Todaiji temple （東大寺） is one of the oldest temples in Nara and in Japan. Many of the original buildings have been burned down and rebuilt again many time over the centuries. The current main worship hall, known as Daibutsuden, is the largest wooden structure in the world. If you watch the video of the Daibutsuden, you will know why. Enjoy!!!

Being one of Japan and Nara’s most famous landmarks and temples, Todai-ji attracts thousands of worshipers and tourists each year. It was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan.
Todai-ji (also known as Todaiji) Daibutusden (Big Buddha Hall) not only features one of Japan's largest bronzes statues of Buddha (15m tall), but is also known today as being the world's largest wooden building, despite the fact that it is actually a 1/3 smaller reconstruction (1692-1709) than the original!
The same applies to the Nandaimon (Great South Gate), which is in fact a reconstruction (in the 12th century) of the original gate. However this time the gate was rebuilt to scale.

During my sister's stay in Kobe we also had time to go to Nara to see the ancient Tōdaiji temple and some smaller shrines in Nara. On the way we of course met a lot of cute deers walking around in the city.

Settimo episodio della mia serie dedicata al giappotour, il nostro viaggio in Giappone di capodanno! oggi andremo a vedere alcune delle principali attrattive di Kyoto, partendo dal bellissimo e famosissimo Fushimi Inari continuando per Nara con i suoi cervi e i templi di Todai-ji e Kasuga-taisha. Street food, Okonomiyaki da Chibo alla Kyoto Station e ovviamente tanto cibo unto del conbini! Giornata delirio col giusto connubio tra cultura e ignoranza (vedi Gigi D'Ag finale in treno) Purtroppo il viaggio sta per concludersi... Ma altre due serie vi aspettano :)

You can see the great statue of Buddha in the Todai-ji Daibutsuden Kondo from various angles.
There is the hole at the bottom of the pillar in the backside of the Great Buddha. Some visitors try to pass the hole. According to legend, if you can do that, you will be in sound good health. The hole of the pillar is roughly the size of nostril of Great Buddha.

History
Roots
The beginning of building a temple where the Tōdai-ji complex sits today can be dated to 728, when Emperor Shōmu established Kinshōsen-ji (金鐘山寺) as an appeasement for Prince Motoi (ja:基王), his first son with his Fujiwara clan consort Kōmyōshi. Prince Motoi died a year after his birth.
During the Tenpyō era, Japan suffered from a series of disasters and epidemics. It was after experiencing these problems that Emperor Shōmu issued an edict in 741 to promote the construction of provincial temples throughout the nation. Tōdai-ji (still Kinshōsen-ji at the time) was appointed as the Provincial temple of Yamato Province and the head of all the provincial temples. With the alleged coup d'état by Nagaya in 729, an outbreak of smallpox around 735–737, worsened by consecutive years of poor crops, then followed by a rebellion led by Fujiwara no Hirotsugu in 740, the country was in a chaotic position. Emperor Shōmu had been forced to move the capital four times, indicating the level of instability during this period.

Being one of Japan and Nara’s most famous landmarks and temples, Todai-ji attracts thousands of worshipers and tourists each year. It was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan.
Todai-ji (also known as Todaiji) Daibutusden (Big Buddha Hall) not only features one of Japan's largest bronzes statues of Buddha (15m tall), but is also known today as being the world's largest wooden building, despite the fact that it is actually a 1/3 smaller reconstruction (1692-1709) than the original!
The same applies to the Nandaimon (Great South Gate), which is in fact a reconstruction (in the 12th century) of the original gate. However this time the gate was rebuilt to scale.

Nara-koen Park is located in the center of the city of Nara, extending about 4 kilometers from east to west, and about 2 kilometers from south to north. Many deer graze along the spacious lawns and frolic on the grass. Nara is a short train ride away from Kyoto and is definitely worth at least a day trip to explore the sites and history of Japan's first permanent capitol. Nara is simply amazing. Get there!

Todaiji temple （東大寺） is one of the oldest temples in Nara and in Japan. Many of the original buildings have been burned down and rebuilt again many time over the centuries. Nara-koen Park is located in the center of the city of Nara, extending about 4 kilometers from east to west, and about 2 kilometers from south to north. Many deer graze along the spacious lawns and frolic on the grass. Inside the park area are Todai-ji Temple, Kasuga-taisha Shrine and many other historic structures that represent the glory of the city over many centuries. Small streams and ponds add charm to the scenery. The image of great temple roofs and the tips of tall pagodas peeking through the trees will be an unforgettable memory of your journey to Nara. Throughout the year the stream of visitors to Nara is never interrupted.In 728, the Emperor Shomu, who placed great importance upon Buddhism, founded Todai-ji Temple, now inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. It is a head temple, ruling the other 68 Kokubun-ji temples (branch temples) scattered throughout the country, and it is said that it was called "Himugashi-no-Odera," or "large temple in the east," because it was located to the east of the then-capital, Heijo-kyo.Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall) is 57 meters long and 50 meters wide, making it the world's largest wooden structure. The hall enshrines a huge statue of the great Buddha. Weighing approximately 300 tons and standing some 15 meters tall, it is the largest Buddha statue in the world.The precincts of the temple offer many interesting spots for tourists including: the Nan-dai-mon (the Great Southern Gate), on which you can see two images of Kongo Rikishi (King Deva) which are over 8 meters tall; the Nigatsu-do Hall, which is surrounded by a stage-like corridor overlooking the Daibutsu-den and the city of Nara; and the Sangatsu-do Hall, the oldest wooden structure standing in the Todai-ji Temple precincts, in which you can see artistic sculptures from the 8th century.
