Mr. Pawan Chamling began his career by choosing the independent profession of a farmer and later became a first class contractor. Thereafter, he was actively involved in the service of society and literature apart from engaging himself in various creative activities by consolidating the traditional relationship of rural organizations and institutions. He also initiated the process of creating awareness among the village populance by establishing libraries and cooperative societies besides mobilizing his youth friends in organizing drama and other cultural activities.
Mr. Chamling was continuously engaged in political activities since the year 1973 and was actively involved in people's revolution of 1973. Sikkim Prajatantra Congress was the first political party in which Mr. Chamling made his entry. In addition to his association with this political party and its activities, he was also actively engaged in pursuit of social, cultural and literary activities. As a result, the editing and publication of the literary magazine "NIRMAN" started in 1977 from Yangyang, a very backward village of Sikkim which also happens to be the birth place of Mr. Chamling. Later on, a publication unit under the name of Nirman Prakashan started publishing the literary magazine "NIRMAN" for the last 19 years. It may be mentioned here that the Nirman Publication has so far published 100 books by 55 numbers of fresh as well as well-known writers.

During the decade of 1980s Mr. Chamling was actively involved in social and literary activities along with the political activities.
In 1982 he was elected uncontested as President of Yangyang Gram Panchayat.
In 1985 elected as Member of Sikkim Legislative Assembly.
In 1989 he returned to the Fourth Legislative Assembly from Damthang Constituency securing 96% of votes and was inducted into the Cabinet and was Minister for Industeries, Printing and Information & Public Relations of Government of Sikkim from 1989 to 1992.
On 4th March, 1993 SIKKIM DEMOCRATIC FRONT was formed with the commitment to uphold democracy, justice and liberty. Unanimously elected as the President of the party.
On 9th September, 1992 Mr. Chamling created a sensation in the SIKKIM LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY by searching for democracy with a lighted candle as a protest against the autocratic Government.
He went underground from June 19 to September 22 in 1993 and conducted political activities from there.
In 1994 Sikkim Democratic Front won the Assembly Election and secured majority in the Assembly. Elected as the leader of the Sikkim Democratic Front Legislative party and then the Chief Minister.
He is also the president of the Sikkim Handicapped persons Welfare Mission

CHINTAN PURASKAR (Awarded by Sikkim Sahitya Parishad in 1987 for the best Poem).
BHARAT SHIROMANI (Presented by the Vice-President of India for National integration and preservation of democracy in the State).
His social and philanthropic works include donation of sites for schools and agriculture lands to landless peasants. The program for constructing homes has also been started.
It is during his present tenure as chief Minister that the State Government has kept aside 70% of the total Plan Outlay for the development of the rural areas of the state and other poverty alleviation programs. As a part of SDF Governments commitment to uplift the poor and downtrodden of the state wages of daily labourers have been increased by 100 per cent. To encourage family planning and provide adequate social security to women, a scheme under the style of Planned Family Scheme is being launched by the year 2007 exclusively for women. His Government has also kept 50 % job reservation for the women and 3% for handicapped persons.
All the students upto Class - V are being provided with free uniforms while textbook and exercise books and supplied free of cost at all levels. Education is free up to College level.
His basic motto in politics is that labour should not be deprived of its reward.
Mr. Chamlings historic endeavor to ensure that Sikkim's integration into the mainstream of national life is nurtured with sensitivity, thus paving the way for the emotional integration as well with the rest of the country is praised by one and all and for which he has also received the most coveted award BHARAT SHIROMANI. He is out and out a nationalist with a great source of responsibility towards the nation.
