"Men of Distinction"

No music posted here.  I just thought I’d help spread the word about this new (very old) release on Garage D’or Records.  It’s out in a couple of weeks, so go get it!!!  Those that frequent this blog know that i don’t knowingly post stuff that is readily available, so even if tis were to get posted somewhere on the interwebs, I won’t link to it….you’ll need to buy this one.

Garage D’or is proud to return after a year long absence. Our new release is L7-3, MEN OF DISTINCTION. This band was the direct descendent of the Suicide Commandos, featuring Dave Ahl, Chris Osgood and new member Steve Fjelstad on bass. The album was recorded late in 1980 and early 1981 at the legendary Blackberry Way Studio in south Minneapolis. Produced by Fjelstad who was soon to produce both the Replacements and Husker Du. L7-3 were a more complex and brainy version of the Commandos with a twist. Lots of vocals and layered guitars with a unique approach to songwriting. The album contains 18 songs, all available here for the first time ever and lovingly re-mixed for this package by Terry Katzman and Tom Herbers. Here is a lengthy glimpse of a classic Minneapolis band who predated the college rock sound by a good two years. Lots of exciting notes, data and song lyrics.

Minnesota’s first punk band, with what I believe to be the first release on the label soon to be knows as TwinTone. If you don’t know of the Commandos, then you haven’t been paying attention. A lot of people credit Husker Du and the Replacements with being some of the earliest punk bands, but they were still in Jr. High when there guys started rocking it. Must own for anyone that likes 70’s punk. Must own for any punk-rocker Minnesotan that wants to know where it all started.

Make a Record
What can I say about the band largely credited with starting the whole MN Punk scene? Released in 1978 on Blank Records, these guys were the godfathers of MN Punk. Just a short list of bands that were influenced by them: Husker Du, Replacements, & Soul Asylum. Um, those bands, and their contemporaries pretty much laid the groundwork for everyone else that followed.
The album has been re-released on CD by (I believe) Garage D’or Records . You need to buy it!

Burn it Down

The Burn it down video!  Suicide Commandos were probably the earliest MN Punk band.    I can honestly say that I love just about everything they’ve recorded.  My most recent favorite is the Live CD from Sound 80 that aired on KQRS a million years ago.  I honestly just don’t  see ol’ KQ92 taking a chance on the Commandos, but it’s a great recording.  It was released to go along with the reunion show they did at the MN State Fair a couple years back (when Joan Jett dropped off the bill making the show FREE!).
