Republican Party may refer to:
The following is a list of political parties whose names (in English) could be translated to Democratic Party or the Democrats.
Republican can refer to:
A party is a gathering of people who have been invited by a host for the purposes of socializing, conversation, recreation, or as part of a festival or other commemoration of a special occasion. A party will typically feature food and beverages, and often music and dancing or other forms of entertainment. In many Western countries, parties for teens and adults are associated with drinking alcohol such as beer, wine or distilled spirits.
Some parties are held in honor of a specific person, day, or event, such as a birthday party, a Super Bowl party, or a St. Patrick’s Day party. Parties of this kind are often called celebrations. A party is not necessarily a private occasion. Public parties are sometimes held in restaurants, pubs, beer gardens, nightclubs or bars, and people attending such parties may be charged an admission fee by the host. Large parties in public streets may celebrate events such as Mardi Gras or the signing of a peace treaty ending a long war.
The Republican Party, commonly referred to as the GOP (abbreviation for Grand Old Party), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, the other being its historic rival, the Democratic Party.
Founded by anti-slavery activists, modernists, ex-Whigs, and ex-Free Soilers in 1854, the Republicans dominated politics nationally and in the majority of northern States for most of the period between 1860 and 1932. There have been 18 Republican presidents, the first being Abraham Lincoln, who served from 1861 until his assassination in 1865, and the most recent being George W. Bush, who served from 2001 to 2009. The most recent Republican presidential nominee is former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who lost in 2012 to Democratic incumbent Barack Obama.
Although it is named after republicanism, that concept is no longer widely used. Instead republican ideals have been incorporated into the concept of conservatism, which serves as the ideological core of the party. This conservatism contrasts with the modern liberalism of the Democrats. The Republican Party's conservatism involves support for free market capitalism, free enterprise, business, a strong national defense, deregulation, restrictions on labor unions, social-conservative policies (particularly opposition to abortion), and traditional values, usually with a Christian foundation. The party is deeply split on the issue of how to deal with illegal immigration.

"A group of progressives gathered in Washington this weekend to try to lure Sen. Bernie Sanders to lead the creation of new political party, but the former Democratic presidential candidate was a no-show. Nevertheless, the group calling itself Draft Bernie for a People’s Party delivered an invite to Sanders signed by 50,000 supporters, and the head of the group said they are ready to move forward with a new party “with or without Bernie.” The several hundred people gathered for the Convergence Conference cheered throughout the meeting when the Democratic and Republican parties were criticized for succumbing to corporate influence and when speakers such as Harvard University professor Cornel West and Socialist Seattle City Councilwoman Kshama Sawant called for a revolution in American pol...

According to a new poll conducted by Gallup, the Republican Party is losing quite a bit of voters as they no longer wish to identify with the Party. But that doesn’t mean they are flocking to the Democratic side. Instead, these people are becoming what is called “pure independents” with no party allegiance, a sign that Third Parties might finally be able to make some progress in elections. We know that democrat voters are more likely to be more educated. But new research published in Psychological Science found a correlation between low intelligence in childhood and greater racism in adulthood, as well as a tendency to hold a conservative ideology. The researchers speculated that people with lower intelligence have poor abstract reasoning skills – they find it difficult to understand subtle or abstract concepts, and things that are different to them. Now don’t get me wrong – in no way does this study suggest is not necessarily that all liberals are geniuses and all conservatives are ignorant. In fact, rich Republicans may be some of the smartest people in the world. The idea is that for those who lack a cognitive ability to grasp complexities of our world, simplified, b...

After being shuttered for 10 years, students at Howard University recently reinstated the school’s college Republicans group. And they had some help… from the party. In November, at its launch party, the group was presented with a $2,000 check from the Republican National Committee chairman, Reince Priebus. Leah Le’Vell, a member of the RNC’s African American Strategic Initiatives Team, was there to present the check. Le’Vell, who served as a student advisor to the National Diversity Coalition for Trump at Georgia State University, says she believe many black Americans do align with the Republican Party but that the persecution that comes with being an openly black Republican keeps many of these voters silent. “Social media’s super popular these days and there’s so much persecution,”...
"Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) host of The Young Turks discusses Stephen A. Smith and his reasons why he wants all black Americans to vote for the GOP in 2016. Stephen A. Smith, a host on ESPN, had a few ideas about party politics and chose to share them during a recent speech. He wished every black American would vote Republican in the upcoming 2016 election. His reasoning is that black Americans as a demographic has mostly voted Democrat in the past and he would like to send a message to both parties that neither could always count on the votes as they had in the past. He feels it is time that blacks stop feeling disenfranchised by politicians and took charge of what was happening in politics. Some are seeing this as another symptom of Smith being a closet Republican th...

Tuesday at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women, former first lady Michelle Obama said when she attended the State of the Union address she would notice the Republican side was “all men, all white,” and that was why she argued many people of color “don’t trust politics.” Speaking about diversity, Obama said, “We should be working actively to mix it up, so we’re getting a real broad range of perspectives on every issue. Shoot, I would see that in Congress.” She explained, “At the State of the Union address … when you are in the room what you can see is this real dichotomy. It’s a feeling of color almost. On one side of the room is literally gray and white. Literally, that is the color palette on one side of the room. On the other side of the room, there are yellows and blues and whites a...
Republican Senators Bob Corker of Tennessee and Jeff Flake of Arizona have declared their retirement after loud public disagreements with President Donald Trump and his handling of the presidency. Daily Beast columnist Eleanor Clift wonders whether the senators’ withdrawal from politics will “accelerate the disintegration of the Republican Party and encourage more people to come out and speak against President Trump.” Then Our Revolution president Nina Turner and Hoover Institute fellow Lanhee Chen weigh in on differences between the GOP of a decade ago and its current shape, discussing “how far down the rat-hole we’ve gotten in terms of the political dialogue,” as well as tax reform and the “disruptive” populism of Steve Bannon. Richardson’s first book, The Greatest Nation on Earth (1997), stemmed from her dissertation at Harvard University. Inspired by Eric Foner’s work on pre-Civil War Republican ideology, Richardson analyzed Republican economic policies during the war. She contended that their efforts to create an activist Federal Government during the Civil War marked a continuation of Republican free labor ideology. These policies, such as war bonds and greenbacks or the Land Grant College Act and the Homestead Act, revolutionized the role of the Federal Government in the U.S. economy. At the same time, these actions laid the groundwork for the Republican Party’s shift to Big Business after the Civil War. Four years later, Richardson extended her study of Republican policy into the postwar period with The De...

In American politics, the Southern strategy refers to a Republican Party strategy of gaining political support for certain candidates in the Southern United States by appealing to racism against African Americans. Though the "Solid South" had been a longtime Democratic Party stronghold due to the Democratic Party's defense of slavery before the American Civil War and segregation for a century thereafter, many white Southern Democrats stopped supporting the party following the civil rights plank of the Democratic campaign in 1948 (triggering the Dixiecrats), the African-American Civil Rights Movement, the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965, and desegregation. The strategy was first adopted under future Republican President Richard Nixon and Republican Se...
