Some additional tips and notes that I didn't mention in this video...
- You don't have to load film in the dark. You will expose a couple feet of film but the remaining 48 feet will be fine. Just make sure you load in a shaded area and not in direct sunlight.
- If you don't have an extra roll of 16mm film to practice loading your camera with, you can cut a few feet off of a fresh roll of 16mm film and just practice with that.
- http://K3camera.com is a great website to go to and is filled with tons of great info on learning more about the K3 camera.
- When your 16mm camera is not in-use its best to hold down the trigger and run out the drive spring so camera isn't wound.
- If your light meter doesn't go all the way down to "0" when sensor is covered, there is a flathead screw on the back that you can turn and fine tune your meter.
- If you are shooting outside with lots of light, you will insert the "high" slide plate found on the back of light meter into the light sensor. You will then line everything up with the "red arrow" instead of the "white arrow".

The Waiters - Kens directorial thesis film from NYUs Film School - has aired on Bravo, IFC, PBS and CBS plus numerous foreign TV networks including France's Canal Plus. The Waiters also won top awards at The Chicago, Columbus International, Suffolk County and NYUs First Run Film Festivals- and was a finalist for the Student Academy Award. Additionally, it has been programmed by numerous other festivals including The British International, Frances Short Circuit, and the Tel Aviv International Film Festivals to name a few. Written by Thomas Lennon with notable appearances by David Wain, Joe Lo Truglio, Kevin Allison and Michael Patrick Jann (all from MTV's "The State", the comedy group of which Ken was a founding member.) Also notable is writer/director Peter Hedges who is waiting "to move that bunny." Music composed by Craig Wedren. Additional appearances of interest... Ken's grandmother, grandfather and father.

This is one of the oldest lenses for Sony's mirrorless E-Mount cameras, a small pancake device. It can give coverage for sensors as big as APS-C (you could put it on a full-frame Sony mirrorless camera, but you'll have to shoot in crop mode). Let's see how it performs on a modern, 24mp camera.

A video essay I did for a film class on the movie Steve Jobs and its use of digital and actual film stocks.
Unfortunately, due to video compression, some of the differences between the types of film don't show up too well, particularly the differences in film grain, but hopefully you'll still be able to get what I'm talking about!

16 mm film
16 mm film is a popular, economical gauge of film. 16 mm is the width of the film. Other common film gauges include 8 mm and 35 mm. It is generally used for non-theatrical (e.g., industrial, educational) film making or for low budget motion pictures. It also existed as a popular amateur or home movie making format for several decades, alongside 8 mm film and, later, Super 8 mm film. In 1923, Eastman Kodak released the first 16 mm "outfit" consisting of a camera, projector, tripod, screen and splicer for $335. RCA-Victor introduced a 16 mm sound movie projector in 1932 and developed an optical sound-on-film 16 mm camera, released in 1935.
History
Eastman Kodak introduced 16 mm film in 1923 as a less expensive amateur alternative to 35 mm film. During the 1920s, the format was often referred to as sub-standard by the professional industry.
Kodak hired Willard Beech Cook from his 28 mm Pathescope of America company to create the new 16 mm Kodascope Library. In addition to making home movies, people could buy or rent films from the library, a key selling aspect of the format.

Film
A film, also called a movie, motion picture or photoplay, is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images due to the phi phenomenon. This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed rapidly in succession. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself. The contemporary definition of cinema is the art of simulating experiences to communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by the means of recorded or programmed moving images along with other sensory stimulations.

Short film
A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. Although no consensus exists as to where that boundary is drawn, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". The term featurette originally applied to a film longer than a short subject, but shorter than a standard feature film.
The increasingly rare term short subject means approximately the same thing. An industry term, it carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Short is an abbreviation for either term. Short films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals and made by independent filmmakers for non profit, either with a low budget or no budget at all. They are usually funded by film grants, non profit organizations, sponsor, or personal funds. Short films are generally used by filmmakers to gain experience and/or prove their talent in order to gain funding for future films from private investors, entertainment companies, or film studios.

Michele Bohbot
Michele Bohbot (born 1960) is a Moroccan-born American fashion designer and retailer.
Biography
Michele Bohbot was born in Fez, Morocco to a Jewish family. At the age of nineteen, she moved to Paris where she studied philosophy and law at Sorbonne University. When she was 19, she married her husband, Marc, who proposed to her four days after they met.
Michele has been the recipient of multiple awards. In October 2001, she was recognized as the "Best Contemporary Designer" at the Dallas Fashion Awards. In April 2002, she was honored as one of "The Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World." In February 2008, she was named as Esteemed Entrepreneur of the Year at The RAW SPIRIT AWARDS in Los Angeles.
Michele currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband Marc and their seven children.
Bisou Bisou
Michele started her fashion career in Paris where she opened her first fashion outlet called "Micky 1." Michele went on to open and manage a number of retail stores that she and Marc owned around Paris.

My girlfriend enjoys baking and I filming, so this was bound to happen. I have intentionally left some light leaks and "native" cuts. The image is cropped at 130% to remove some edges. Also, youtube doesn't take kindly to film an film grain in its compression. So I firmly advice against fulls screen unless you are at a distance. As you can see my old Krasnogorsk-3 scratches the film quite a bit. And its not the most stable camera. But I don't care, this is my memory and I love it :) The stock was Kodak 50D/7203 scanned at 2K. Exported in 1440p. 4) Taking a proper light reading with a traditional light meter, HDSLR, and an iPhone.
Some additional tips and notes that I didn't mention in this video...
- You don't have to load film in the dark. You will expose a couple feet of film but the remaining 48 feet will be fine. Just make sure you load in a shaded area and not in direct sunlight.
- If you don't have an extra roll of 16mm film to practice loading your camera with, you can cut a few feet off of a fresh roll of 16mm film and just practice with that.
- http://K3camera.com is a great website to go to and is filled with tons of great info on learning more about the K3 camera.
- When your 16mm camera is not in-use its best to hold down the trigger and run out the drive spring so camera isn't wound.
- If your light meter doesn't go all the way down to "0" when sensor is covered, there is a flathead screw on the back that you can turn and fine tune your meter.
- If you are shooting outside with lots of light, you will insert the "high" slide plate found on the back of light meter into the light sensor. You will then line everything up with the "red arrow" instead of the "white arrow".

The Waiters also won top awards at The Chicago, Columbus International, Suffolk County and NYUs First Run Film Festivals- and was a finalist for the Student Academy Award. Additionally, it has been programmed by numerous other festivals including The British International, Frances Short Circuit, and the Tel Aviv International Film Festivals to name a few. Written by Thomas Lennon with notable appearances by David Wain, Joe Lo Truglio, Kevin Allison and Michael Patrick Jann (all from MTV's "The State", the comedy group of which Ken was a founding member.) After a six-year stint as the camera rental manager of CineVideoTech, he pursued his love for film in the field, running up an impressive list of credits. He worked his way up from technician to second assistant, second to first, first to operator, operator to second unit Director of Photography, second unit DP to Director of Photography on his first feature film, “Jungle Juice”, starring Christopher Walken, Morgan Fairchild, Robert Wagner and Rutger Hauer.
Shortly after this achievement, Egon’s father fell ill and his duty to continue the legacy his father had begun took precedence over his own successful career. He took over the helm at CineVideoTech in 2002 and has since been busy recreating the company that has launched so many successful careers into a vision of what is to come.

My girlfriend enjoys baking and I filming, so this was bound to happen. I have intentionally left some light leaks and "native" cuts.
The image is cropped at 130% to remove some edges.
Also, youtube doesn't take kindly to film an film grain in its compression. So I firmly advice against fulls screen unless you are at a distance.
As you can see my old Krasnogorsk-3 scratches the film quite a bit. And its not the most stable camera.
But I don't care, this is my memory and I love it :)
The stock was Kodak 50D/7203 scanned at 2K.
Exported in 1440p.
