Arthur Rosebery (1904-1986) was an English pianist and singer. He began working as a pianist in 1921, and a few years later he formed a trio which included Billy Cotton. With his orchestra, the Kit Cat band, Rosebery worked in various London clubs and also made a number of recordings of contemporary dance music, which became very popular in the 1930s.
After the Second world war, Rosebery worked for some time in West Germany. He changed his name to Al Shine in order to sound more American. Later in his life he worked at Flanagan's Restaurant in London.
Dance Band is a 1935 British musical film directed by Marcel Varnel and starring Charles 'Buddy' Rogers, June Clyde and Steven Geray. Its plot concerns two dance bands who develop an intense rivalry with each other during a competition.
Arthur is a common masculine given name. Its etymology is disputed, but its popularity derives from its being the name of the legendary hero King Arthur.
Art and Artie are diminutive forms of the name. A common spelling variant used in many Slavic, Romance, and Germanic languages is Artur.
The origin of the name Arthur remains a matter of debate. Some suggest it is derived from the Roman nomen gentile (family name) Artōrius, of obscure and contested etymology (but possibly of Messapic or Etruscan origin). Some scholars have noted that the legendary King Arthur's name only appears as Arthur, or Arturus, in early Latin Arthurian texts, never as Artōrius (although the Classical Latin Artōrius became Arturius in some Vulgar Latin dialects). However, this may not say anything about the origin of the name Arthur, as Artōrius would regularly become Art(h)ur when borrowed into Welsh.
Another possibility is that it is derived from a Brittonic patronym *Arto-rīg-ios (the root of which, *arto-rīg- "bear-king" is to be found in the Old Irish personal name Art-ri) via a Latinized form Artōrius. Less likely is the commonly proposed derivation from Welsh arth "bear" + (g)wr "man" (earlier *Arto-uiros in Brittonic); there are phonological difficulties with this theory—notably that a Brittonic compound name *Arto-uiros should produce Old Welsh *Artgur and Middle/Modern Welsh *Arthwr and not Arthur (in Welsh poetry the name is always spelled Arthur and is exclusively rhymed with words ending in -ur—never words ending in -wr—which confirms that the second element cannot be [g]wr "man").
Little Happiness (Turkish: Uzun Yol) is a 2014 British-Turkish drama film directed by Nihat Seven. It was selected as the British entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.
The Kit-Cat Club (sometimes Kit-Kat Club) was an early 18th-century English club in London with strong political and literary associations, committed to the furtherance of Whig objectives, meeting at the Trumpet tavern in London, and at Water Oakley in the Berkshire countryside.
The first meetings were held at a tavern in Shire Lane (parallel with Bell Yard and now covered by the Royal Courts of Justice) run by an innkeeper called Christopher Catt. He gave his name to the mutton pies known as "Kit Cats" from which the name of the club is derived.
The club later moved to the Fountain Tavern on The Strand (now the site of Simpson's-in-the-Strand), and latterly into a room especially built for the purpose at Barn Elms, the home of the secretary Jacob Tonson. In summer, the club met at the Upper Flask, Hampstead Heath.
The origin of the name "Kit-Cat Club" is unclear. In 1705 Thomas Hearne wrote: "The Kit Cat Club got its name from Christopher Catling, using a branch of the theopolyism. [Note, a Pudding Pye man.]." Other sources give his surname as Catt (or some variant such as Cat or Katt:) John Timbs ("Club Life of London"), Ophelia Field ("The Kit-Kat Club"), John Macky ("A Journey Through England.")

It was contracted in various most fashionable night clubs in London of the 1920/30s, including the Kit-Cat Club and Café de Paris. He also waxed a number of records with contemporary dance music, among which the most valued are those he made for Parlophone between 1928-30. Arthur ROSEBERY (also written as: Rosebury) (1904-1986) British bandleader & pianist, remembered for the excellent dance recordings he made for the Parlophone in 1929-30. His band at the Haymarket Kit- Cat Club in 1929 included such players as Paul Fenoulhet on trombone, Doug Bastin on both trumpet and alto, Reg Pink on tenor and bass saxophones, Bob Wise on alto and clarinet and Len Lee on drums. Much of the music they played was the „dance jazz", influenced to some extent by the Elizalde band (which concluded its engagement at the Savoy Hotel in the same year). The Kit-Cat Club was one of the most exclusive clubs in London's West End after WW1. It became the favourite late-night spot for film stars, composers and writers, as well as the Prince of Wales. Arthur Rosbery's records are eagerly sought by discerning collector's. Hardly surprising as many contain vibrant arrangements. Here is the very popular "Spread a little happiness" , composed by Vivian Ellis. A less well known tune by the same composer will also be featured in this upload. Vocal chorus by Len Lees. Recorded 1st March 1929.
A previously enjoyed (and no wonder!) copy of this great hit, from the film "The Broadway Melody of 1929". 1929 There's a blue ridge in my heart, Virginia, I'm as lonesome as the lonesome pine Say, I would give my soul if I could but stroll, Where the flowers nod to you And the birds sing "How do you do" In that blue ridge round my heart, Virginia, Rings a song and all day long I pine to see the time When your sunshine fills the sky All my cares will say "Good-bye" For there's a blue ridge in my heart Virginia mine.
