The 2008 K2 disaster occurred on 1 August 2008, when eleven mountaineers from international expeditions died on K2, the second-highest mountain on Earth. Three others were seriously injured. The series of deaths, over the course of the Friday ascent and Saturday descent, was the worst single accident in the history of K2 mountaineering. Some of the specific details remain uncertain, with different plausible scenarios for timing and actions by different climbers when reported later in eyewitness accounts from survivors or from radio communications of climbers who died later (sometimes minutes later) in the course of events on K2 that day.

Vanessa O'Brien is an expert mountaineer. She is the fastest woman to climb the highest peak on every continent and the first American and British woman to climb K2, the second-highest mountain in the world.
Here, we talk with her about why Mt. Everest isn't the hardest mountain in the world to climb, and why so fewer who attempt K2 ever make it to the top. You can learn more about O'Brien's adventures by following her on Facebook and Twitter. Following is a transcript of the video.
So when comparing Everest versus K2, they are very, very different.
First, you have two different countries. You have Nepal versus Pakistan so I'd say technically it's more challenging to get to Pakistan to get the visas, the logistics.
You've got different tracks in, so the track into Pakistan to get to K2 base camp involves traveling over a glacier. A glacier is harder to climb, you've got mixed rock, which makes twisting an ankle very, very easy.
When you're going up to Everest Base Camp, you're just on a dirt trail so it's very, very easy.
Also, when you're traveling on K2, you're packing your whole expedition and you're building tents along the way, when you're traveling to Everest Base Camp, you're staying at teahouses so you don't have to travel in tents.
When you're on the actual climb, K2 is shaped like a triangle so it's demanding 110% day one, whereas Everest, there's twists and turns, so it's not always climbing steep.
Weather is much more unpredictable on K2 and I would say the technical climbing on K2 is hard so Everest has the Hillary step, which everyone's heard about, that's one obstacle. But for the most part it's pretty — the paths are well laid-out because a lot of people climb Everest every year where K2, there is very few expeditions that climb because there's such an unpredictability of summits.
And it's more technical so, it's more of a mixed rock, ice, and alpine climb so you have places like House's Chimney and Black Pyramid, which are hard rock climbs in the middle of an alpine climb. So very, very different.
If I look statistically, there's a 40% chance of no summits in any one year so this is a really tough mountain. There's less than 400 summits overall compared to Everest's 7500 summits so just remarkably how much harder K2 is every season that presents itself.

K2 (Urdu: کے ٹو ), also known as Mount Godwin-Austen or Chhogori (Balti and Urdu: چھوغوری),is the second highest mountain in the world, after Mount Everest, at 8,611 metres (28,251 ft) above sea level. It is located on the China-Pakistan border between Baltistan, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China. K2 is the highest point of the Karakoram range and the highest point in both Pakistan and Xinjiang.
K2 is known as the Savage Mountain due to the extreme difficulty of ascent. It has the second-highest fatality rate among the eight thousanders. With around 300 successful summits and 77 fatalities, about one person dies on the mountain for every four who summit.It is more difficult and hazardous to reach the peak of K2 from the Chinese side, so it is usually climbed from the Pakistani side. Unlike Annapurna, the mountain with the highest fatality-to-summit rate (191 summits and 61 fatalities), or the other eight thousanders, K2 has never been climbed during winter. "Wikipedia"

Starring Ji Chang Wook and Song Yoon Ah
Ji Chang Wook (Healer, Warrior Baek Dong Soo) and Song Yoon Ah (Assembly) star in a political drama that shows you really shouldn’t mess with somebody’s present when they can royally wreck your future. Kim Je Ha (Ji Chang Wook) is a former secret service agent, unquestionably patriotic yet abandoned by his colleagues. An elite soldier, Kim Je Ha is also tremendously athletic, armed with martial arts skills and ice-cool nerves known to few. He gets hired as a bodyguard by Choi Yoo Jin (Song Yoon Ah), the premier First Lady candidate and the daughter of a chaebol family. Behind Choi Yoo Jin’s kind and friendly demeanor, though, lies a woman with deep ambition and a ruthless willingness to pursue it at all costs. Amidst his struggles and her ambitions, there is also Go An Na (The Prime Minister and I star and SNSD member Im Yoon Ah), the reclusive and hidden daughter of the presidential hopeful who, due to a childhood trauma, is unable to communicate with the world and only sees love as a tool for revenge. So when she and Kim Je Ha, both abandoned souls slowly growing closer, decide to enact vengeance upon the people who wronged them, can they put their own traumas aside and focus, or will their emotional scars cause them to fail in their quest for retribution? Adding to the drama are Jang Se Joon (Neighborhood Hero alum Jo Sung Ha), the presidential candidate, Park Gwan Soo (Mirror of the Witch actor Kim Gab Soo), his morally questionable rival, and Kim Dong Mi (She Was Pretty star Shin Dong Mi), the steely and cold right-hand woman and chief secretary of the First Lady hopeful.
Also known simply as “K2,” is the latest project by director Kwak Jung Hwan (Basketball, Chuno), who once again returns to the familiar subject matter of secret agents that he explored in Neighborhood Hero. It is written by Jang Hyeok Rin, who fans will recognize for the screenplay of Yong Pal. The first script reading for the series took place in August 2016 at the CJ E&M;; Center in Seoul, back when Im Yoon Ah was not attached to the project, and filming commenced soon after in Spain. The first episode of The K2 will air on September 23, 2016, with subsequent episodes airing every Friday and Saturday on tvN at the 8:00PM time slot, and an expected conclusion airing some time in December 2016.
The extended cast for The K2 includes Ji Chang Wook as Kim Je Ha, Song Yoon Ah as Choi Yoo Jin, Im Yoon Ah as Go An Na, Lee Jung Jin as Choi Sung Won, Jo Sung Ha as Jang Se Joon, Kim Gab Soo as Park Gwan Soo, Shin Dong Mi as Kim Dong Mi and Son Tae Young as An Na's mother.

Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner
Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner (born 13 December 1970) is an Austrian mountaineer. In August 2011, she became the second woman to climb the fourteen eight-thousanders, and the first woman to do so without the use of supplementary oxygen or high altitude porters.
Mountaineering
Her interest in mountain climbing developed at a young age, and by the age of 13 she had completed climbing tours at the local Sturzhahn. As she pursued her nursing training in Vienna, Austria, she continued to hone her skills by participating in numerous ski, ice- and rock-climbing tours. At the age of 32, Gerlinde climbed her fourth 8000m peak, Nanga Parbat, and decided to pursue professional mountain climbing full-time.
Eight-thousanders
Together with Edurne Pasaban she is one of only two women who have climbed the fourteen eight-thousanders. Kaltenbrunner climbs without supplemental oxygen, which makes her the first woman to officially reach all fourteen eight-thousanders without the use of supplementary oxygen.Oh Eun-Sun claimed to be the first female mountaineer to summit all fourteen eight-thousanders. However, her claim has been listed as "disputed" due to the controversy surrounding her climb on Kangchenjunga.

King Wen of Zhou
King Wen of Zhou (Chinese: 周文王; pinyin: Zhōu Wén Wáng; 1152 – 1056 BC) was king of Zhou during the late Shang dynasty in ancient China. Although it was his son Wu who conquered the Shang following the Battle of Muye, King Wen was honored as the founder of the Zhou dynasty. A large number of the hymns of the Classic of Poetry are praises to the legacy of King Wen. Some consider him the first epic hero of Chinese history.

Biography
Born Ji Chang (姬昌), Wen was the son of Tai Ren and Ji Jili, the king of a small state along the Wei River in present-day Shaanxi. His father was betrayed and executed by the Shang emperor Wen Ding in the late 12th century BC.

The first episode of The K2 will air on September 23, 2016, with subsequent episodes airing every Friday and Saturday on tvN at the 8:00PM time slot, and an expected conclusion airing some time in December 2016. K2 is the highest point of the Karakoram range and the highest point in both Pakistan and Xinjiang. The mountain was first surveyed by a European survey team in 1856. Team member Thomas Montgomerie designated the mountain "K2" for being the second peak of the Karakoram range. The other peaks were originally named K1, K3, K4, and K5, but were eventually renamed Masherbrum, Gasherbrum IV, Gasherbrum II, and Gasherbrum I, respectively. In 1892, Martin Conway led a British expedition that reached "Concordia" on the Baltoro Glacier. On 1 August 2008, a group of climbers went missing after a large piece of ice fell during an avalanche, taking out the fixed ropes on part of the route; four climbers were rescued, but 11, including Ger McDonnell, the first Irish person to reach the summit, were confirmed dead. On 6 August 2010, Fredrik Ericsson, who intended to ski from the summit, joined Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner on the way to the summit of K2. Ericsson fell 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) and was killed. Kaltenbrunner aborted her summit attempt. Despite several attempts, nobody reached the summit. -

The expedition paid a high prize, their beloved team member Ger McDonnell lost his life after trying to save other climbers life! -

The 2008 K2 disaster occurred on 1 August 2008, when eleven mountaineers from international expeditions died on K2, the second-highest mountain on Earth. Three others were seriously injured. The series of deaths, over the course of the Friday ascent and Saturday descent, was the worst single accident in the history of K2 mountaineering. Some of the specific details remain uncertain, with different plausible scenarios for timing and actions by different climbers when reported later in eyewitness accounts from survivors or from radio communications of climbers who died later (sometimes minutes later) in the course of events on K2 that day.

The series of deaths, over the course of the Friday ascent and Saturday descent, was the worst single accident in the history of K2 mountaineering. Some of the specific details remain uncertain, with different plausible scenarios for timing and actions by different climbers when reported later in eyewitness accounts from survivors or from radio communications of climbers who died later (sometimes minutes later) in the course of events on K2 that day.

Vanessa O'Brien is an expert mountaineer. She is the fastest woman to climb the highest peak on every continent and the first American and British woman to climb K2, the second-highest mountain in the world.
Here, we talk with her about why Mt. Everest isn't the hardest mountain in the world to climb, and why so fewer who attempt K2 ever make it to the top. You can learn more about O'Brien's adventures by following her on Facebook and Twitter. Following is a transcript of the video.
So when comparing Everest versus K2, they are very, very different.
First, you have two different countries. You have Nepal versus Pakistan so I'd say technically it's more challenging to get to Pakistan to get the visas, the logistics.
You've got different tracks in, so the track into Pakistan to get to K2 base camp involves traveling over a glacier. A glacier is harder to climb, you've got mixed rock, which makes twisting an ankle very, very easy.
When you're going up to Everest Base Camp, you're just on a dirt trail so it's very, very easy.
Also, when you're traveling on K2, you're packing your whole expedition and you're building tents along the way, when you're traveling to Everest Base Camp, you're staying at teahouses so you don't have to travel in tents.
When you're on the actual climb, K2 is shaped like a triangle so it's demanding 110% day one, whereas Everest, there's twists and turns, so it's not always climbing steep.
Weather is much more unpredictable on K2 and I would say the technical climbing on K2 is hard so Everest has the Hillary step, which everyone's heard about, that's one obstacle. But for the most part it's pretty — the paths are well laid-out because a lot of people climb Everest every year where K2, there is very few expeditions that climb because there's such an unpredictability of summits.
And it's more technical so, it's more of a mixed rock, ice, and alpine climb so you have places like House's Chimney and Black Pyramid, which are hard rock climbs in the middle of an alpine climb. So very, very different.
If I look statistically, there's a 40% chance of no summits in any one year so this is a really tough mountain. There's less than 400 summits overall compared to Everest's 7500 summits so just remarkably how much harder K2 is every season that presents itself.

Starring Ji Chang Wook and Song Yoon Ah
Ji Chang Wook (Healer, Warrior Baek Dong Soo) and Song Yoon Ah (Assembly) star in a political drama that shows you really shouldn’t mess with somebody’s present when they can royally wreck your future. Ji Chang Wook (Healer, Warrior Baek Dong Soo) and Song Yoon Ah (Assembly) star in a political drama that shows you really shouldn’t mess with somebody’s present when they can royally wreck your future. K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen or Chhogori ( چھوغوری),is the second highest mountain in the world, after Mount Everest, at 8,611 metres (28,251 ft) above sea level. It is located on the China-Pakistan border between Baltistan, in the Gilgit–Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China. K2 is the highest point of the Karakoram range and the highest point in both Pakistan and Xinjiang.
The mountain was first surveyed by a European survey team in 1856. Team member Thomas Montgomerie designated the mountain "K2" for being the second peak of the Karakoram range. The other peaks were originally named K1, K3, K4, and K5, but were eventually renamed Masherbrum, Gasherbrum IV, Gasherbrum II, and Gasherbrum I, respectively. In 1892, Martin Conway led a British expedition that reached "Concordia" on the Baltoro Glacier.
On 1 August 2008, a group of climbers went missing after a large piece of ice fell during an avalanche, taking out the fixed ropes on part of the route; four climbers were rescued, but 11, including Ger McDonnell, the first Irish person to reach the summit, were confirmed dead.
On 6 August 2010, Fredrik Ericsson, who intended to ski from the summit, joined Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner on the way to the summit of K2. Ericsson fell 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) and was killed. Kaltenbrunner aborted her summit attempt.
Despite several attempts, nobody reached the summit.
