Vinyl

In chemistry, vinyl or ethenyl is the functional group −CH=CH₂, namely the ethylene molecule (H₂C=CH₂) minus one hydrogen atom. The name is also used for any compound containing that group, namely R−CH=CH₂ where R is any other group of atoms.

An industrially important example is vinyl chloride, precursor to PVC, a plastic commonly known as vinyl.

Vinyl is one of the alkenyl functional groups. On a carbon skeleton, sp²-hybridized carbons or positions are often called vinylic. Allyls, acrylates and styrenics contain vinyl groups. (A styrenic crosslinker with two vinyl groups is called divinyl benzene.)

Etymology

The etymology of vinyl is the Latin vinum = "wine", because of its relationship with alcohol (in its original sense of ethyl alcohol). The term "vinyl" was coined by the German chemist Hermann Kolbe in 1851.

Vinyl polymers

Vinyl groups can polymerize with the aid of a radical initiator or a catalyst, forming vinyl polymers. In these polymers, the double bonds of the vinyl monomers turn into single bonds and the different monomers are joined by single bonds. Vinyl groups do not exist in vinyl polymer; the term refers to the precursor. It is sometimes important to ascertain the absence of unreacted vinyl monomer in the final product when the monomer is toxic or reduces the performance of the plastic. Now, Now, formerly known as Now, Now Every Children, is an American indie rock band formed in Blaine, Minnesota and based in Minneapolis. The band is composed of Cacie Dalager (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Bradley Hale (drums, backing vocals), and Jess Abbott (guitar, vocals).

History

Formation

The band was formed in roughly 2003. Classmates Cacie Dalager and Bradley Hale met in high school marching band when they were both sixteen years old; they eventually started writing songs together, starting with an acoustic song dedicated to a college-bound friend. The band's name, according to Dalager, there were children up and asked them what they were doing up at a given hour; it was originally being considered jokingly as a possible future EP title, but stuck as the band name when they officially started the project. Dalager and Hale were joined by Brad's sister Britty on keyboards, and school friend Justin Schweim on bass for the recording of their first EP and their first few shows in the Minneapolis area. Shortly before the band began recording their first album, Schweim left their live setup, and Christine Sako stepped in. Jess Abbott joined the band in Summer 2009 after moving from Maine to Minnesota, initially just for the summer until she left for college, however she became a permanent member shortly after.

His debut single "I Met a Girl" has reached number 39 on the Country Airplay chart. The song has received positive reviews from music critics: Taste of Country awarded "I Met a Girl" with the Taste of Country Critic's Pick, saying that the single is "a warm country love song that slows time" and adding that "strong songwriting and Morgan's smooth baritone make the song tough to resist". "I Met a Girl" was originally written by Sam Hunt.
