The Brahmaputra Mail is a daily train which connects Delhi with Dibrugarh (an important town in upper Assam). Originally this train ran between Old Delhi railway station and Guwahati and was named as Assam Mail and also Tinsukia Mail (Since it connected to Tinsukia via MG section that ran between Guwahati and Tinsukia). Later it was renamed as Brahmaputra Mail after the river since it is one of the most important river for the state and one of amongst top 20 large river in the world. After successful gauge conversion between Guwahati-Lumding-Dibrugarh , was extended to Dibrugarh.This train belongs to Northern Railway (NR) zone of Indian Railway and operated and maintained by Delhi Division (DLI Division) of NR. The train is numbered as 14055/14056.

14055 departs Dibrugarh Town(DBRT) every day at 22:45 and arrives at Old Delhi(DLI) railway station at 5:55 on the fourth day from departure(e.g.:the train which departs Dibrugarh on Thursday at 22:45 would arrive at Delhi on Sunday at 5:55) covering a distance of 2592 km in 55 hrs and 10 mins with an average moving speed of 52 km/h. The train covers important stations like New Tinsukia, Duliajan, Simalguri Jn(Sibsagar/Nazira), Mariani Jn(Jorhat), Furkating Jn(Golaghat), Dimapur, Diphu, Lumding Jn, Guwahati, New Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, New Alipurduar, New Coochbehar, New Jalpaiguri, Kishengunj, Malda Town, Bhagalpur, Patna, Buxar, Mughal Sarai(MGS), Allahabad, Kanpur, Tundla, Aligarh, Ghaziabad en-route to Old Delhi. It has an extended and important halt at Guwahati arriving at 11:30 on second day.

4056 departs Old Delhi every day at 23:30 and reaches Dibrugarh at 4:00 on the fourth day (e.g.: the train departing DLI at 23:30 on Thursday would reach DBRT on Sunday early morning at 4:00) covering a total distance of 2592 km in 52 hrs and 30 mins with an average moving speed of 55 km/h. The train covers important stations such as Aligarh, Tundla, Kanpur, Allahabad, Mughal Sarai, Buxar, Patna, Bhagalpur, Malda Town, Kishengunj, New Jalpaiguri, New Coochbehar, New Alipurduar, Kokrajhar, New Bongaigaon, Guwahati, Lumding Jn, Diphu, Dimapur, Furkating Jn(Golaghat), Mariani Jn(Jorhat), Simalguri Jn(Sibsagar/Nazira), Duliajan, New Tinsukia en-route Dibrugarh Town.

The train has both AC and Non AC class of accommodation. The composition of this train is 2A - 1, 3A - 3, SL - 11, PC - 1, GENL - 5, SLR - 2. Both 14055/14056 runs under diesel as well as electric loco.

From DLI-MGS and MGS-DLI the train usually runs with a WAP-7 class of Locomotive(electric) from Electric Loco Shed Ghaziabad. Occasionally a WAP-5 from Ghaziabad shed can also be seen. Sometimes this train is sighted with a WAP-4 class of Electric Locomotive belonging to Mugal Sarai/Kanpur/Ghaziabad can also be seen though WAP-7(GZB) is the standard link.

From MGS-DBRT and DBRT-MGS the train is usually hauled by WDP-4 class of locomotive from Diesel Loco Shed of Silliguri(under NF Railway). Sometimes can also be sighted with a WDM-3A class of locomotive from Diesel Loco Shed of Malda Town.

This is one of the oldest running train of this zone. This train is famous for its defense personal using this train for travel.

This train was also involved in two the major railway disasters in Indian History. One was the mail bombing of the train between Kokrajhar and New Bongaigaon in December 1996 by bodo militants an second was the Gaisal Rail Disaster, a head on collision between Avadh Assam Express and Brahmaputra Mail.
