The author does a fantastic job walking the reader through two of the most transformative post dot com unicorns in modern history. Truly a great read for aspiring entrepreneurs, techies and millennials. The book was well researched and does not hide fact from fiction or speculation, allowing the reader to easily draw his or her own conclusions about the future of the "sharing economy".

Superb journalism with hundreds of deep insights

This book reads like a well-written novel - it's highly engaging and dramatic - while it is based on the highest levels of journalism and reporting, with 99% of its content based on insider accounts. The 1% that the author embellishes is also welcomed from time to time - wise perspectives sometimes very critical of Uber and Airbnb, and at others very admiring. Overall, this is one of those documentations of history that will be forever cherished by outsiders looking to really understand the ins and outs on these startups, and I believe it shows ultimately a very inspiring path forward for bringing cities into a more beautiful and harmonious future.

An excellent must-read for anyone interested in technology, business, leadership, and, of course, Silicon Valley. Brad Stone's narrative is engaging, well-written, clear, and smart. I find his books not only enlightening but also inspiring, and highly enjoyable. A true journalist - his work is always objective and well-thought out from all angles giving you a full perspective (and there are many perspectives on the disruptions of Uber and Airbnb),. Upstarts, in particular, is very topical - I had no idea how fascinating the stories of Uber, Airbnb, and other upstarts could be. I am glad I read it and recommend you do too!

This is an excellent story about new disruptive firms and their inspired and creative leaders. I see Hollywood movie written all over this one. "You are there" as you watch the unfolding of business strategy, key decisions, personalities, the humor and suspense. Like "Amazon: The Everything Store" Brad Stone gets into the most minute details without boring the reader. Absolutely loved this!

Really well written book around two great stories. The author bounces back and forth between both Uber and Airbnb and there are even some points of intersection as well with direct interaction between the companies executives. This is a fantastic fable of two of the hottest internet juggernauts of our time. Enjoyed Brad Stone's detailed account of how the two giants have constantly revolted against conventions and traditional business models to create something novel. Not sure if the new ecosystems created by the two services are as ideal as the founders had envisioned them to be, but sure it is massively interesting to see what they've been through.

After finishing Brad Stone's books on Amazon and Uber, I am curious to see what he thinks of all the turmoil that Uber's been through (with Travis resigning ) and Amazon's foray into traditional retail industry becoming more aggressive than ever. Would love to see an "updated" accounts of the two companies!

Fascinating book that juxtaposes the Uber and AirBnB inception stories, primarily through the lens of their founding teams I'd strongly recommend the book to aspiring entrepreneurs given what it took to get these companies where they are today, yet I'd also recommend the book to anyone as simply two very interesting case studies of two modern brands told in parallel. The vast array of research, sources and personal access that Brad Stone drew upon for this latest project are quite impressive. I read this book on one plane ride - just couldn't put it down.
