Here's a super short snippet of my mom and I leaving Dubai, and finally reaching Kabul, Afghanistan.
We were immediately welcomed with open arms by our family members who live there, and as much as I wanted to show that, I couldn't. I did however capture my mom buying salt and pepper shakers...because you know, those don't exist elsewhere.
Day 1 was kinda eh, but that's because I hate shopping. I promise things get better...let's just say, up next is wedding szn.

Earlier this year I visited Afghanistan after a long 20 years. I was blown away by the natural beauty of my homeland right before the touch down into Kabul airport.
This was a passion project and I believe and hope that it will introduce a different face of #Afghanistan across the world which is rarely known or shown in present times.

I was so excited for the opportunity to travel to Afghanistan. I traveled here alone in February of 2016 as a solo female American traveler. Though my primary objective was go skiing on their vast mountains (they apparently have some great slopes), I settled on exploring Kabul city, which immersed me in their culture and way of life. I'd go back to Afghanistan in a heartbeat. The people here are kind, just living their lives and the majority of them do like Americans. So, let's be kind to one another.

i/æfˈɡænᵻstæn/ (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000 km2 (252,000 sq mi), making it the 41st largest country in the world.
Human habitation in Afghanistan dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Era, and the country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of the Middle East and other parts of Asia. Through the ages the land has been home to various peoples and witnessed numerous military campaigns; notably by Alexander the Great, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviet Russians, and in the modern-era by Western powers. The land also served as the source from which the Kushans, Hephthalites, Samanids, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Khiljis, Mughals, Hotaks, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires.

VLOGISTAN | Traveling to Kabul, Afghanistan
Here's a super short snippet of my mom and I leaving Dubai, and finally reaching Kabul, Afghanistan. We were immediately welcomed with open arms by our family members who live there, and as much as I wanted to show that, I couldn't. I did however capture my mom buying salt and pepper shakers...because you know, those don't exist elsewhere. Day 1 was kinda eh, but that's because I hate shopping. I was so excited for the opportunity to travel to Afghanistan. I traveled here alone in February of 2016 as a solo female American traveler. Though my primary objective was go skiing on their vast mountains (they apparently have some great slopes), I settled on exploring Kabul city, which immersed me in their culture and way of life. I'd go back to Afghanistan in a heartbeat. The people here are kind, just living their lives and the majority of them do like Americans. So, let's be kind to one another.

The plan involved reversing his predecessor's phased withdrawal, bumping up the number of US troops to as many as 15,000, and giving new authority to US commanders to strike the Taliban in an effort to force the group to eventually negotiate a truce with the Afghan government.
But almost 17 years since the original US-led invasion, there are no signs that this approach is proving any more successful than those that have gone before it.
Indeed, a string of brutal attacks over the past few months, killing and injuring hundreds of innocent Afghans, have shown the stark reality of the fragile and worsening state of security in Afghanistan. It's made even worse by the increasingly bloody contribution of Daesh (or ISIS-K as it's known locally) to the fray.
General John Nicholson is the man charged with implementing Trump's strategy. He is the "Four Star" controlling Resolute Support and counter-terrorism in the region, and after his appeals to the US Senate for more troops, fresh boots on the ground began arriving in 2017.
But under his watch the general has also seen an emboldened insurgency take control of large parts of the country and launch attacks seemingly at will.
People & Power sent correspondent Sue Turton to meet the general now in overall charge of foreign forces in Afghanistan to ask whether and how this bloody and interminable conflict can ever be brought to an end.

After more than 16 years of war, Afghan civilians live each day under constant threat, as U.S. forces and the Afghan government struggle to secure the country.
Despite hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the war since 2001, U.S. goals are far from within reach. Meanwhile, the Taliban has never been stronger, controlling more land than ever before and establishing footholds in nearly every province in Afghanistan.
President Donald Trump has vowed to undo some of the terror group’s grip on the country and force it back to the negotiating table. But his new strategy, which centers on thousands of additional U.S. troops and an intensification of airstrikes, has only just begun to produce gains.
The Taliban, facing renewed pressure, have increased terror attacks on major cities, striking at the heart of Kabul recently, in a series of devastating attacks that left hundreds of civilians dead in the span of a week.
VICE’s Ben Anderson travelled to Afghanistan in October 2016 as the Taliban were on the verge of retaking Helmand Province, once a crucial territory in the U.S. war. Reconnecting with families he’d visited years earlier, he saw just how little has been done to contain the Taliban’s influence across the country’s rural landscape, and the challenges that await Afghan and U.S. forces.

“First tell us what you did in Afghanistan all those years. Then we'll decide whether or not we can shake hands,” said Gennady-Nikmamat's fellow soldiers after he had been assumed to be a traitor and disappeared for 29 years.
This is the unique story of Gennady-Nikmamat, a former Soviet soldier who was captured by the Mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. He was presumed a turncoat, which carried a criminal penalty if he ever returned to his homeland. Thus he had no choice but to stay in Afghanistan and adopt a Muslim way of life.
Gennady-Nikmamat married an Afghan woman, had four children with her and has lived a full life, but he never abandoned the dream of returning home. After finally coming back to Ukraine to see his relatives and visit his parents' graves for the first time, he still can't decide whether it was better that he survived or if he should have ended up just another unknown soldier lost in the turmoil of war.

Earlier this year I visited Afghanistan after a long 20 years. I was blown away by the natural beauty of my homeland right before the touch down into Kabul airport.
This was a passion project and I believe and hope that it will introduce a different face of #Afghanistan across the world which is rarely known or shown in present times.

I was so excited for the opportunity to travel to Afghanistan. I traveled here alone in February of 2016 as a solo female American traveler. Though my primary objective was go skiing on their vast mountains (they apparently have some great slopes), I settled on exploring Kabul city, which immersed me in their culture and way of life. I'd go back to Afghanistan in a heartbeat. The people here are kind, just living their lives and the majority of them do like Americans. So, let's be kind to one another.

Afghanistan i/æfˈɡænᵻstæn/ (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000 km2 (252,000 sq mi), making it the 41st largest country in the world.
Human habitation in Afghanistan dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Era, and the country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of the Middle East and other parts of Asia. Through the ages the land has been home to various peoples and witnessed numerous military campaigns; notably by Alexander the Great, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviet Russians, and in the modern-era by Western powers. The land also served as the source from which the Kushans, Hephthalites, Samanids, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Khiljis, Mughals, Hotaks, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires.

Last year, US President Donald Trump announced a "new" strategy for his country's forces in Afghanistan.
The plan involved reversing his predecessor's phased withdrawal, bumping up the number of US troops to as many as 15,000, and giving new authority to US commanders to strike the Taliban in an effort to force the group to eventually negotiate a truce with the Afghan government.
But almost 17 years since the original US-led invasion, there are no signs that this approach is proving any more successful than those that have gone before it.
Indeed, a string of brutal attacks over the past few months, killing and injuring hundreds of innocent Afghans, have shown the stark reality of the fragile and worsening state of security in Afghanistan. It's made even worse by the increasingly bloody contribution of Daesh (or ISIS-K as it's known locally) to the fray.
General John Nicholson is the man charged with implementing Trump's strategy. He is the "Four Star" controlling Resolute Support and counter-terrorism in the region, and after his appeals to the US Senate for more troops, fresh boots on the ground began arriving in 2017.
But under his watch the general has also seen an emboldened insurgency take control of large parts of the country and launch attacks seemingly at will.
People & Power sent correspondent Sue Turton to meet the general now in overall charge of foreign forces in Afghanistan to ask whether and how this bloody and interminable conflict can ever be brought to an end.

Despite hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the war since 2001, U.S. goals are far from within reach. Meanwhile, the Taliban has never been stronger, controlling more land than ever before and establishing footholds in nearly every province in Afghanistan.
President Donald Trump has vowed to undo some of the terror group’s grip on the country and force it back to the negotiating table. But his new strategy, which centers on thousands of additional U.S. troops and an intensification of airstrikes, has only just begun to produce gains.
The Taliban, facing renewed pressure, have increased terror attacks on major cities, striking at the heart of Kabul recently, in a series of devastating attacks that left hundreds of civilians dead in the span of a week.
VICE’s Ben Anderson travelled to Afghanistan in October 2016 as the Taliban were on the verge of retaking Helmand Province, once a crucial territory in the U.S. war. Reconnecting with families he’d visited years earlier, he saw just how little has been done to contain the Taliban’s influence across the country’s rural landscape, and the challenges that await Afghan and U.S. forces.

“First tell us what you did in Afghanistan all those years. Then we'll decide whether or not we can shake hands,” said Gennady-Nikmamat's fellow soldiers after he had been assumed to be a traitor and disappeared for 29 years.
This is the unique story of Gennady-Nikmamat, a former Soviet soldier who was captured by the Mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. He was presumed a turncoat, which carried a criminal penalty if he ever returned to his homeland. Thus he had no choice but to stay in Afghanistan and adopt a Muslim way of life.
Gennady-Nikmamat married an Afghan woman, had four children with her and has lived a full life, but he never abandoned the dream of returning home. After finally coming back to Ukraine to see his relatives and visit his parents' graves for the first time, he still can't decide whether it was better that he survived or if he should have ended up just another unknown soldier lost in the turmoil of war.
