5 Girls is a documentary released in 2001 by Kartemquin Films for PBS's P.O.V. series. The film follows five strong young women between the ages of 13 and 17. Unlike the myriad reports, books and "specials" that focus on young women as passive and powerless, 5 Girls explores the ways these girls discover the resources necessary to successfully navigate the rocky waters of adolescence. It focuses on the positive ways girls learn to adapt to challenge in their lives by understanding and exercising choices, by believing in their strength when others do not and by resisting powerful cultural messages, which urge them to be silent.
Directed by Maria Finitzo, 5 Girls made its television premiere on PBS's P.O.V. on October 2, 2001.
At the time of the film's release, The New York Times praised 5 Girls for its "intimacy and candor". Reminiscent of Michael Apted's classic Up! series, the film unfolds into a bold "sociological portrait" showing the transformation of each girl into a woman. In 2002, 5 Girls was awarded the Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Film & Digital Media from the Council on Foundations. The film also took home The Silver Award from the Chicago Film & Television Competition.
Horror is a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's primal fears. Inspired by literature from authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and Mary Shelley, horror films have existed for more than a century. The macabre and the supernatural are frequent themes, and may overlap with the fantasy, supernatural fiction and thriller genres.
Horror films often deal with viewers' nightmares, fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage into the everyday world. Prevalent elements include ghosts, extraterrestrials, vampires, werewolves, demons, gore, torture, vicious animals, evil witches, monsters, zombies, cannibals, psychopaths, and serial killers. Movies about the supernatural are not necessarily horrific.
The first depictions of supernatural events appear in several of the silent shorts created by the film pioneer Georges Méliès in the late 1890s, the best known being Le Manoir du Diable, which is sometimes credited as being the first horror film. Another of his horror projects was 1898's La Caverne maudite (a.k.a. The Cave of the Unholy One, literally "the accursed cave").Japan made early forays into the horror genre with Bake Jizo and Shinin no Sosei, both made in 1898. The era featured a slew of literary adaptations, with the works of Poe and Dante, among others. In 1910, Edison Studios produced the first film version of Frankenstein, following the 1908 film adaptation of the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The macabre nature of the source materials used made the films synonymous with the horror film genre.

A girl is a female human from birth through childhood and adolescence to attainment of adulthood when she becomes a woman. The term girl may also be used to mean a young woman, and is often used as a synonym for daughter.
The English word girl first appeared during the Middle Ages between 1250 and 1300 CE and came from the Anglo-Saxon words gerle (also spelled girle or gurle). The Anglo-Saxon word gerela meaning dress or clothing item also seems to have been used as a metonym in some sense.
Girl has meant any young unmarried woman since about 1530. Its first noted meaning for sweetheart is 1648. The earliest known appearance of girl-friend is in 1892 and girl next door, meant as a teenaged female or young woman with a kind of wholesome appeal, dates only to 1961.
The word girl is sometimes used to refer to an adult female, usually a younger one. This usage may be considered derogatory or disrespectful in professional or other formal contexts, just as the term boy can be considered disparaging when applied to an adult man. Hence, this usage is often deprecative. It can also be used deprecatively when used to discriminate against children ("you're just a girl").
For two years, filmmaker Maria Finitzo followed five strong young women between the ages of 13 and 17.

There she goes, she's walkin' away
Each step she takes brings heartaches my way
He's won her heart, I lost her some way
There she goes, she's walkin' away
If I hadn't cheated, if I hadn't lied
I'd be the one who's walkin' by her side
I love her still and I guess that it shows
She's walkin' away, there she goes
SPOKEN: There she goes! She's walkin' away. Each step she takes?
brings heartaches my way.
If I hadn't cheated, if I hadn't lied
I'd be the one who's walkin' by her side (by her side)
I love her still and I guess that it shows
She's walkin' away, there she goes
There she goes
There she goes
