The Bang Bang Club is the real life story of a group of four young combat photographers - Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva, Kevin Carter and Ken Oosterbroek - bonded by friendship and their sense of purpose to tell the truth. They risked their lives and used their camera lenses to tell the world of the brutality and violence associated with the first free elections in post Apartheid South Africa in the early 90s. This intense political period brought out their best work (two won Pulitzers during the period) but cost them a heavy price. Based on the book of the same name by Marinovich and Silva, the film stars Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman and Taylor Kitsch and explores the thrill, danger and moral questions associated with exposing the truth.

Bang-Bang Club
The Bang Bang Club was a label primarily associated with four photographers active within the townships of South Africa between 1990 and 1994, during the transition from the apartheid system to government based on universal suffrage. This period saw much black on black factional violence, particularly fighting between ANC and IFP supporters, after the lifting of the bans on both political parties.
Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and João Silva were the four associated with the name, although a number of photographers and photojournalists worked alongside them (such as James Nachtwey and Gary Bernard). A movie about the group, directed by Steven Silver and starring Taylor Kitsch, Ryan Phillippe and Malin Åkerman, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010.
History
The name "The Bang Bang Club" was born out of an article published in the South African magazine Living. Originally named The Bang Bang Paparazzi, it was changed to "Club" because the members felt the word paparazzi misrepresented their work. The name comes from the culture itself; township residents spoke to the photographers about the "bang-bang" in reference to violence occurring within their communities, but more literally, "bang-bang" refers to the sound of gunfire and is a colloquialism used by conflict photographers.

The Bang
The Bang is a South African Indie pop band from Johannesburg, South Africa. The band presently consists of Joshua Gregg (Vocals, Guitar, Mandolin, Kazoo); Brad Kallenbach (Guitar, Mandolin, Backing Vocals); Gad de Combes (Keyboards, Accordion, Melodica, Harmonica, Backing Vocals); Stefan Lawrence (Drums, Percussion); Barry Sherman (Bass, Backing Vocals)
History
The Bang was formed in 1999 by lead vocalist/guitarist Joshua Gregg and bassist Barry Sherman. The band went through various line-ups, including drummer Danny Girnun, who played drums on the band’s E.P. Of Engines And Earthworms, recorded at Ian Osrin’s Digital Cupboard in November 2001, under the band-name 3Speed
In 2003, local producer Adrian Levi (brother of music video director, Daniel Levi), heard the E.P., and promptly signed the band to his indie label Chameleon Records South Africa (home of the South African band, Max Normal)
The Bang’s debut full-length album, Shiny was recorded over 2004 and 2005, and was released in September 2005.

Taylor Kitsch
Taylor Kitsch (born April 8, 1981) is a Canadian actor and model. He is best known for his role as Tim Riggins in the NBC series Friday Night Lights (2006–2011), Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), and Lieutenant Alex Hopper in Battleship (2012).
Kitsch has also starred in John Carter (2012) as the eponymous lead character, Savages (2012), and Lone Survivor (2013), in which he portrayed Michael Murphy. He also starred as Officer Paul Woodrugh in the second season of the HBO series True Detective.
Early life
Kitsch was born in Kelowna, British Columbia. His mother, Susan Green, worked for the BC Liquor Board while his father, Drew Kitsch, worked in construction. His parents separated when he was one, and he and his two older brothers (Brody and Daman) were raised by their mother in a mobile home park. He also has two younger maternal half sisters. Kitsch lived in Port Moody and Anmore. He started playing ice hockey at age 3. He attended Gleneagle Secondary School in Coquitlam. He played junior ice hockey for the Langley Hornets in the British Columbia Hockey League, before a knee injury ended his career. Following his injury, Kitsch took nutrition and economic courses from the University of Lethbridge for a year and lived with his brother.

Unlike other photographers, members of the 'Bang Bang Club' ventured into black townships to witness scenes of bloody battles. Spurred on by adrenaline, they placed their lives in danger to capture the events that most whites were unaware of.

Two were awarded Pulitzer Prizes for their acclaimed work. The film tells the remarkable and sometimes harrowing story of these young men - and the extraordinary extremes they went to in order to capture their pictures. Robin (Malin Akerman) is their photo-editor, who looked out for them, protected them and made sure their photographs were seen across the world. Based on the book by Marinovich and Silva, The Bang Bang Club tells the true story of these four young men, recounting their relationships with each other and the stresses, tensions and moral dilemmas of working in situations of extreme violence, pain and suffering. It is also the story of the final demise of apartheid and the birth of a new South Africa.
