If you're planning on working your way up into the film industry, PAing is a rite of passage. Production Assistants (P.A.'s) are often overlooked, but are a crucial part of any production. They work as a team, have their eyes on everything, facilitate communication across the entire set, and keep everything running smoothly. On the set of RocketJump: The Show, we gave production assistant Colin West McDonald a go pro and followed him as he went about his day on the short "Tip Jar."

WHAT YOU DO: A production assistant in the television or film industries takes care of any odd jobs that need to be done for a production, including answering phones, transporting actors, getting equipment, taking out the trash, and other random tasks.
EDUCATION: A degree in film and TV production can be helpful.
USEFUL SKILLS: Communication, friendliness, patience, determination, enthusiasm, energy, and the ability to follow directions.
HOW TO GET IN: Get some experience working on college student productions (film schools often have online job boards). Network and develop contacts; film students eventually graduate and will be interested in working with people they already know. Contact studios, production companies (especially commercial production companies) and production managers, and tell them that you're available as a PA. Be persistent, within reason.
CAREER PATH: A job as a PA can used as a first step towards lots of different careers in the industry, such as editing, producing, or directing. As a PA, you get experience working on a set and meeting people who can help you move forward. The friendliest, most helpful, and hardest working PAs are remembered when directors or producers are looking for a new assistant editor, production coordinator, or camera assistant.
PAYBACK: Typically around $35,000 per year, generally part-time.
DOWNSIDES: The PAs are the first ones on set and the last ones to leave. They take orders from almost everyone else on set, and usually end up doing the jobs that no one else wants.
FUTURE OF JOB: The number of jobs is expected to grow up to 2% in the 2013-2022 decade, which is slower than average.

Getting a PA job is as hard as any job search. The first question is "Where do I start?" You can start on job sites, craigslist or production staffing websites.
DISCLAIMER: BE VERY CAREFUL ON CRAIGSLIST. EXTREME CAUTION!!
Reach out to production houses, filmmakers and videographers about their company. BUT DO NOT start the email off by asking for a job. "Hi, I'm looking to see if you have any openings." [DELETE]
Offer that company something of value. What can you bring to the table?

Production assistant
A production assistant, also known as a PA, is a member of the film crew and is a job title used in filmmaking and television for a person responsible for various aspects of a production. The job of a PA can vary greatly depending on the budget and specific requirements of a production as well as whether or not the production is unionized.
Production assistants on films are sometimes attached to individual actors or filmmakers.
Television and feature film
In unionized television and feature film, production assistants are usually divided into different categories: "Set PA", "Truck PA", "Locations PA", "Office PA", or "Set Runner" and "Extra PA or Daily" - Variations exist depending on a show's structure or region of the United States or Canada.
Office PAs usually spend most hours in the respective show's production office handling such tasks as phones, deliveries, script copies, lunch pick-ups, and related tasks in coordination with the production manager and production coordinator.

Pension tax simplification
Pension tax simplification, often simply referred to as "pension simplification" and taking effect from A-day on 6 April 2006 was a policy announced in 2004 by the Labour government to rationalise the British tax system as applied to pension schemes. The aim was to reduce the complicated patchwork of legislation built-up by successive administrations which were seen as acting as a barrier to the public when considering retirement planning. The government wanted to encourage retirement provision by simplifying the previous eight tax regimes into one single regime for all individual and occupational pensions.
Main changes
Broadly the new regime allows considerable freedom in the tax relievable contributions that may be made to pension schemes, and the assets in which they may be invested. It also however caps the size of tax favoured pension fund that may be accumulated by an individual. This 'lifetime allowance' was set at £1.6M for 2007–08. Funds accumulated in excess of the lifetime allowance are subject to a tax charge of 55%. Transitional protection provisions were made for individuals who had already accumulated pension funds in excess of this amount.

WHAT YOU DO: A production assistant in the television or film industries takes care of any odd jobs that need to be done for a production, including answering phones, transporting actors, getting equipment, taking out the trash, and other random tasks. EDUCATION: A degree in film and TV production can be helpful. USEFUL SKILLS: Communication, friendliness, patience, determination, enthusiasm, energy, and the ability to follow directions. HOW TO GET IN: Get some experience working on college student productions (film schools often have online job boards). Network and develop contacts; film students eventually graduate and will be interested in working with people they already know. Contact studios, production companies (especially commercial production companies) and production managers, and tell them that you're available as a PA. Be persistent, within reason. CAREER PATH: A job as a PA can used as a first step towards lots of different careers in the industry, such as editing, producing, or directing. As a PA, you get experience working on a set and meeting people who can help you move forward. The friendliest, most helpful, and hardest working PAs are remembered when directors or producers are looking for a new assistant editor, production coordinator, or camera assistant. PAYBACK: Typically around $35,000 per year, generally part-time. DOWNSIDES: The PAs are the first ones on set and the last ones to leave. They take orders from almost everyone else on set, and usually end up doing the jobs that no one else wants. FUTURE OF JOB: The number of jobs is expected to grow up to 2% in the 2013-2022 decade, which is slower than average. WHAT YOU DO: A production assistant in the television or film industries takes care of any odd jobs that need to be done for a production, including answering phones, transporting actors, getting equipment, taking out the trash, and other random tasks.
EDUCATION: A degree in film and TV production can be helpful.
USEFUL SKILLS: Communication, friendliness, patience, determination, enthusiasm, energy, and the ability to follow directions.
HOW TO GET IN: Get some experience working on college student productions (film schools often have online job boards). Network and develop contacts; film students eventually graduate and will be interested in working with people they already know. Contact studios, production companies (especially commercial production companies) and production managers, and tell them that you're available as a PA. Be persistent, within reason.
CAREER PATH: A job as a PA can used as a first step towards lots of different careers in the industry, such as editing, producing, or directing. As a PA, you get experience working on a set and meeting people who can help you move forward. The friendliest, most helpful, and hardest working PAs are remembered when directors or producers are looking for a new assistant editor, production coordinator, or camera assistant.
PAYBACK: Typically around $35,000 per year, generally part-time.
DOWNSIDES: The PAs are the first ones on set and the last ones to leave. They take orders from almost everyone else on set, and usually end up doing the jobs that no one else wants.
FUTURE OF JOB: The number of jobs is expected to grow up to 2% in the 2013-2022 decade, which is slower than average.
NETWORKING: Wikipedia has an extensive list of film production companies:

Getting a PA job is as hard as any job search. The first question is "Where do I start?" You can start on job sites, craigslist or production staffing websites.

Reach out to production houses, filmmakers and videographers about their company. BUT DO NOT start the email off by asking for a job. "Hi, I'm looking to see if you have any openings." [DELETE]
Offer that company something of value. What can you bring to the table?

What resonates the hardest is visual storytelling. The ability to create an emotion or convey an idea through an image is what drives my career as a filmmaker. My marathon mentality is focused on becoming the best cinematographer possible.
