What is LEEP? Short for Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure, which uses a fine wire loop heated by an electric current to remove tissue & cells from the cervix. This procedure is used as part of the diagnosis & treatment of abnormal or cancerous conditions in women. LEEP uses a wire loop that carries a low-voltage electrical current to cut away a thin layer of abnormal tissue. It's typically performed after abnormal cells are found during Pap test, colposcopy or cervical biopsy.
How is LEEP done? You will be asked to lie down on the exam table with your feet elevated in stirrups, just like when you have a Pap smear. The dr. will then insert a speculum to help open the vaginal walls, which will allow access to the cervix. An acetic acid such as vinegar or Iodine will be applied to your cervix to help make the abnormal areas of tissue more easily recognized. After the area is numbed using a local anesthetic the Dr. will use the fine wire loop which will deliver a low-voltage electrical current while it's passed through the tissues to remove the abnormal areas. Finally, the blood vessels in the area are sealed and Monsel's solution will be applied to prevent bleeding. The tissue is then sent to the lab for examination. Most women can go home 15-20 minutes following the procedure.
What can I expect after the LEEP procedure? Many women experience mild cramping and pain for a day or two following the procedure. Spotting and vaginal discharge commonly occur for a few weeks after LEEP. It's important to not douche or use tampons for several weeks following. In general, women should wait 3-4 weeks after the procedure before having vaginal intercourse. This will allow for your cervix to heal & helps reduce the risk of infection.
How effective is LEEP? LEEP has been shown effective 90% of the time and is just as effective as cryotherapy, laser treatment and a cone biopsy.
Is LEEP Safe? As with any surgical procedure there are risks, complications may occur. Rare complications have occurred in about 1%-2% of women who undergo the LEEP procedure.

Loop electrical excision procedure
The loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is one of the most commonly used approaches to treat high grade cervical dysplasia (CIN II/III, HGSIL) discovered on colposcopic examination. In the UK it is known as large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ). The procedure has many advantages including low cost, high success rate, and ease of use. The procedure can be done in an office setting and usually only requires a local anesthetic, though sometimes IV sedation or a general anesthetic is used.
Process
When performing a LEEP, the physician uses a wire loop through which an electric current is passed at variable power settings. Various shapes and sizes of loop can be used depending on the size and orientation of the lesion. The cervical transformation zone and lesion are excised to an adequate depth, which in most cases is at least 8 mm, and extending 4 to 5 mm beyond the lesion. A second pass with a more narrow loop can also be done to obtain an endocervical specimen for further histologic evaluation.

What is a LEEP procedure? LEEP stands for Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure. It's a procedure done in the doctor's office after you receive an abnormal pap smear. Most abnormal pap smears are caused by the HPV virus which many women are exposed to throughout their life. Many of these changes will resolve on their own, but sometimes they can progress to precancerous changes which need to be treated. Usually an abnormal pap smear is followed up and confirmed by a colposcopy in the office. When the abnormal findings are confirmed -- it can be treated with the LEEP procedure. What should I expect? The procedure is done in the physician's office and takes about 20 minutes. It's similar to a pelvic exam. A thin wire loop is used to remove the affected tissue. The tissue is sent to the lab for further testing. A colposcopy is often done at the same time or prior to the procedure to help identify the abnormal areas. What are the risks of the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure? Complications are minor and may include minor bleeding and cramping. You should report any heavy bleeding to your doctor immediately. Taking an over the counter pain reliever like ibuprofen before the procedure can help alleviate any cramping. Your physician will instruct you to avoid things like taking baths, intercourse, and tampons for up to six weeks. What is the follow up for a Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure? Your physician will require a follow up Pap smear in six months to make sure abnormal cervical cells don't redevelop. It's typically performed after abnormal cells are found during Pap test, colposcopy or cervical biopsy.
How is LEEP done? You will be asked to lie down on the exam table with your feet elevated in stirrups, just like when you have a Pap smear. The dr. will then insert a speculum to help open the vaginal walls, which will allow access to the cervix. An acetic acid such as vinegar or Iodine will be applied to your cervix to help make the abnormal areas of tissue more easily recognized. After the area is numbed using a local anesthetic the Dr. will use the fine wire loop which will deliver a low-voltage electrical current while it's passed through the tissues to remove the abnormal areas. Finally, the blood vessels in the area are sealed and Monsel's solution will be applied to prevent bleeding. The tissue is then sent to the lab for examination. Most women can go home 15-20 minutes following the procedure.
What can I expect after the LEEP procedure? Many women experience mild cramping and pain for a day or two following the procedure. Spotting and vaginal discharge commonly occur for a few weeks after LEEP. It's important to not douche or use tampons for several weeks following. In general, women should wait 3-4 weeks after the procedure before having vaginal intercourse. This will allow for your cervix to heal & helps reduce the risk of infection.
How effective is LEEP? LEEP has been shown effective 90% of the time and is just as effective as cryotherapy, laser treatment and a cone biopsy.
Is LEEP Safe? As with any surgical procedure there are risks, complications may occur. Rare complications have occurred in about 1%-2% of women who undergo the LEEP procedure.

Many of these changes will resolve on their own, but sometimes they can progress to precancerous changes which need to be treated. Usually an abnormal pap smear is followed up and confirmed by a colposcopy in the office. When the abnormal findings are confirmed -- it can be treated with the LEEP procedure.
What should I expect?
The procedure is done in the physician's office and takes about 20 minutes. It's similar to a pelvic exam. A thin wire loop is used to remove the affected tissue. The tissue is sent to the lab for further testing. A colposcopy is often done at the same time or prior to the procedure to help identify the abnormal areas.
What are the risks of the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure?
Complications are minor and may include minor bleeding and cramping. You should report any heavy bleeding to your doctor immediately. Taking an over the counter pain reliever like ibuprofen before the procedure can help alleviate any cramping. Your physician will instruct you to avoid things like taking baths, intercourse, and tampons for up to six weeks.
What is the follow up for a Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure?
Your physician will require a follow up Pap smear in six months to make sure abnormal cervical cells don't redevelop. Remember early detection is key
