Tom Richey explains the powers of the distinctive characteristics of the two houses of the United States Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate is the Upper House of Congress where all states are represented equally in a small legislative body with aristocratic traditions. The House of Representatives, or Lower House, is a larger body with seats apportioned based on population. In addition to its unique aristocratic traditions of "senatorial courtesy," the Senate has the distinct powers of ratifying treaties and confirming presidential appointments to the federal bench, the cabinet, and of foreign ambassadors. The House, being closest to the people and elected more often, has the sole authority to initiate revenue (taxation) bills.

The Senator (tree)
The Senator was the biggest and oldest bald cypress tree in the world, located in Big Tree Park, Longwood, Florida. At the time of its demise, it was 125 feet (38 m) tall, with a trunk diameter of 17.5 feet (5.3 m). The tree was thought to have been destroyed by a fire from a lightning strike, but it was later discovered that the fire was started by 26-year-old Sara Barnes.
History
The Seminoles and other Native American Indians who lived throughout Central Florida used this tree as a landmark. In the late 19th century, the tree attracted visitors even though much of the surrounding land was swamp; reaching the tree was done by leaping from log to log. A walkway was later constructed by the Works Progress Administration. In 1925, a hurricane destroyed the top of the tree, reducing its original height of 165 feet (50 m) to a height of 118 feet (36 m).
The Senator was named for Florida State Senator Moses Overstreet, who donated the tree and surrounding land to Seminole County for a park in 1927. In 1929, former US President Calvin Coolidge reportedly visited The Senator and dedicated the site with a commemorative bronze plaque. A photo that was published of Coolidge and his wife near the tree was reported by the Orlando Sentinel to have been doctored. The plaque and portions of an iron fence were stolen by vandals in 1945 and never recovered.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (Japanese: メタルギア ライジング リベンジェンス, Hepburn: Metaru Gia Raijingu: Ribenjensu) is an action hack and slash video game developed by PlatinumGames and produced by Kojima Productions, for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. It was re-released in January of 2016 for the NVidia Shield Android TV. It is a spin-off in the Metal Gear series, set four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, where players control Raiden, a cyborg who confronts the private military company Desperado Enforcement.
The game focuses on fighting enemies using a sword and multiple subweapons to perform combos and counterattacks. Through the use of Blade Mode, Raiden can dismember cyborgs in slow motion and steal parts stored in their bodies. The series' stealth elements are also optional to reduce combat. The game was originally announced in 2009 under the title of Metal Gear Solid: Rising, and was intended to take place between the events of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. However, the team met with difficulties in developing a game based on swordplay, so executive producer Hideo Kojima canceled it. In late 2011, a solution was found, with PlatinumGames taking over development. Under the guidance of the new team, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was revealed, with a significant change in the play mechanics and storyline. Kojima Productions retained responsibility for the game's overall plot and Raiden's design.

Metal Gear
Metal Gear (Japanese: メタルギア, Hepburn: Metaru Gia) is a series of action-adventure stealth video games, created by Hideo Kojima and developed and published by Konami. The first game, Metal Gear, was released in 1987 for the MSX2. The player takes control of a special forces operative Solid Snake who is assigned to find the titular superweapon "Metal Gear", a bipedal walking tank with the ability to launch nuclear weapons. Several sequels have been released for multiple consoles after requests from Konami to produce new Metal Gear games. The sequels expand the original game's plot adding new characters opposing and supporting Snake, while there have also been a few prequels exploring the origins of the Metal Gear and recurring characters. Various parts were inspired by Hollywood films with character's names, settings and artworks often referencing them.
Other notable traits are cinematic cut scenes, intricate storylines, offbeat and fourth wall humor, and exploration of political and philosophical themes, with references to Hollywood films to add flavor. As of March 2015, 41.2 million copies of the game franchise have been sold worldwide, with individual installments having been critically and commercially acclaimed and having received several awards. The franchise has also been adapted into other media such as comics, novels, and drama CDs. Snake also appeared as a guest character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Senate
A Senate is a deliberative assembly, often the upper house or chamber of a bicameral legislature or parliament. The name comes from the ancient Roman Senate (Latin: Senatus), so-called as an assembly of the senior (Latin: senex meaning "the elder" or "the old one") and therefore allegedly wiser and more experienced members of the society or ruling class.
Thus, the literal meaning of the word "senate" is: Assembly of Elders.
Many countries have an assembly named a senate, composed of senators who may be elected, appointed, have inherited the title, or gained membership by other methods, depending on the country. Modern senates typically serve to provide a chamber of "sober second thought" to consider legislation passed by a lower house, whose members are usually elected.
Overview
The modern word senate is derived from the [Latin] word senātus (senate), which comes from senex, “old man”. The members or legislators of a senate are called senators. The Latin word senator was adopted into English with no change in spelling. Its meaning is derived from a very ancient form of social organization, in which advisory or decision-making powers are reserved for the eldest men. For the same reason, the word senate is correctly used when referring to any powerful authority characteristically composed by the eldest members of a community, as a deliberative body of a faculty in an institution of higher learning is often called a senate. This form adaptation was used to show the power of those in body and for the decision-making process to be thorough, which could take a long period of time. The original senate was the Roman Senate, which lasted until 580 (various efforts to revive it were made in Medieval Rome). In the Eastern Roman Empire, the Byzantine Senate continued until the Fourth Crusade, circa 1202–1204.

The Office (U.S. TV series)
The Office is an American television comedy series that aired on NBC from March 24, 2005 to May 16, 2013. It is an adaptation of the BBC series of the same name. The Office was adapted for American audiences by Greg Daniels, a veteran writer for Saturday Night Live, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons. It is co-produced by Daniels' Deedle-Dee Productions, and Reveille Productions (later Shine America), in association with Universal Television. The original executive producers were Greg Daniels, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, Ricky Gervais, and Stephen Merchant, with numerous others being promoted in later seasons.
The series depicts the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. To simulate the look of an actual documentary, it is filmed in a single-camera setup, without a studio audience or a laugh track. The show debuted on NBC as a mid-season replacement and ran for nine seasons, and 201 episodes. The Office features Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, B. J. The Senate is the Upper House of Congress where all states are represented equally in a small legislative body with aristocratic traditions. The House of Representatives, or Lower House, is a larger body with seats apportioned based on population. In addition to its unique aristocratic traditions of "senatorial courtesy," the Senate has the distinct powers of ratifying treaties and confirming presidential appointments to the federal bench, the cabinet, and of foreign ambassadors. The House, being closest to the people and elected more often, has the sole authority to initiate revenue (taxation) bills.
This material can be found in Chapter 12 of the Edwards text for AP Government in case anyone cares.

how long did the trip last?
it was a total of 17 days, if i remember well. which i'm pretty sure i don't.
did you work on the boat?
no, passengers are not allowed to work.
so what did you do all day then?
i did lots of reading, watched lots of movies, kept an illustrated diary, did a series of illustrations for an art show, and lots, lots of staring at the sea.
how did you get on the boat in the first place?
i contacted the company that owns and operates the ship, they already know what is needed to organize passengers trips. they sent me some documents, i sent them some money, got the necessary visas and just showed up at the Long Beach port where they told me to.
was the food ok?
actually it was pretty good, they even made pizza one day.
did you find bad weather while at sea?
we were going to, but unfortunately the captain decided to steer away from it. next time.
what did you shoot this on?
i used a small consumer mono-chip HD camera.

Alerce National Park River
We walked through Alerce National Park in southern Chile to see the 1,000 year old Alerce tree that is on the edge of the park. This river flows through the park and the path meets it at certain points along the way. The water is amazingly clear and beautiful.

Colorado Already Planning for Capitol's Christmas Tree - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
Coloradans are celebrating Christmas in July.
The Centennial State has been chosen to provide the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree which will stand in front of the United States Capitol building. The tree will be selected from the White River National Forest - which beat 155 other U.S. national forests.
In August, an architect from the Capitol will make the final choice of the 10-12 "contender" trees picked out by the US Senator from Colorado and a White River National Forest supervisor. The exact location of the tree is kept a secret and will be cut down around Nov 1st.
From there, it will travel from Colorado via transportation donated by Mack Trucks and gas provided by the Association of Convenience Stores, making stops in Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The typical Capitol Christmas tree stands around 65 feet tall and is perfectly shaped with no missing branches or bare spots.
At the lighting ceremony in December, the Speaker of the House and a lucky Colorado child will have the privilege of turning on the lights.

Around 3,000 firefighters in California battled major wildfires after the end of a five-year drought across the state, as it was gripped by a record-breaking heatwave. A wildfire in the Sierra Nevada foothills north of Sacramento was only 2% contained by early yesterday evening and had destroyed 10 homes, scorching 2,000 acres of forest and sparking evacuations and road closures....
