SXSW Interactive Podcast Features: 90 Days with the Phoenix Mars Mission

Andrew Kessler speaking at SXSW 2011 by Alberto JimenezThis is a talk about winning the nerd lottery: The luckiest fanboy in fandom (Andrew Kessler) got a shot to spend three months with unfettered access to mission control—that’s a journalistic first and potential NASA no-no. It’s just your average summer trying to capture the story of 130 of the world’s best planetary scientists exploring the north pole of Mars. 3, 2, 1, Twitter: The NASA Tweetup Shuttle Discovery Launch

How does one get invited to a NASA shuttle launch? Through Twitter, of course! Last fall, 150 Twitter users were selected to attend NASA's STS-133 Discovery shuttle launch, which included special access to the press site, two days of programmed events and a place to view the launch from the countdown clock. Those selected formed an instant community (within hours of being selected) via Twitter, Google groups, Facebook groups and email lists.

Their first night in Orlando they gathered and formed a space tweeps family: astronomers, scientists, NASA workers, digital storytellers, educators and videographers. Listen to the video highlight above to hear members of this group tell the remarkable story of how they used social media to share, teach, grow, explore and inspire.

Rebooting Iceland: Crowdsourcing Innovation in Uncertain Times

In this video highlight reel, Icelandic representatives from the gaming, home entertainment and app development industries and a representative of the Best Party, discuss how Iceland pulled itself up by its bootstraps after the collapse of their banking system, using the methodology of the wisdom of crowds to capture the heartbeat of the their nation's creativity.

In 2009, a loosely-organized group calling themselves the Anthill, wondered "What is the vision of this nation?" and convened a “National Assembly” of 1,500 citizens to formulate a coherent set of values, vision and ideas for Iceland's future. Iceland's politicians took notice and responded by holding a second National Assembly in 2010 as a preparatory step in the development of a new national constitution! Watch the video above to see how these citizens are rapidly prototyping new forms of democracy using the web and open innovation.

SXSW Interactive Podcast Features: The Connected Car

Photo of Jessica Steel at SXSW 2011 by Laura FordeThis podcast feature, sponsored by Chevy, focuses on connectivity – or “telemetric” in the auto industry – keeping you connected while behind the wheel. Mostly the auto industry is focused on developing systems for infotainment and personal connectivity through Bluetooth. While that’s cool stuff that makes the driving experience more fun and helps us stay connected on the road, this panel pushes for a much broader approach. Your vehicle can be more than a smartphone on wheels – it can be a platform for data collection and sharing. Embedded technology, like OnStar, can transform your car into an intelligent “intent engine” that processes the cloud, and enables the cloud to work for you. What’s next for wireless communication, video conference and social interaction? How can these converge in a vehicle? How does OnStar leverage Verizon, Skype and Facebook to work in ways never thought possible?
