The Independent is looking to add a senior night editor to its team to focus on both The Independent Daily Edition app (the paid-for ‘virtual’ newspaper) and website.

We now have more paying subscribers than the newspaper, and the app edition is the most print-like product we produce. Hence we are looking for candidates with good experience of putting pages together for print – working on a running order, improving headlines, ensuring images work together, etc. The right candidate will also be able to demonstrate they have the sill to shape a great front page, from writing a splash headline to presenting the puffs for the best writing in the edition.

On the web side of the operation – which is deeply linked to the app edition – the role will mainly be ensuring coverage of breaking news, overseeing the team in London, and liaising with the handover to our New York office.

The hours will be negotiated through the process of recruitment but are likely to be approximately 5pm-1am. Duty-editing to improve our seven-day operations will be an advantage. This is very much a chance to join the senior editing team of a fast-growing, mould-breaking, high-quality news publisher with great brand heritage and values.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • At least two years of working on a print title
  • Proven track record for writing headlines and selecting images
  • A strong understanding of what makes a great splash
  • Experience of a busy, prominent news or production desk
  • A broad appreciation for all sections of a paper – from news to features, obituaries to sport
  • Clear communication style
  • Team player
  • A strong news industry professional
  • Ability to inspire a team and develop team-members’ skills and careers in order to collectively achieve business goals

To apply, please send an up to date CV along with a full covering letter with salary expectation, and notice period to esirecruitment@esimedia.co.uk.   Closing date is Friday 23rd February 2018
