Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a given location. Human beings have attempted to predict the weather informally for millennia, and formally since the nineteenth century. Weather forecasts are made by collecting quantitative data about the current state of the atmosphere at a given place and using scientific understanding of atmospheric processes to project how the atmosphere will change.
Once an all-human endeavor based mainly upon changes in barometric pressure, current weather conditions, and sky condition, weather forecasting now relies on computer-based models that take many atmospheric factors into account. Human input is still required to pick the best possible forecast model to base the forecast upon, which involves pattern recognition skills, teleconnections, knowledge of model performance, and knowledge of model biases. The chaotic nature of the atmosphere, the massive computational power required to solve the equations that describe the atmosphere, error involved in measuring the initial conditions, and an incomplete understanding of atmospheric processes mean that forecasts become less accurate as the difference in current time and the time for which the forecast is being made (the range of the forecast) increases. The use of ensembles and model consensus help narrow the error and pick the most likely outcome.
Weather is the state of the atmosphere, to the degree that it is hot or cold, wet or dry, calm or stormy, clear or cloudy. Most weather phenomena occur in the troposphere, just below the stratosphere. Weather refers to day-to-day temperature and precipitation activity, whereas climate is the term for the statistics of atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time. When used without qualification, "weather" is generally understood to mean the weather of Earth.
Weather is driven by air pressure, temperature and moisture differences between one place and another. These differences can occur due to the sun's angle at any particular spot, which varies by latitude from the tropics. The strong temperature contrast between polar and tropical air gives rise to the jet stream. Weather systems in the mid-latitudes, such as extratropical cyclones, are caused by instabilities of the jet stream flow. Because the Earth's axis is tilted relative to its orbital plane, sunlight is incident at different angles at different times of the year. On Earth's surface, temperatures usually range ±40 °C (−40 °F to 100 °F) annually. Over thousands of years, changes in Earth's orbit can affect the amount and distribution of solar energy received by the Earth, thus influencing long-term climate and global climate change.

Weather and Forecasting is a scientific journal published by the American Meteorological Society. Articles on forecasting and analysis techniques, forecast verification studies, and case studies useful to forecasters. In addition, submissions that report on changes to the suite of operational numerical models and statistical post-processing techniques, and articles that demonstrate the transfer of research results to the forecasting community.
No matter the size of your boat, bad weather can very quickly ruin a day on the water. In this short video, Andrew Hart and Nick Duigan from popular Australian TV fishing series Hook, Line & Sinker take a look at the best ways to access, understand and respond to the up-to-the-minute marine weather forecasts issued by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). It looks at cutting edge tools like MetEye, which provides a detailed weather forecast for every six square kilometres of costal waters, as well as the text-only Marine Lite website for people boating in areas with low mobile phone coverage. www.bom.gov.au/australia/meteye/ and www.bom.gov.au/marine/lite/
If you're a boater, find out what five vital weather checks you should do before you head out on the water. These checks will help you to make the right choice about where and when it's safe to go boating. Go to http://www.bom.gov.au/marine for marine warnings, forecasts and information. Recorded in 2012. Understanding and interpreting weather forecasts, while it may well be a science, and an inaccurate science at that, is crucial to all who put to sea in boats, including boat anglers. Here Dr. Dave Schultz explains in laymans terms how to get the best out of the weather information available.

The forecast track is up the east coast just offshore but there is still a high degree of uncertainty. A new tropical storm is forecast to form east of the Lesser Antillies over the weekend and threaten the area early next week. A tropical depression off the African Coast could become a tropical storm as well on Saturday though it is no threat to land. Latest weather model analysis.

UK Met Office in new SEVERE weather warning as snow hits and temperature to feel like -14C ARCTIC conditions will grip Britain into the weekend as officials ramp up health warnings for killer cold weather. The Government today extended a “severe weather action” warning until Sunday afternoon when it will turn milder. Elderly people and those with medical conditions are urged to take care with further snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures forecast. Public Health England (PHE) with the Met Office warned extreme weather will increase the risk to the vulnerable while disrupting public services. The caution comes as experts predict temperatures will nosedive tomorrow bringing more wintry showers and harsh frosts. It follows a milder start to the week which saw melting snow and torrential downpour...

Weather models show a Major Atlantic Ocean storm will develop as it starts out off the East Coast of Florida and moves northeastward toward Nova Scotia. This system is forecast to intensify into a powerful storm with hurricane force winds possible over the ocean This storm could bring snow from Coastal Georgia and even as far south as Northeast Florida to Southern New England but how far inland and west will the snow fall remains a huge question. The offshore track suggests that the immediate coast will see some snow. Will the storm take a jump east before heading north? It could head for Nova Scotia at its peak forecast strength. Behind it another brutal cold arctic air mass comes in for the weekend.
