User-generated content (UGC) is defined as "any form of content such as blogs, wikis, discussion forums, posts, chats, tweets, podcasts, digital images, video, audio files, advertisements and other forms of media that was created by users of an online system or service, often made available via social media websites". It entered mainstream usage during 2005, having arisen in web publishing and new media content production circles. It is used for a wide range of applications, including problem processing, news, gossip and research and reflects the expansion of media production through new technologies that are accessible and affordable to the general public. Additionally, user-generated content may also employ a combination of open source, free software, and flexible licensing or related agreements to further reduce the barriers to collaboration, skill-building and discovery ("'UGC'") has also gained in popularity over the last decade, as userbases have grown on social media and content-based sharing sites.

In this talk I will cover some of my dissertation research that is devoted to the study of textual user-generated content on social media platforms. My work investigates the role of contextual information in discovering various types of semantic and experiential metadata from informal user-generated content toward the end goals of adding structure to unstructured utterances. I will present my investigations along three aspects of understanding user-generated content: (a) named entity recognition in informal text, with a focus on identifying cultural entities that allows us to trend and track their online mentions. (b) understanding user intentions behind expressed content, with a focus on identifying transactional and information seeking intents that are typically exploited by questio...

Seminario de investigación on título " USER-GENERATED CONTENT IN TOURISM RESEARCH: PRACTICAL AND METHODOLOGY CONSIDERATIONS " Impartido por SVETLANA STEPCHENKOVA (Department of Tourism, Recreation, & Sport Management - Associate Director of the Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute - University of Florida) The rapid growth of information generated by consumers of tourism and hospitality services is part of the Big Data revolution. The Internet and mobile technologies provide individuals with power to instantaneously add “digital traces” while traveling and report on their experiences by reviewing airline, hotel, and restaurant services, lodging a customer complaint, documenting a travel experience, or uploading photos and videos. User-generated content (UGC) has made the voice of the customer an increasingly powerful marketing tool. But UGC isn’t like other forms of creative content, and it can be tricky to manage. Marketing teams are spending more time searching for and securing the rights to UGC, and struggling to make it easily accessible. Webdam has partnered with Chute to help marketers unleash the power of UGC.
Speakers: Shawn Moyer Nathan Hamiel Ultimately, basing the value proposition of your site on user-generated and external content is a kind of variant on Russian Roulette, where in every turn the gun is pointed at your head, regardless of the number of players. You may win most of the time, but eventually a bullet is going to find its way into the chamber with your name on it. We spent some time last year looking at this problem as it related specifically to Social Networks, but that left a lot of the territory unexplored. This time around we'll be talking about a previously unnoticed attack vector for lots and lots of web applications with user-generated content, and releasing a handy tool to exploit it. Bundled in are some thoughts on Web 2.0 attack surface, a few new exploitation tech...

In this webinar, we talked about how User Generated Content can help to increase customer loyalty and sales.
This session will unveil new findings about the use of user generated content by eight online newspapers, including the New York Times and the Guardian, the Daily Mail, and the Sydney Morning Herald. The research reveals a very wide range of practices across different publications, and even within publications. The research also includes the voices of uploaders who often don’t even know their content has been used, and explains how they feel about the way they have been treated. Pete Brown will describe some of the shocking practices currently taking place and the panel will respond with their own thoughts about whether and how things can be improved. Google Adsense Policies - User Generated Content
News outlets are using more and more footage filmed by eyewitnesses at breaking news events. With the proliferation of mobile phones with high quality cameras and easy access to the social web, citizen journalists and these 'accidental journalists' can now film and upload photos and videos in seconds. This panel explores the issues that User Generated Content (UGC) throws up for for newsrooms integrating this type of content in their output in terms of ethics, verification, copyright law and vicarious trauma. Caroline Bannock and Fergus Bell work with UGC on a daily basis because of their roles at the Guardian and the AP, and Claire Wardle will be annoucing new findings from an ongoing research project on UGC funded by the Tow Center.
We all need to be the first to run social and user-generated content when breaking news happens. That is the nature of a competitive news business. But what about asking for permission, or even waiting to receive it? What about the time it take to check original sourcing? When all your competitors put a boiler-plate permission phrase on the witness's Instagram account or use automated software to acquire rights then should you? What about when it is a really big breaking story, do any of the above still apply? Yes, you can be competitive and act ethically when it comes to UGC and working with the people who create it, and there are many reasons why you should for the sake of your organisation. Join Fergus Bell and Claire Wardle, who will be facilitating a discussion on the solutions to the...
The Ethics of User-Generated Content in Political and Commercial Strategic Communication Campaigns Dec. 5, 2011 Political organizations and commercial firms are increasingly using social media and user-generated content to promote their causes, candidates and products. UNC School of Media and Journalism professors Daniel Kreiss and Daren C. Brabham discuss how these strategic actors disseminate content that appears to be user-generated, create undisclosed partnerships with blogs and other new media outlets, and profit from the appropriation of voluntarily-produced cultural content. They argue that these practices are increasingly part of the strategic communications landscape across many domains of social activity, and raise troubling ethical issues with respect to the transparency of pol...
