Every film has an opening shot, the first scene that you see when you press play. Oftentimes, this first shot is known as an establishing shot, and it is the filmmakers introduction to the world they have filmed. Establishing shots are often of a city, countryside, or in this instance a tent in a field, that show the audience where the characters in the film are currently living. If you don't want to start out with an establishing shot, you could have your film begin with some text that says:
-Location: Ranch in the country.
-Time: Afternoon
-Weather: Sunny with sparse clouds
-Mood: Happy
-Pollen count: High
And about a zillion other things! But why would you want to do that, when you can show the audience all of this in a few quick establishing shots.
I'm sure you're thinking at this point, "Okay Matt, but I have so many other things to film on a wedding day, why should I take the time to do this for my wedding films?" Because CONTEXT IS IMPORTANT. Remember that when you are making a film, you are showing an entire world. Without establishing shots, your world has no introduction, and a story without an introduction can be incredibly confusing.
Establishing shots also provide context for all the future actions of your characters in the world. Imagine if you immediately start off your wedding film with a shot of the bride sitting in a dark room reading a note from her groom. At this point, your audience has no idea where she is or why she is there. You as the filmmaker may know that you had to shoot in the darkened room because it was raining outside and the bride didn't want anyone to see her, but unless you show an establishing shot of the rain falling on the house, there is a disconnect between what you know and the audience knows. And when your audience is disconnected, they are drawn out of your story, and they decide to watch something else.
To help the story be told as clearly as possible, I try to film establishing shots of all the locations on a wedding day. It doesn't take too long to do, and the results are definitely worth it.

Establishing shot
An establishing shot in filmmaking and television production sets up, or establishes the context for a scene by showing the relationship between its important figures and objects. It is generally a long- or extreme-long shot at the beginning of a scene indicating where, and sometimes when, the remainder of the scene takes place.
Establishing shots were more common during the classical era of filmmaking than they are now. Today's filmmakers tend to skip the establishing shot in order to move the scene along more quickly. In addition, the expositional nature of the shot (as described above) may be unsuitable to scenes in mysteries, where details are intentionally obscured or left out.

Star Wars
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise, centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away".
The first film in the series, Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope), was released on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox and became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. It was followed by the similarly successful sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); these three films constitute the original Star Wars trilogy. A prequel trilogy was later released between 1999 and 2005, which received a more mixed reaction from critics and fans, compared to the original trilogy. All seven films were nominated for or won Academy Awards, and were commercial successes, with a combined box office revenue of $4.38 billion, making Star Wars the fourth highest-grossing film series. The series has spawned an extensive media franchise—the Star Wars expanded universe—including books, television series, computer and video games, and comic books, resulting in significant development of the series's fictional universe. Star Wars also holds a Guinness World Records title for the "Most successful film merchandising franchise." In 2012, the total value of the Star Wars franchise was estimated at USD $30.7 billion, including box-office receipts as well as profits from their video games and DVD sales.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Establishing Shots
A look at the Hogwarts School exterior as seen in all eight Harry Potter movies. The shots are in (for the most part) chronological order, so it's interesting to see subtle differences in design between the films as well as the emergence of more convincing visual effects through the span of the series. ESTABLISHING SHOTS: Why they are important and how to film them!

Every film has an opening shot, the first scene that you see when you press play. Oftentimes, this first shot is known as an establishing shot, and it is the f...
Every film has an opening shot, the first scene that you see when you press play. Oftentimes, this first shot is known as an establishing shot, and it is the filmmakers introduction to the world they have filmed. Establishing shots are often of a city, countryside, or in this instance a tent in a field, that show the audience where the characters in the film are currently living. If you don't want to start out with an establishing shot, you could have your film begin with some text that says:
-Location: Ranch in the country.
-Time: Afternoon
-Weather: Sunny with sparse clouds
-Mood: Happy
-Pollen count: High
And about a zillion other things! But why would you want to do that, when you can show the audience all of this in a few quick establishing shots.
I'm sure you're thinking at this point, "Okay Matt, but I have so many other things to film on a wedding day, why should I take the time to do this for my wedding films?" Because CONTEXT IS IMPORTANT. Remember that when you are making a film, you are showing an entire world. Without establishing shots, your world has no introduction, and a story without an introduction can be incredibly confusing.
Establishing shots also provide context for all the future actions of your characters in the world. Imagine if you immediately start off your wedding film with a shot of the bride sitting in a dark room reading a note from her groom. At this point, your audience has no idea where she is or why she is there. You as the filmmaker may know that you had to shoot in the darkened room because it was raining outside and the bride didn't want anyone to see her, but unless you show an establishing shot of the rain falling on the house, there is a disconnect between what you know and the audience knows. And when your audience is disconnected, they are drawn out of your story, and they decide to watch something else.
To help the story be told as clearly as possible, I try to film establishing shots of all the locations on a wedding day. It doesn't take too long to do, and the results are definitely worth it.

A tour of our universe turns into a simultaneous retrospective of modern human history via the reach of our radio waves
Movie Microcosm - Fight Club (1999)
A longshot tour through innerspace - in this case the brain of our hero.
Movie Microcosm - Day for Night (1973)
Creating and subverting our expectations; defining the world we're going to inhabit in a way we don't understand until the next shot turns it on its head
Long Scene - Flowers of Shanghai (1998)
An absolutely beautiful oil-lamp-lit 9 minute long shot that pans patiently back and forth across a table in a Chinese brothel following the complicated dynamic of an entire party.
Long Take - The Player (1992)
A meticulously choreographed crane shot that comments on itself and its industry while simultaneously setting up the entirety of the plot.
Long Take - Touch of Evil (1958)
Criss-crossing a moving bomb with our heroes time and time again, the audience has no choice but to wait anxiously for it to explode.

ESTABLISHING SHOTS: Why they are important and how to film them!

Every film has an opening shot, the first scene that you see when you press play. Oftentimes, this first shot is known as an establishing shot, and it is the f...
Every film has an opening shot, the first scene that you see when you press play. Oftentimes, this first shot is known as an establishing shot, and it is the filmmakers introduction to the world they have filmed. Establishing shots are often of a city, countryside, or in this instance a tent in a field, that show the audience where the characters in the film are currently living. If you don't want to start out with an establishing shot, you could have your film begin with some text that says:
-Location: Ranch in the country.
-Time: Afternoon
-Weather: Sunny with sparse clouds
-Mood: Happy
-Pollen count: High
And about a zillion other things! But why would you want to do that, when you can show the audience all of this in a few quick establishing shots.
I'm sure you're thinking at this point, "Okay Matt, but I have so many other things to film on a wedding day, why should I take the time to do this for my wedding films?" Because CONTEXT IS IMPORTANT. Remember that when you are making a film, you are showing an entire world. Without establishing shots, your world has no introduction, and a story without an introduction can be incredibly confusing.
Establishing shots also provide context for all the future actions of your characters in the world. Imagine if you immediately start off your wedding film with a shot of the bride sitting in a dark room reading a note from her groom. At this point, your audience has no idea where she is or why she is there. You as the filmmaker may know that you had to shoot in the darkened room because it was raining outside and the bride didn't want anyone to see her, but unless you show an establishing shot of the rain falling on the house, there is a disconnect between what you know and the audience knows. And when your audience is disconnected, they are drawn out of your story, and they decide to watch something else.
To help the story be told as clearly as possible, I try to film establishing shots of all the locations on a wedding day. It doesn't take too long to do, and the results are definitely worth it.

A longshot tour through innerspace - in this case the brain of our hero.

An absolutely beautiful oil-lamp-lit 9 minute long shot that pans patiently back and forth across a table in a Chinese brothel following the complicated dynamic of an entire party.
Long Take - The Player (1992)
A meticulously choreographed crane shot that comments on itself and its industry while simultaneously setting up the entirety of the plot.
Long Take - Touch of Evil (1958)
Criss-crossing a moving bomb with our heroes time and time again, the audience has no choice but to wait anxiously for it to explode.
