Today we're discussing the proper use, care and maintenance of the IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII Reference 3270-01. This is an automatic winding timepiece that can nevertheless be wound from a stop by taking the crown out from its fully screwed in position to the first position. In this position the watch can be wound by turning the crown clockwise. The seconds hand will start to advance and at this point the watch can be worn. It will energize itself in the course of natural kinetic action on the wrist. It's also important to note, that as an automatic winding timepiece, this Mark XVIII cannot be accidentally over wound so wind the watch, if you please, until the full forty-two hour power reserve is energized. Then allow the automatic winding system to take over. When setting the watch, it's important to note two special functions of the movement. The first is the hacking seconds function. By pulling the crown to extremity, a hacking lever stops the balance halting the advance of the seconds, allowing precise synchronization to a known accurate reference time. In the second setting position, the watch also features a quick set date function, such that the date can be rapidly cycled to correct if the watch runs down or encounters an irregular length month. It's important to note, that because the date change mechanism is engaged automatically overnight for an extended period to jump the date disc, the watch should never have its date set manually between the hours of nine P.M. and three A.M. This is the period during which the date change is engaged and manually adjusting the date change during this period can damage the timepiece. It's also important to note, as a matter of water resistance and physical security, always screw the crown down until it is flush with the case to insure that it's safe against abrasion and impact as well as compromise by water and moisture. The timepiece does feature a screwed in case back and a screwed in crown that endow it with six ATM or sixty meter water resistance. Now, IWC explicitly recommends six ATM for water sports or swimming so this watch is safe for submergence during the course of conventional waterborne activity. However, it's important to make several precautions anytime the watch is exposed to water. First, be aware that leather straps, being a porous, natural material, are not water resistant or waterproof in any fashion. They have a tendency to absorb moisture and degrade in an accelerated fashion if exposed.
