DJ JON TUPAZ

One of the hottest DJs here in MANILA today is DJ JON TUPAZ who has a weekly music mix show on MAGIC 89.9 WTM entitled "THE 12" MIX by DJ JON TUPAZ" every Fridays from 9pm to 12mn. YUP!! I am lucky and honored to feature this Legendary DJ and head of one of MANILA's LEGENDARY MOBILE "PSYCHODECO" here on my little blog "The Doctor Is In". This is an exclusive blogpost about this ICON BEARER for Magic 89.9’s FRIDAY MAGIC MADNESS PARTY SERIES. Btw, I'll also be featuring "PSYCHODECO" in the future here in my blog so just stay tune okay. In 2004, 99.5RT gave him his own program which is CLUB 24K from 12:00nn to 1:00PM EVERY FRIDAYS and this was before sister station Magic 89.9 got him on the DJ rosters. Jonathan V. Tupaz aka. "DJ JON TUPAZ" started wayback 1986 as a Disc Jockey at HOTEL MIRADOR and from 1987-1989 he became the Head DJ of GUEZZ DISCO in Clarkfield, Pampanga. This lead onwards to being pirated to FACES Disco in Makati City as Head DJ at the height of the disco scene then from 1989 to its closure in 1994. He capitalized on his vast knowledge in music along with his personal collection of around 2000 pcs (and counting) of rare VINYL RECORDS ranging from New Wave , Jazz, 80's and early 90's disco. He also got into Ballroom Music Operations where he started a new trend in modern ballroom dancing then came latin, salsa, rumba, foxtrot, samba reggae etc. Wheew!! That's a music enthusiast indeed!! Well, I wanna THANK Miss Peachy Tupaz, wife of DJ Jon, for helping me out regarding the informations I'm giving you right now guys. THANKS Mam!!

DJ Jon Tupaz was the consistent 3 year undisputed champion in the art of mixing and scratching techniques DWTM 89.9 “Magic Mixes Battle of the Djs” which was held at the Araneta Coliseum, ULTRA, and Heartbeat Disco. Even DEAN ANREW of Manila Legendary New Wave Mobile EYEBALL DUB has given him high praises too. Definitely, these guys really know their stuffs. No "Wannabe DJ" thing I may say. He He He!! Having around 15 DJs under his wing personally trained by him, He had clients such as CLUB IBIZA in Bel Air, IN THE MOOD Malate and Galleria, THE SPIN (Kudos) at Makati Cinema Square, DAD'S Alabang, LA JOTA PATIO DE BAILE Greenhills to name a few. Hmmmp!! That's not few if you ask me. Well, but in the midst of ballroom, came TIPSY's Bar in Mile Long where he was able to spin his NEW WAVE COLLECTION to make the people travel back in time re-living the Corinthians Party Days. Wheew!! That's MEMORIES INDEED!! I, myself was able to attend twice back on those days and personally that was a helluvah NEW WAVE EXPERIENCE back then.

As the era of ballroom starting to fade, He still gets to play 80s music in special events, corporate parties ,and launchings using the Classic Vinyl Records which he specializes in. Until came such a time wherein that there was a venue that gave a special following for 80's classic disco and new wave music ---- that is PONANA in Libis Q.C in the year 2000. Then followed the stints/ regular gigs at PIER1 (Libis ,The fort, Morato, Roxas Blvd, Ortigas Home Depot) SHIRAZZ Salcedo Village, TEMPLE BAR Greenbelt.

In 1994, with his vast collection of music in different genres paved the way for him to come out with a series of CD collection. DJ Jon Tupaz also has come out with HIS OWN REMIXES in VINYL RECORD named "DANCE TRAXX" with a limited copy release for DJs only commercially in the U.S and in The Philippines. We will be featuring that "DANCE TRAXX" Vinyl compilation in the future which he made during those times. I think that's something to look forward to again guys. DJ Jon Tupaz' reputation and talent has preceded him and opened up for the concerts of MC Hammer, Kalapana, Mike Francis back in the 80’s, Sybil - in the 90s and Rick Astley in Manila in 2008 produced by DMC Philippines. Well, that's DJ JON TUPAZ....exclusively exposed here on "The Doctor Is In". He He He!!

Here's a NEW WAVE MIX from the archives of DJ Jon Tupaz which he made several years ago which was given to me by JON two months ago to be shared here in my blog. YUP!! Another PINOY NEW WAVE MIX here on "The Doctor Is In" which features the ORIGINAL PINOY NEW WAVE MIXES. I didn't make any TRACKLIST so that the MIX would create a little anticipation and surprise for you.

Here's DJ JON's message he gave me regarding this mix:

"No difference actually from the way i used to mix then and now. I dont use computers, effects or anything... im not a techie .... just plain old straight up mix. This mix was done straight from vinyl to recorder...... no practice, no effects,no editing... just straight mixing.... so please bear with me ....... also in this mix is my version of manual and the 80's way of scratching".

“I’m just all about the music. I’m here to share it with other music lovers. That’s just me.”
- DJ JON TUPAZ

MORNING MAN's REQUEST ROUND-UP

"This is the radio that you want. This is the station that dares to be different that I'm sure you definitely know. And we are WXB102....we are greeting out there....". YUP!! Those were the words of LEGENDARY WXB102 DJ RICO GUITERREZ aka. "THE MORNING MAN" or "INGGO" for those who know him personally before greeting me,my brothers, and friends on his Request Round-Up Morning Show back in 1986 which I was able to record it on cassette tape . Well, I have to say "MORNING MAN" is my favorite XB DJ and I remember calling up XB very early just to make my shouts out and requests on his Legendary Morning Show entitled "REQUEST ROUND-UP" so that I'll be hearing the Greetings and the Requested songs just before going to school. He He He!! The technique is that you have to call the station around 5 minutes before 6 a.m. or else the phone line would just clogged up and you may not be able to penetrate the XB line. I was using the Old Traditional Telephone wherein you are dialing in circular motion. He He He!! Hmmmp!! Who would ever thought of during those times that Cellphone would be a hit today!! Nowadays, most of the Radio Stations here in MANILA have already their own TEXT LINE. If the MEN AT WORK Instrumental entitled "ANYONE FOR TENNIS" would play on XB then It means It's the start of "REQUEST ROUND-UP". Wheeew!! That's memories indeed!! I'm very glad to get in touch with Sir Inggo via KABAYAN DJ Clyde's WXB102 Forever Website back in MAY 2006 and It's really cool to know that the show is finally back on air but this time It's on the INTERNET RADIO. If you're a fan of the show then you will always remember Inggo's CHEECH AND CHONG Stingers which he was glad that I was able to share it to him especially "Hey!! what your trying to do? You've ruined my record man, I just bought it".... Funny and creative having those stingers in the morning. He He He!!

There was also this Informative Portion of REQUEST ROUND-UP entitled "NEWS WAVE" wherein Morning Man delivers the latest NEWS and INFOS about NEW WAVE. I made a special blogpost about NEWS WAVE back in DECEMBER 2007 wherein I also featured the Newsletter with same name . Hmmmp!! I can't imagine It's already 2009. Well, he was also glad that I helped him remember this portion of his.

Click the NEWS WAVE cover shared by ALDRIN of HARMONIC TREND to enter my NEWS WAVE Blogpost:

So how did Morning Man became an XB Jock? This is what he answered: "George Frederick and our Station Manager Jesse Gonzales were the cause of it all! Poor me getting sucked into one of the wildest musical rides of my life ...loving it, living it and, after more than a decade and a half, still obsessed by it."

I also informed him that I still remembered that one caller on the show asked him wayback 1987 why WXB102 was called "The Station That Dares To Be Different" and I really like his answer on air which goes like this "We are called The Station That Dares To Be Different because 99% of what you hear on our station, you can't hear on other stations, and 102% of the songs other stations play you can't hear it from us". Hmmmp!! This hit the mark because I was able to tape this too. He He He!!

Inggo had a stint on RK96 better known as 96.3WROCK(LiteRock) in the early 80s together with another Legendary NEW WAVE DJ "THE UNBEATABLE". Of course, PINOY WAVERS would recall "THE UNBEATABLE" because of the hit NEW WAVE radio program back in the 90s on 89DMZ entitled "WAVE 180". Morning Man was a former DJ of Stargazer in Silahis International Hotel and then Soundtrack in Ambassador Hotel during that period when PUNK ROCK and NEW WAVE started to hit the dance scene here in MANILA. . There was also a story that he shared to me regarding Ambassador Hotel at one time the XB phone conked out one-way wherein they could call but they couldn't receive calls. What they did was they routed the Requests & Greetings for Request Round-Up via Ambassador Hotel so that the listeners could call there. They then called up the telephone operator of Ambassador Hotel every 15 minutes and she read out to them what she had gotten. Well, according to the lady operator, it was a quiet morning for her as always until Inggo announced Ambassador Hotel's trunkline (she was tuned in). After that announcement , everything in her switchboard lit up and this went on till afternoon and that was long after the morning show. Wheew!! They never did that again. He He He!! Nice Improvising Sir!! Talking about FANS!! Well, I guess Morning Man's Show would definitely be the highest rated XB Radio Show back then. I also remembered that the Schedule was on Week Days MON-FRI 6am-9am, then few months after It's success, the show was extended to Saturdays.

Here's a photo of MORNING MAN with two Legendary XB DJs namely "THE GHOST" and "SIR GEORGE FREDERICK". "TRES LOS PANCHOS"?

What made WXB102 so unique for MORNING MAN? The music was definitely a prime factor. The line-up of jocks was another consideration for him. What with the likes of Cool Carla, George Frederick, The Ghost, Fat Albert, Julius Ceasar and everyone else around. He feel blessed to have worked with them and being "Underground" also created an ambience like no other for WXB102.

Here's an old WXB102 sticker:

Here's a VINTAGE Photo of WXB102 Booth Circa 80s!!

Btw. I also made a Special blogpost of the recent WXB102 BOOTH Circa '08 back in MARCH, 2008 which MIKE SUTTON requested. MIKEY emailed me a photo of the XB Booth Circa 2008.
Click the XB Booth '08 photo to read my blospost on it:

So how's MORNING MAN doing right now? He his still a jock and still Morning Man on WXB102 Internet Radio. He now work for 107.1 SMOOTH FM, a Jazz Station in Baguio City. Hmmmp!! Interesting SIR!! His program is called "Jazzy Sunrise" and it's on 6-10am and goes by the name "Se簽or Blues" and not “Senior” blues okay. Sir Inggo, Is that something to do with a REQUEST ROUND-UP Favorite from LAIDBACK"Sunshine Reggae"? He He He!!

I made my own DIY "Then and Now" Photo Of MORNING MAN:

Morning Man on the XB BOOTH Circa 1987 and Circa 2007!!

ANY MESSAGE FOR US SIR INGGO?
Morning Man's message:
"Isn't this such a cool thing?!? The spirit truly lives on. The station that dared to be different back then is still alive, kicking and daring the odds again. I must give credit to Mike Sutton for this and, of course, George Frederick and the WXB102 staff.

To all our friends, I hope you can join me in the New Request Roundup every Friday, 6pm (pacific) in the u.s. that’s Saturday, 10am in the Philippines. It’s a 2-hr walk along memory lane and it would be nice to have you along.

and to you, DOC, Thanks for the interview"

SO EVERYONE DO TUNE IN TO MY FRIEND XB DJ MORNING MAN's "REQUEST ROUND-UP" SHOW every Saturdays 10am-12nn MANILA TIME!!

COOL CARLA

Carla Abaya better known as "COOL CARLA" is one of the Legendary WXB102 DJs who fronted the Legendary PINOY Gothic Underground Band IDENTITY CRISIS. After two albums under DYNA RECORDS, IDENTITY CRISIS disbanded in 1991, but COOL CARLA still continued her musical experience in the PINOY ROCK ARENA by forming MARIYA'S MISTRESS in 1993. MARIYA'S MISTRESS only released one album entitled "UNANG PAG-AGOS" in 1995 this time under VICOR RECORDS and disbanded on 1999. Right now, this PINOY ROCK ICON is working as a CHEF and sometimes as DJ on XB INTERNET RADIO owned by MICHAEL SUTTON of SUTTON RECORDS. RIVERMAYA(Another PINOY ROCK ICON) made renditions of two Classic IDENTITY CRISIS songs namely "MY SANCTUARY" and "SUMIGAW UMAWIT KA" on the band's Tribute to PINOY NEW WAVE/PUNK CD entitled"Isang Ugat, Isang Dugo" in English " One Vein, One Blood". A true MUSICIAN!!! That's how Cool "COOL CARLA" is!!

Here are two archived classic articles that featured Cool Carla:

Here's a 1986 Comic Strip on how Cool "Cool Carla" is.

Here's an archive article of "The Best DJ" on "MOVIE FLASH Magazine"
