He was the first outside investor in Facebook, the popular social-networking site, with a 10.2% stake acquired in 2004 for $500,000, and sits on the company's board of directors.
Thiel serves as president of Clarium Capital, a global macro hedge fund with $700 million in assets under management; a managing partner in Founders Fund, a venture capital fund with $2 billion in assets under management; co-founder and investment committee chair of Mithril Capital Management; and co-founder and chairman of Valar Ventures.

Steven Lynn "Steve" Beshear (born September 21, 1944) is an American attorney and Democratic Party politician who was the 61st Governor of Kentucky from 2007 to 2015. He served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1974 to 1979, was the state's Attorney General from 1980 to 1983, and was the 49th Lieutenant Governor from 1983 to 1987.
After graduating from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1968, Beshear briefly practiced law in New York before returning to Kentucky and being elected to the state legislature, where he gained a reputation as a consumer advocate. He parlayed that reputation into a term as attorney general, serving under Governor John Y. Brown, Jr. As attorney general, Beshear issued an opinion that copies of the Ten Commandments would have to be removed from the walls of the state's classrooms in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Stone v. Graham. He also clashed with first lady Phyllis George Brown when he opposed the practice of charging an admission fee for visitors to view the renovated governor's mansion. In 1983, Beshear was elected lieutenant governor in the administration of Governor Martha Layne Collins. His most significant action in this capacity was the formation of the Kentucky Tomorrow Commission, a panel charged with making recommendations for the future of the state.

During an interview on NBC News’ Meet the Press this morning, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) discussed his recent criticism of President Donald Trump and his latest book, ‘Conscience of a Conservative.’ In support of his book, which takes aim at the president and his impact on the GOP and political discourse, Flake has been making the media rounds of late, speaking out against his party’s “unnerving silence” on Trump. This has led to quite a bit of criticism from many on the right. At one point in his MTP interview, Flake was asked by host Chuck Todd if he had thought about leaving the Republican Party, specifically because his book seems to be just as much of an indictment of Republican leadership as it is of Trump. “No. No. Not at all,” Flake noted. “I’m a proud Republican — life-long Republi...

Joseph C. Wilson, IV, was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1949 to Joseph Charles Wilson, III, and Phyllis (Finnell) Wilson; he grew up in California and Europe (Wilson, The Politics of Truth 32–33). He was raised in a "proud Republican family" in which "there [was] a long tradition of politics and service to the farm" and for which "[p]olitics was a staple around the table" (Wilson, The Politics of Truth 31). Donald Trump "humbly and gratefully" accepted his party's presidential nomination on Thursday night, capping off the Republican National Convention and Trump's year-long campaign to win the GOP contest. "Who would’ve believed that when we started this journey on June 16th last year, we, and I say "we," because we are a team, would have received almost 14 million votes, the most in the history of the Republican party and that the Republican party would get 60 percent more votes than it received eight years ago, who would’ve believed this, who would’ve believed this," Trump said. All told, his speech clocked in at about 75 minutes -- one of the longest in recent history -- during which he lambasted his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, took aim at the Obama administration and vowed to rest...
Political parties, neither mentioned in the Constitution nor foreseen by the Founders, arose almost immediately and have, generally speaking, served the nation well. The two-party system as we know it today dates to the 1850s. This first CCA of the 2016-2017 academic year will consider the origin and development of the party system, as well as the history, principles, and current state of the Democratic and Republican parties. Charles R. Kesler is a senior fellow of the Claremont Institute, editor of the Claremont Review of Books, and professor of government at Claremont McKenna College. Hillary Clinton’s theory of politics is unfashionable, but she doesn’t care. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO On page 239 of What Happened, Hillary Clinton reveals that she almost ran a very different campaign in 2016. Before announcing for president, she read Peter Barnes’s book With Liberty and Dividends for All, and became fascinated by the idea of using revenue from shared natural resources, like fossil fuel extraction and public airwaves, alongside revenue from taxing public harms, like carbon emissions and risky financial practices, to give every American “a modest basic income.” Her ambitions for this idea were expansive, touching on not just the country’s economic ills but its political and spiritual ones. “Besides cash in people’s pockets,” she writes, “it would be...

But Trump didn’t even give the protester a second thought. “Trump is Treason!” the man yelled as Trump walked down a hall on Capitol Hilll. “Why is Congress talking about tax cuts when they should be talking about treason?!” During the nonsense tirade, Clayton hurled a handful of Russian flags directly at the president. Harvard political scientist Theda Skocpol and coauthor Vanessa Williamson discuss the emergence and significance of the Tea Party. After a potentially demoralizing 2008 Republican defeat, the emergence of the Tea Party provided conservative activists with a new identity. Over the next two years, conservative activists took to the streets and airwaves, built hundreds of local Tea Party groups, and weighed in with votes and money to help right-wing Republicans win electoral victories in 2010. In their penetrating study, Skocpol and Williamson go beyond images of protesters in Colonial costumes to provide an complex, provocative examination of the Tea Party. What are the sources of the group’s influence? How it is like other recent attempts to create a third party in the U.S.'s de facto bi...
