Sylvia Young Theatre School is an independent school in the Marylebone area, London, England. It is a specialist performing arts school named after its founder and principal Sylvia Young.
The Sylvia Young Theatre School was founded in 1972 with part-time classes in East London. It was established as a full-time school in 1981 on Drury Lane but due to expansion it moved to Rossmore Road, Marylebone in 1983. The school aims to provide a sound basis on which to build a career in performance media (theatre, television etc.), whilst ensuring that academic studies are of a consistently high standard.
Students either attend the full-time school (students aged 10 to 16 years), the part-time school on Thursday evenings or Saturdays (students aged 4 to 18 years) or holiday schools (students aged 7 to 18 years). Experience days and adult classes are also available.
Students from the Sylvia Young Theatre School have appeared in TV, film and theatre productions, including main roles in Matilda, Billy Elliott, The Lion King, The Bodyguard, Les Misérables, and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. Alumni include National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company actors and performers in TV and music, including Billie Piper, Denise Van Outen, Tom Fletcher, Matt Willis, Amy Winehouse, Rita Ora, Nathan Sykes, Jenna Russell, Emma Bunton, and members of the cast of East Enders past and present.

A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.
In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary and secondary education. Kindergarten or pre-school provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may also be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.

Follow 12-year-old Jane Horn as she sets out on her showbiz career in this Children's ITV documentary that goes behind the scenes at the Sylvia Young Theatre School. (Are you reading this, Jane? We'd love to hear an update from you!) But by far the most fun we can have whilst viewing this is playing a game of "Before They Were Famous". Do you recognise any of the kids caught on camera? If so, leave a comment and I'll add an annotation pointing them out - so make sure you've got annotations switched on if you're playing along. So far, I think I've spotted Denise Van Outen, Danniella Westbrook, Sam Womack, and Paul Parris, who played Matthew in Grange Hill. (In fact, if there are any fans of that particular show watching, I think half the cast went to Sylvia Young's - it's just a matter of p...
