Ricardo Requejo, Piano
Manuel de Falla's early musical training centered primarily around the piano. He graduated from the Madrid Conservatory as a student of José Tragó, won a piano competition (against a number of pianists of international stature) in 1905, performed in chamber ensembles, gave recitals, made recordings of his own compositions, and, most importantly, conceived all of his compositions at the piano, the instrument which played such an important role in the orchestration of his two ballets.
De Falla's early compositional interests tended toward late Romantic salon music, and his nationalistic intentions became very clear in his following works. His late works are often very demanding -- the Fantasía Baetica, for example, is without a doubt the most ambitious work that de Falla wrote for solo piano and one of the greatest works in all of Spanish piano music. Ricardo Requejo, one of the foremost teachers and interpreters of Spanish music, has recorded his complete works for solo piano.

Manuel de Falla
Manuel de Falla y Matheu (23 November 1876 – 14 November 1946) was a Spanish composer. With Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados he is one of Spain's most important musicians of the first half of the 20th century. His image was on Spain's 1970 100-pesetas banknote.
Biography
Falla was born Manuel María de los Dolores Falla y Matheu in Cádiz. He was the son of José María Falla, a Valencian, and María Jesús Matheu, from Catalonia (Hess 2001a).
In 1889 he continued his piano lessons with Alejandro Odero and learned the techniques of harmony and counterpoint from Enrique Broca. At age 15 he became interested in literature and journalism and founded the literary magazines El Burlón and El Cascabel.
Madrid
By 1900 he was living with his family in the capital, where he attended the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación. He studied piano with José Tragó, a colleague of Isaac Albéniz and composition with Felipe Pedrell. In 1897 he composed Melodia for cello and piano and dedicated it to Salvador Viniegra, who hosted evenings of chamber music that Falla attended. In 1899, by unanimous vote, he was awarded the first prize at the piano competition at his school of music. He premiered his first works: Romanza para violonchelo y piano, Nocturno para piano, Melodía para violonchelo y piano, Serenata andaluza para violín y piano, and Cuarteto en Sol y Mireya. That same year he started to use de with his first surname, making Manuel de Falla the name he became known as from that time on. When only the surname is used, however, the de is omitted.

El amor brujo
El amor brujo (Love, the Magician, literally, Spell-bound Love or The Bewitched Love, sometimes translated as Wedded by Witchcraft) is a ballet composed in 1914-1915 by Manuel de Falla to a libretto by Gregorio Martínez Sierra. In 1916, Falla arranged a rendition of the work for sextet and small orchestra and the following year he made a concert version, also for small orchestra. Later, he fashioned a piano suite from it and finally, a second ballet version (1925) that features expanded orchestration, elimination of the narration, small cuts and plot changes, and a different order to the numbers.
The work is distinctively Andalusian in character with the songs in the Andalusian Spanish dialect of the Gypsies. The music contains moments of remarkable beauty and originality; it includes the celebrated "Danza ritual del fuego" (Ritual Fire Dance), "Canción del fuego fatuo" (Song of Wildfire, or Song Of The Will-o'-the-Wisp) and the "Danza del terror" (Dance of Terror).

Ricardo Requejo, Piano
Manuel de Falla's early musical training centered primarily around the piano. He graduated from the Madrid Conservatory as a student of José Tragó, won a piano competition (against a number of pianists of international stature) in 1905, performed in chamber ensembles, gave recitals, made recordings of his own compositions, and, most importantly, conceived all of his compositions at the piano, the instrument which played such an important role in the orchestration of his two ballets.
De Falla's early compositional interests tended toward late Romantic salon music, and his nationalistic intentions became very clear in his following works. His late works are often very demanding -- the Fantasía Baetica, for example, is without a doubt the most ambitious work that de Falla wrote for solo piano and one of the greatest works in all of Spanish piano music. Ricardo Requejo, one of the foremost teachers and interpreters of Spanish music, has recorded his complete works for solo piano.

Ricardo Requejo, Piano
Manuel de Falla's early musical training centered primarily around the piano. He graduated from the Madrid Conservatory as a student of José Tragó, won a piano competition (against a number of pianists of international stature) in 1905, performed in chamber ensembles, gave recitals, made recordings of his own compositions, and, most importantly, conceived all of his compositions at the piano, the instrument which played such an important role in the orchestration of his two ballets.
De Falla's early compositional interests tended toward late Romantic salon music, and his nationalistic intentions became very clear in his following works. His late works are often very demanding -- the Fantasía Baetica, for example, is without a doubt the most ambitious work that de Falla wrote for solo piano and one of the greatest works in all of Spanish piano music. Ricardo Requejo, one of the foremost teachers and interpreters of Spanish music, has recorded his complete works for solo piano.

As with many things in Spain it's a traditional religious festival, but really it's about community spirit and creativity. Located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world, with a vertical drop of more than 165 feet (50 m). Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, as measured by vertical height and also by flow rate. When I first went to Valencia in 2009 I just so happened to be there at the right time for Fallas, and I've wanted to go again ever since so I'm pleased I got to this year in 2015! There's a competition for the best one, and on the last night of Fallas every Falla except the winning one is stuffed with fireworks and burned in something called la crema! There are also fireworks displays and macletas (sound fireworks) throughout the weeks and it's basically just awesome. here's some links to read more about it:

When I first went to Valencia in 2009 I just so happened to be there at the right time for Fallas, and I've wanted to go again ever since so I'm pleased I got to this year in 2015! As with many things in Spain it's a traditional religious festival, but really it's about community spirit and creativity. (EDIT: thanks to a lovely commenter for letting me know that wikipedia is wrong, its not a religious festival, it just has religious elements) Each little community creates a Falla (giant sculpture made from wood+ papier-mache) that is often a satirical commentary or something relevant to the community. There's a competition for the best one, and on the last night of Fallas every Falla except the winning one is stuffed with fireworks and burned in something called la crema! There are also fireworks displays and macletas (sound fireworks) throughout the weeks and it's basically just awesome. here's some links to read more about it:
