People who are fleeing for their lives aren't making a "choice" based on "incentives." Your constituents are confused about economic migrants vs. refugees. Educate them on the numbers. The vast, vast majority are no threat to anyone.

The ‘choice’ comes into play with how they seek asylum: through an established legal process or, by illegally crossing our border — at which point we can’t easily determine their motives, can we?
-
Explain the legal process for requesting asylum. Hint: you can't start it from your home country.
-
While you're at it, consider if you really want "enforcing the rule of law" on misdemeanors to become "prosecuting to the fullest extent possible" every incidence of violation. Unless you want people's cars towed for changing lanes without signaling.
-
If you've ever been pulled over for a busted tail light and gotten off with only a warning, you've experienced the perfectly reasonable discretion law enforcement can exercise. I appreciate that at this moment licking the boot sounds so very good. Careful not to be too eager.
-
If just a year ago someone had tried to convince me this is a reasonable, proportionate response, that everyone should expect to have their kids taken & scattered all over the continent over misdemeanors, I would've told them they were crazy & what country do they think this is?
-
It's not exceptional. Not anywhere near. I'll leave it at that.
-
Ok. So, catch and release doesn’t work. We can’t legally keep them together (much less safely.) what do you recommend we do?

Policies aren't incentivizing migrants coming to America. The violence of the drug cartels, paramilitary groups and government despotism in south and Central America is incentivizing them to come here. They aren't coming for a vacation, they're coming for safety and asylum.
-
Exactly. The drug companies overprescribing opioids has lead to the heroin crisis that continues to enrich the drug cartels who buy guns from the US hat they use to terrorize these people. It’s a vicious circle. And the GOP doesn’t want to do a damn thing to stop it.
-
What could the GOP be doing to help pull this vicious circle out of its loop?
-
Well, one thing they could do is fully fund USAID that works in Central America to improve the conditions there. They could force the drug companies to take responsibility for the opioid crisis. They could close the gun background check loopholes. Just to name a few.
-
They could establish a functional migrant worker program to allow people from Mexico and Central America to come here to work.
-
I'm actually really on board with this idea. I've no problem with anyone who wants to come to the states to work and even receive an education, as this is something all parties could benefit from.
-
Basic policy understanding can solve our problems in a way that benefits both sides, but these issues are infinitely complex. Next time you hear someone with an elevator pitch on how to solve solve immigration with one simple idea just remember they are probably wrong.

You can start by not BLOCKING PORT OF ENTRYS forcing them to come ILLEGALLY TO SEEK ASYLUM!!!!!
-
I’m quoting republicans. They are saying it’s illegal to cross the border seeking asylum. Not admitting that they’re blocking the port of entries.
-
Where is your proof, you throw these things out there without and documentary evidence.
-
Several NGOs have been observing instances of this, as have members of Congress. It isn't as though it hasn't been reported. This article from Minnesota Public Radio includes an audio clip of a CBP agent giving false info and refusing to accept a claim.https://www.mprnews.org/story/2017/07/27/npr-advocates-say-agents-are-unlawfully-turning-away-asylum-seekers-at-the-border …

We all know the problem - tell us your solution - also what's your plan to reunite the children with their families.
-
Excellent questions. Mr. Senator, I am interested in your answer. Please respond. Publicly.
-
If people want to stay together with their children they need to enter via a legal port of entry not illegally crossing rivers and crawling thru tunnels at night. I love how all of you are more informed about drug cartels than the US immigration system.
