The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage in Cyprus salutes this initiative and, on the occasion of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, is pleased to announce a new series of EU funded conservation projects and events through which it plans to mark the year in Cyprus.
Athina Papadopoulou and İlkay Feridun are two conservation architects from Cyprus. Working side by side, in the past twenty years the two women strongly contributed to shaping a non-political dialogue for Nicosia urban heritage first, and for the island’s broader cultural heritage some years later.
Conservation works at Agios Nicolaos/Aynikola and Agios Ioannis/Ayyani mosques bring 200 people together.
More than a thousand excavations and exhumations across the island has been undertaken, recovering and identifying half of the missing and returning their remains to their families.
More than 200 people - Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots - joined celebrations for the completion of Archangelos Michael Church conservation works.
Hundreds of .years ago,the Martinengo Bastion and Famagusta Walls represented war. Today, restored through bi-communal efforts, they represent a common desire to appreciate the rich history of Cyprus.
When communities rediscover their rich past, their encounters can help to bridge divisions, restoring a sense of common identity and through it, a sense of peace and trust.
