The Year 2000 problem (also known as the Y2K problem, the Millennium bug, the Y2K bug, or simply Y2K) was a problem for both digital (computer-related) and non-digital documentation and data storage situations that resulted from the practice of truncating a four-digit year to two digits. This made year 2000 indistinguishable from 1900. The former assumption that a twentieth-century date was always understood caused various errors concerning, in particular, the display of dates and the automated ordering of dated records or real-time events.
In 1997, the British Standards Institute (BSI) developed a standard, DISC PD2000-1, which defines "Year 2000 Conformity requirements" as four rules:
2000 (MM) was a century leap year starting on Saturday (dominical letter BA) of the Gregorian calendar, the 2000th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 1000th and last year of the 2nd millennium, the 100th and last year of the 20th century, and the 1st year of the 2000s decade.
2000 was designated as:
Popular culture holds the year 2000 as the first year of the 21st century and the 3rd millennium due to a tendency of grouping the years according to decimal values, as if year zero were counted. According to the Gregorian Calendar, these distinctions fall to the year 2001 because the 1st century was retroactively said to start with year AD 1. Since the calendar does not have year zero, its first millennium spanned from years 1 to 1000 inclusively and its second millennium from years 1001 to 2000 (See more at Millennium).
The year 2000 is sometimes abbreviated as "Y2K" (the "Y" stands for "year", and the "K" stands for "kilo" which means "thousand"). The year 2000 was the subject of Y2K concerns, which are fears that computers would not shift from 1999 to 2000 correctly. However, by the end of 1999, many companies had already converted to new, or upgraded, existing software. Some even obtained Y2K certification. As a result of massive effort, relatively few problems occurred.

A new ‘millenium bug’ could hit computers in January 2038, wipe out computers and programs that rely on outdated internal clocks. The Year 2038 problem affects computers using a 32-bit, or four byte, operating system. The maximum integer value that a 32-bit system can store is 2,147,483,647 before it enters invalid values. As the standard 4-byte format calculates the beginning of time from January 1, 1970, at 12:00:00 a.m., 2,147,483,647 translates to January 19, 2038. After that, a computer’s internal clock would not be able to distinguish between 2038 and the year 1901. The problem can be avoided by upgrading to a 64-bit, or eight byte system. Eight-byte systems can store more than 9 quintillion integer values. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcom...

Wikistrat Chief Analyst Tom Barnett's famous Y2K brief from his time at the U.S. Naval War College. This briefing was taped by USIA for distribution to US embassies around the world in the run-up to the Year 2000 Problem.
It was a hot, muggy evening in 1959 when 14-year-old Steven Truscott gave his schoolmate Lynn Harper a ride on his bicycle near an air force base outside Clinton, Ontario. Two days later, the girl’s body was found in a wooded grove near the town. She had been raped and strangled. After a trial that lasted only 15 days, Truscott was convicted of murder and sentenced to be hanged, becoming Canada’s youngest death-row inmate. His death sentence was commuted, but the schoolboy spent a decade in prison before being paroled in 1969. The case of Steven Truscott was the most famous chid criminal case in Canadian judicial history, but Truscott himself disappeared into an anonymous existence, living under an assumed name and shunning all publicity for three decades. Then, in a 2000 episode of t...
The United States established the Year 2000 Information and Readiness Disclosure Act, which limited the liability of businesses who had properly disclosed their Y2K readiness. Insurance companies sold insurance policies covering failure of businesses due to Y2K problems. Attorneys organized and mobilized for Y2K class action lawsuits (which were not pursued). Survivalist-related businesses (gun dealers, surplus and sporting goods) anticipated increased business in the final months of 1999 in an event known as the Y2K scare.[40] The Long Now Foundation, which (in their words) "seeks to promote 'slower/better' thinking and to foster creativity in the framework of the next 10,000 years", has a policy of anticipating the Year 10,000 problem by writing all years with five digits. For example, t...
Speakers: Sean Donelan, Data Research Associates. This is not another talk detailing "How to prepare for the Year 2000 computer problem." We assume that NANOG attendees know what the problem is, and have already taken steps to address it. This session is about what happens after you think you have fixed your own problems. A failure may still result from something overlooked, or an unexpected combination of factors. In any case, Murphy\'s Law will not expire after December 31, 1999. Because the Internet is a network of networks, in addition to preparing a contingency plan for your own network, you should prepare to maintain your network as part of the Internet. There is potential for numerous, small-scale disruptions across the country which overwhelm normal inter-provider NOC communicati...

Strange thingsare happening but don't be amazed
Be conscious of those devious ways
The type of shit we see everyday
