Sir Elton Hercules John, CBE (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight; 25 March 1947) is an English singer, songwriter, and composer. He has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin as his songwriting partner since 1967; they have collaborated on more than 30 albums to date. In his five-decade career Elton John has sold more than 300 million records, making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. He has more than fifty Top 40 hits, including seven consecutive No. 1 US albums, 58 Billboard Top 40 singles, 27 Top 10, four No. 2 and nine No. 1. For 31 consecutive years (1970–2000) he had at least one song in the Billboard Hot 100. His single "Candle in the Wind 1997" sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling single in the history of the UK and US singles charts. He has also composed music, produced records, and has occasionally acted in films. John owned Watford Football Club from 1976 to 1987, and 1997 to 2002. He is an honorary Life President of the club, and in 2014 had a stand named after him at the club's home stadium.
"Your Song" is a ballad composed and performed by English musician Elton John with lyrics by his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. It originally appeared on John's self-titled second album (1970).
The song was released in the United States in October 1970 as the B-side to "Take Me to the Pilot". Both received airplay, but "Your Song" was preferred by disc jockeys and replaced "Take Me to the Pilot" as the A-side, eventually making the top ten on both the UK and US charts.
In 1998, "Your Song" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2004 the song was placed at number 137 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
A demo version was included on John's 1990 box set album To Be Continued. The song has been covered by a number of artists, including Ellie Goulding, whose version reached number two on the UK Singles Chart in late 2010.
Taupin wrote the song's lyrics after breakfast one morning on the roof of 20 Denmark Street, London, where John worked for a music publishing firm as an office boy, hence the line "I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss".
John is a common English name and surname:
John may also refer to:
A song is a single (and often standalone) work of music intended to be sung by the human voice with distinct and fixed pitches and patterns using sound and silence and a variety of forms that often include the repetition of sections. Written words created specifically for music or for which music is specifically created, are called lyrics. If a pre-existing poem is set to composed music in classical music it is an art song. Songs that are sung on repeated pitches without distinct contours and patterns that rise and fall are called chants. Songs in a simple style that are learned informally are often referred to as folk songs. Songs that are composed for professional singers are called popular songs. These songs, which have broad appeal, are often composed by professional songwriters, composers and lyricists. Art songs are composed by trained classical composers for concert performances. Songs are performed live and recorded. Songs may also appear in plays, musical theatre, stage shows of any form, and within operas.

Live performance visuals - Elton 60, New York Elton John celebrated his 60th birthday by treating a star-studded audience to an epic performance at Madison Square Gardens and Kate directed several films for the show. Your Song was the last track of the evening and in order to enhance the emotional mood the film uses a sequence of beautiful, abstract graphics which have been animated entirely to the music. Kate also designed the packaging for DVD of the show. Credits Client: Twenty First Artists Production company: Intro Design and direction: Kate Dawkins Animation: Cassiano Prado
The song chronicles the effort of Freddie Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life; he was dying from complications due to HIV/AIDS, although his illness had not yet been made public in spite of ongoing media speculation claiming that he was seriously ill. Mercury was so ill when the band recorded the song in 1990, that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it. Recalling Mercury's performance, May states; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' — vodka down — and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal." The lyrics are full of allusions, metaphors and other figures of speech, making it somewhat difficult to understand. Thinly disguised tragedy...
Live performance visuals - The Red Piano show, Las Vegas One of several films Kate directed for Elton John’s massive sell-out Red Piano show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The show was art directed by David LaChapelle and the visuals played out on one of the largest LED screens in the world. It was essential that the films provided a show-stopping backdrop. I’m Still Standing is an excessive and flamboyant collage of Elton’s iconic looks through the past made using a combination of archive footage and bold, colourful graphics. Goodbye Norma Jeane, though I never, knew you at all you had the grace to hold yourself while those around you crawled. They crawled out of the woodwork and they whispered into your brain. They set you on the treadmill and they made you change your name. It seems to me you lived your life like a candle in the wind. Never knowing who to cling to when the rain set in. I would've liked to've known you but I was just a kid. Your candle burned out long before your legend ever did. Loneliness was tough, toughest role you ever played. Hollywood created a superstar and fame was the price you paid. Even when you died, oh the press still hounded you. All the papers had to say was that Marilyn, was found in the nude. It seems to me, you lived your life like a candle in the wind. Never knowing...

Probably hailed as one of the most important songwriters of her generation, Brenda Russell’s music has touched a nerve with both her fans as well as musicians that have recorded her music for well over 30 years. The Brooklyn, New York native returned home to perform at The Blue Note Jazz Club’s 30th Anniversary performance celebration featuring the George Duke Trio. Grammy-Award Winning bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spaulding and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington backed Mr. Duke and Miss. Russell in what would be two sold-out nights of fire-filled jazz and R & B. Russell moved to Hamilton, Ontario when she was a teen and was bitten by the music bug by her parents who were professional musicians while living in New York. Although Hamilton was a major cultural adjustment for her, she got her first...

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside I'm not one of those who can easily hide I don't have much money but boy if I did I'd buy a big house where we both could live If I was a sculptor, but then again, no Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show I know it's not much but it's the best I can do My gift is my song and this one's for you And you can tell everybody this is your song It may be quite simple but now that it's done I hope you don't mind I hope you don't mind that I put down in words How wonderful life is while you're in the world I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song It's for people like you that keep it turned on So excuse me forg...

It used to be a sweet sensation
No price too high for love
Now I pay for this bitter taste
And the price is not enough
Such cruel sport for your kicks
Such hard knocks on my heart
How long before the pain ends
Tell me where living starts
And lovers leap off burning buildings
Waking up on a sky high wire
Desperation leaves us clinging
On the edge of a house on fire
Lovers leap off burning buildings
Live our life on borrowed time
Every flame that ever moved you
Touched your lips but never mine
Lovers leap off burning buildings
No room for conversation
Cold stares and angry words
Fall in pieces from our faces
We read "do not disturb"
Some lovers just go hungry
Others beg for just a bite
You use me under pressure
