    This is the next thing in police reform. I wish democracy would stop burning long enough for us to have a serious discussion about it.

    I have an idea. Let’s spend a moment talking about this really important issue: Forty civil rights groups are demanding that an A.I. ethics board address the predictable threat of racial bias in its digital products that are sold to law enforcement.

    Holding hearings years from now w/the makers of these technologies will not restore the lives of African American & Latinos ruined by racial bias embedded in law enforcement products that will carry the imprimatur of "neutrality." Companies like Axon must address this now.

    Important here is to see this as an issue of A.I. ethics. The responsibility for ensuring racial equity & fairness in our society is a shared one. It does not just fall to civil rights activists & attys. Those working in the technology space must accept their share.

    Or perhaps we should spend a moment talking abt the fact that now two Trump nominees for the 5th Circuit Ct of Appeals have refused to say whether Brown v Board of Education - the decision that began the end of legal apartheid in our country - was correctly decided.

    Brown is the case that began the reordering of America away from legal apartheid & state-championed white supremacy. It is part of the established canon of Supreme Court jurisprudence. Nominees who can’t accept that should not be considered for federal appellate seats.

    And yeah, I know it sounds “wonky.” But it’s about the boring little subject of our responsibility to stop the dissemination of products that embed the same racial bias we see in policing today into technologies that will be used by police & presumptively deemed “neutral.”

    This week, LDF joined 39 other orgs in urging Axon's new artificial intelligence ethics board to “ensure that its present and future products, including AI-based products, don’t drive unfair or unethical outcomes or amplify racial inequities in policing.”
