John Lynch (actor)

John Lynch (born 26 December 1961) is an Irish actor and novelist.

Biography

John Lynch was born in Corrinshego, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, near Newry, County Down. He attended St Colman's College, Newry. He began acting in Irish language-medium plays at school during the early years of the conflict in Northern Ireland. He is the eldest of five children of an Irish father and an Italian mother. His younger sister Susan is also an actress.

Lynch is also a novelist. His first novel, Torn Water, was published in November 2005 by the Fourth Estate, a literary imprint of Harper and Collins, and his second, Falling Out of Heaven, was published on 13 May 2010 by the same publisher. He separated from Mary McGuckian, in 2008 and the marriage was annulled mid-2012.

Acting career

Lynch has appeared in numerous films related to Northern Ireland's problems, among others, such as Cal (1984) with Helen Mirren,In the Name of the Father (1993), with Daniel Day-Lewis, The Railway Station Man (1992), with Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, Nothing Personal and Some Mother's Son (1996), also with Mirren, as well as the Irish-themed film Evelyn (2002).

Lynch was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round (82nd pick overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft. Lynch played his first 11 seasons in the league with the Buccaneers. When he arrived, the Buccaneers were among the worst teams in the league; his first three years were the last of a record stretch of 10-loss seasons. However, he was a key player on the aggressive Tampa 2 defenses of the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 2002, Lynch collected a Super Bowl ring in Super Bowl XXXVII with the Bucs. From 1997-2005 the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had one of the Best Defenses of All Time. Under Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin the Bucs placed top 10 in defense 9 out of 9 years. 7 out of the 9 years they were top 5. 8 different defenders were sent to the pro bowl (Donnie Abraham, Hardy Nickerson, John Lynch, Warren Sapp, Simeon Rice, Derrick Brooks, Shelton Quarles, and Ronde Barber) 5 of which were All Pro at some point. Sapp and Brooks were named Defensive player of the year during that span ( Sapp 1999) (Brooks 2002) The 2002 Buccaneers were the #1defense in yards allowed and points allowed. They gave up an oppose passer rating of 48.4. They were the last defense in NFL History to hold opposing teams to under 200 points (they gave up 196) They had 31 interceptions in regular season play. SO FAR, the Bucs defense during this time have had two first ballot Hall of Famers. (Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks) It would be no surprise to eventually see Lynch, Barber and Tony Dungy. I also personally believe Simeon Rice should make it. He is one of the most underrated players of all time. In his five healthy years as a Buccaneer he posted 11,15,15,12,and 14 sacks. In the 02 Post season he had 4.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in 3 games. Simeon has 121 career sacks. Simeon Rice was one of the biggest reasons the Bucs final won a Super Bowl. Before 2001 the Bucs had to work with Marcus Jones, Regan Upshaw, Chidi Ahanotu, Steve White etc. Those guys were no where near the caliber of Rice. Who knows how many Super Bowls the Bucs could have won had Simeon been there in 99 and 2000, I truly believe he belongs in the Hall of Fame. Anyway, Go Bucs. Winston will lead us to the promise land. I believe.

The song was recorded with Daniel Lanois on the pedal steel guitar for the film. However, a different mix than the one heard in the film appears on the soundtrack. The song credits author Salman Rushdie as its writer because the lyrics are taken from his book of the same name. U2 singer, Bono, came up with the idea for the song after reading a manuscript of Rushdie's novel. In the novel, the fictional character Ormus Cama writes the lyrics as a lamentation for his lover, Vina Apsara. U2 uses these lyrics almost word for word, however omitting the following line: "She was my ground, my favorite sound, my country road, my city street, my sky above, my only love, and the ground beneath my feet." Rushdie, himself, was very pleased with the song, claiming it had "some of the most beautiful melodies [Bono] had ever come up with." In reference to the song, Rushdie said, "So I always knew, you know, that it wasn't going to be an uptempo foot-tapper, because it's a sad song. I think it sounds like, I hope, one of those big U2 ballads for which Bono's voice, actually, is beautifully well suited." It peaked at number one in many countries' charts, including the UK Singles Chart. The song received mixed reviews from critics. A 30-second sample of "Discothèque" was leaked to the Internet on 26 October 1996. By 27 December, the entire track had been leaked, after which U2 moved up the release date. "Discothèque" debuted at #3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart, and hit #1 the following week. It was certified Gold by the RIAA on 7 April 1997. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #10, but dropped off the charts after only four weeks in the Top 40. It was also the band's sixth (and last) top ten single in the US. It debuted at #1 on the UK singles chart, remaining on top for one week and spending a total of eleven weeks in the chart. The song was remixed for U2's The Best of 1990-2000 greatest hits album, released in 2002. The new version features a longer intro and subtle use of the techno-sounding drum beat that figured prominently in the opening of the original track. The 'new' "Discotheque" was similar in sound to how U2 performed the song during the PopMart Tour in 1997 and 1998.
