corners 2018 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul 2 launches this Sunday, June 17th!

As we have done for the past 13 (?!?) years, I come to you asking that if you dig what Funky16Corners does, the weekly posts, Funky16Corners Radio Show, Iron Leg Radio Show, Testify! (my show for WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio), all of the podcasts/archives and the various and sundry Funky16Corners mix archives (containing literally hundreds of downloadable mixes by myself and some of the finest selectors working today), that you donate toward the upkeep thereof.

There are server space/bandwidth, hardware/software maintenance, and broadcast expenses that have to be taken care of to keep this behemoth of the interwebs rolling, and if you think that is a worthy cause, there are two options.

You can choose to make a rolling/monthly donation via Patreon, or you can click on the Paypal link and make a one time, lump sum donation (all links below). Either way, no matter what you can afford to chip in will be greatly appreciated and it all goes back into Funky16Corners.

The Funky16Corners web zine started in 2000, the blog in 2004, the Funky16Corners Radio Show in 2008, the Iron Leg Radio Show since 2011 and Testify! since May of 2017 and all episodes are available in the archives and as podcasts in iTunes or any other podcast aggregator

This year we will once again offer up a new mix every week for the duration of the summer, with a selection of stellar contributions from some of my (and your) favorite selectors including DJ Prestige, Ben Gibson, DJ Prime Mundo, DJ RP of Funkdefy, Vincent the Soul Chef, Chris Lujan of the M-Tet, DJ Bluewater, HeavySoulBrutha Dave B. and new contributor, DJ Scott Boyko (with possible DJs yet to be named!).

Lloyd Price Orchestra – It’s Your Thing

Greetings all.

Here’s a crazy one.

Lloyd Price was of course a New Orleans R&B/soul star from 1952 when he hit with ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’ on into the mid-1970s (though he has continued to perform into his 80s).

Over the course of his career Price has released albums and 45s by his band, including the great ‘This is My Band’ in 1963 (featuring James Booker on organ) and a number of 45s, including today’s selection.

Price ran the Lloyd Price’s Turntable label for a few years at the end of the 1960s, releasing records by himself, the Coasters, Howard Tate and the Lloyd Price Orchestra.

What makes today’s selection unusual, is that the label says that it was recorded in Jamaica!

The record was arranged by Curley Palmer, who had played guitar with the Coasters and the production is credited to Price and Arthur Jenkins (who produced the Coasters 1969 Turntable 45).

I hve not been able to find any information that indicates how Price and his band ended up in Jamaica, or if it was really his band and not a bunch of Jamaican session musicians.

The version of the Isley Brothers ‘It’s Your Thing’ runs at a leisurely yet funky pace, with some groovy electric piano, percussion and horns.

If anyone can fill in the blanks on this one I would be much obliged.

Until next week.

The Groovers – Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday

Greetings all.

Today’s selection is an object lesson in how common band names and cover material can send you down all kinds of dark alleys.

I picked up the Groovers 45 you see before you a few years back on the strength of both sides being soul covers, even though I’d never heard of the band.

I recorded the 45, and into the box it went.

In the time since, I picked up another 45 by a group called the Groovers, but had no idea it was the same group.

The fact that some online resources contained conflicting (and incorrect, this is not the LA band that recorded for Minit and Teri De) information didn’t help matters.

This particular Groovers appears to have been another white showband on the Beach Music scene who recorded for the Fredericksburg, VA labels Groovy (a cover of Rex Garvin and the Mighty Cravers ‘I Gotta Go Now (Up On the Floor)’) and TCB (the Goffin/King number ‘I Need You’) and two 45s for A&M, all produced by Warren Harding Jr and at least a few of them arranged by none other than Fonce Mizell (?!?).

My educated guess is that these were done when the Mizell brothers were attending Howard University in DC.

The version of ‘I Gotta Go Now’ has a garagey edge to it, as does their take on Ain’t Too Proud To Beg’ (I haven’t heard their TCB single).

The Groovers take on William Bell’s ‘Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday’ is very groovy indeed. Featuring some subtle and soulful guitar, gospel-inflected organ, tastefully applied strings and great vocals.

‘Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday’ seems to have brought the group some success, having charted regionally early in 1970.

According to a Fredericksburg music site, the Groovers were together from the mid-50s until the mid-80s (and a few of the members seem to still be playing today).

I hope you dig the tune, and I’ll see you all next week.

Fred Wesley – Still On the Loose

Listen/Download – Fred Wesley – Still On the Loose MP3

Greetings all.

The 45 you see before you today was a very pleasant surprise when I picked it up some years ago.

Fred Wesley was of course familiar to me (and should be to you) as the trombonist/bandleader with the JBs as well as the Funkadelic-adjacent Horny Horns.

‘Still On the Loose’, released in 1980, was from the period after Fred’s George Clinton years, when Wesley was attempting to establish himself as a bandleader under his own name.

He recorded the ‘House Party’ album for Curtom, which was at the time being distributed by RSO Records.

‘Still On the Loose’ is a mellow, yet still funky, era-specific sound with echoes of the P-Funk, with traces of disco on the edges.

Fred not only plays much ‘bone (apologies to JB) but also takes lead vocal duties (as well as producing).

The result is a dance-floor friendly number with a sing along chorus.

The ‘House Party’ album made it into the R&B Top 40, but according to Wesley’s autobiography ‘Hit Me Fred’ RSO dropped Curtom from distribution as the record was gaining steam and killed its momentum.

It’s a groovy one, and I hope you dig it.

See you all next week.
